In the book Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser writes about the fast food industry. Schlosser tells the story of J.R. Simplot, the man behind McDonald’s source for potatoes. He started his own business right out of the eighth grade, after dropping out. He started out small but eventually became one of the riches men in America. He owned then 160 acres of land to start off this business. He sold his potatoes to companies at first all natural. But he soon discovered that if you dry out the food it will keep for longer, more companies then bought from him. Then in the 1950's he found out about freezing them, and the method of frozen food. McDonald’s started buying and selling Simplot fries. The customers seemed to like it, they didn't mind the change or even realize it. As a result though from freezing the potatoes, they lost a lot of the natural flavors. Companies began cooking their food in a high percentage of animal fat to capture that flavor, but soon they switched. They traded beef fat for more chemicals. The fries flavor all depends on the chemicals, it is all fake, and there is even more saturated fat from their fries than in their burgers.
The fries people eat today are so unnatural that each fast food place has a different taste. "Their distinctive taste does not stem from the type of potatoes, that McDonald’s buys, the technology that processes them, or the restaurant equipment that fries them"(Schlosser 119). McDonald’s and other companies use fries now with distinguished taste, one that is different than its competitor. They also put chemicals in other things like their milk shakes and burgers. Almost everything there is chemically enhanced.

...Even if the public did know about all the chemicals which make up all the flavor, still, again they would eat it. Americans just love fast food. We, as Americans eat a ton of fast food. We even give more money towards fast food than education. Children’s obesity is also very high, and it is still raising. People here just eat a lot of fast food, with no exercise. Americans are just becoming unhealthy in general, and its happening very quickly.
We need to make people aware of the many side effects of eating fast food. They need to know what they are doing to their bodies. And if America still wants fast food, we need to have people exercise more, a lot of Americans out there eat a lot of fast food and then just don’t exercise. A lot don’t exercise at all. America is becoming obese.

An industry that modestly began with very few hot dog and hamburger vendors now has become a multi-international industry selling its products to paying customers. This chapter focuses solely on why fast food, fries in particular, taste so good. Schlosser informs his audience of exactly what they are eating when they order a large french fry at McDonalds. The fries may start out as fresh potatoes, but what many don’t know is how fresh potatoes factually turn into the famous french fry.
The fast food has a negative impact on the American people. The fast food industry can be compared to that of a drug dealer pushing their product down the throats of suspecting, but ever willing customers. The community is doing nothing to stop this going industry and yet encouraging them to continue to impact the health of its customers.
Obesity has become an epidemic in today’s society. Today around 50% of America is now considered to be over weight. Fast-food consumption has been a major contributor to the debate of the twenty-first century. Chapter thirteen, titled “Is Fast-Food the New Tobacco,” in the They Say I Say book, consists of authors discussing the debate of fast-food’s link to obesity. Authors debate the government’s effects on the fast-food industry, along with whether or not the fast-food industry is to blame for the rise in obesity throughout America. While some people blame the fast food industry for the rise in obesity, others believe it is a matter of personal responsibility to watch what someone eats and make sure they get the proper exercise.
Take a second to understand why fast food firms choose to sell products that are unhealthy. Their unhealthy products are in a high demand in the food market; in fact, they are simply giving us what we demand for. Most firms have started putting food labels on their menus so there is no room for excuse when making the right food choices. Nobody is forcing us to eat a whole box of Krispy crème donuts or a super-size meal at McDonalds. I believe that we are always looking for shortcuts in life and now we can anticipate there is a shortcut in what we put into our bodies. So we are consistently after things that are cheap, fast and affordable. Who better to attend to our needs than the fast food industry?
French fries are my favorite fast food item. Sometimes, I don't even need chicken tenders or a burger. I just need those darn fries. I have recently been presented the question, ¨What is the best fast food restaurant in Springfield, Missouri?¨. Well, my friend, I present Culvers. Culver's has the best french fries by far. They have the right amount of salt. They're always warm. The fries that I find anywhere else are always too salty, or not salty enough. Or they are too soggy. The fries from Culver's have the perfect balance of everything. I will always love Culver's and their fries because of their promise for good, natural, Midwestern sourced food items.

In a society where people are always “on the go,” a cheeseburger meal with a large soda is very easy to grab, and inexpensive. When Ray Kroc opened his first restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois, the famous chain was born. The company has become very successful with having sold over one billion hamburgers within just eight years of business (McSpotlight - History of McDonalds). So if this chain is so popular, why has McDonalds been criticised so much lately? Mostly because their food options are very high in calories and fat. The most caloric item on their menu is the Triple Thick Chocolate Shake - 1160 calories, 27g of fat, 168g of sugar, and 510mg of sodium. The most fattening menu item is the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese - 740 calories, 42g of fat (19g Saturated), and 1380mg of sodium! “It delivers the highest calorie, fat, and sodium content of any sandwich or burger at McDonalds.” The other three most unhealthy foods on the top five list are: Chicken Selects with 660 calories, Grilled Chicken Club with 570 calories, and the Big Mac with 540 calories (Fitzpatrick). From the packaging to the aftertaste, we made sure to include major points in the fry eating process. Starting with the location and convenience of each fast food restaurant, we wanted options easy and manageable for UTA students due to their role in the survey our group created, and the fact they were our target audience. The customer service and speed of the fast food chain was our next focal point. The process of ordering and receiving the fries plays a leading role in where most people go to get their fry of choice. Remember how happy you were when your parents bought you a happy meal as a child. It came in that cool little red box with some fries and chicken nuggets. Oh, and best of all it always came with a toy; your parents would tell you not to open it until you finished your food but that never happened. Or the time you forgot money at home but still managed to scrap up a dollar and sixteen cents from your car for an iced sweet tea. Fast food always comes in the clutch, but what is really behind the happy meals and sweet teas. We all know fast food is not good for you, but who’s to blame. Is it fair that we blame fast-food chains or are we just to afraid to blame ourselves?

McDonald’s is known to satisfy your taste buds without breaking your bank account. Since 1930 when the first drive thru fast food place was opened the workers actually cared about how they were preparing their food. Now with the demand of people wanting to get a full meal but for very cheap, McDonald’s would be the best place for that. When approaching McDonald’s, you may think you are getting a cheeseburger for a great price, but really we have no idea what we are eating. It is a known fact that you can leave a cheeseburger and an order of French fries out for years, and nothing will look old or mold, just cold. McDonald’s food is so pumped with fillers and products that we should not be eating. This study was done on several occasions that the food does not age at all. You sometimes question when you visit a fast food restaurant how they make any money and stay in business with employees. But the reality is the food you are eating is not what you think it is. If we knew what boneless meats were made of we wouldn’t eat any of them. I can’t even imagine what the chicken nuggets are really made of, and why the meat in them really is “dark”. Even the burgers look like patties, not the ground up ground beef burgers. The dollar menu is designed for a cheap dinner and smaller portions. The flavor is the biggest thing in any food, you cannot have something be flavorless and expect someone to like it. That is where they do everything right, the best flavor possible. To properly flavor something is such a hassle but to them it is easy. Mcdonalds nuggets are not real at all, it is ground up chicken that is put into molds and dipped in the deep fryer. There is hardly any flavor besides the oils they cook them in. Never expect flavor when you buy Mcdonald's because you will not get what you were hoping for.
