Obesity and diabetes are being diagnosed in individuals across the globe in record numbers. Today, many individuals, usually lower income individuals, cannot afford the health care required to treat these avoidable medical conditions. A tax on these sugary foods and drinks could be used to help offset the costs of those who are diagnosed with these conditions, and, ideally, prevent some of these people from developing them. Many countries have already begun including a ‘sin tax’ on sugary food and beverages in an effort to combat the epidemic. Our government should put a tax increase on these sugar filled beverages and foods as well to help reduce obesity, and raise a source of income to combat the medical issues.

“This Article constructively critiques the two arguments that public health advocates have made in support of anti-obesity soda taxes or junk food taxes. Part II discusses and critiques the first argument, an economic externalities argument that government should tax soda or junk food to internalize the disproportionately high health care costs of obesity. Part III discusses and critiques the second argument made by public health advocates, that government should adopt anti-obesity measures to improve population-wide health. Consider possible unintended consequences of anti-obesity proposals. Obesity policy debates present a conflict of fundamental values, such as health, fairness, efficiency, and autonomy. Part TV attempts to reconcile these values and responds to the "personal responsibility" objection to soda taxes and food taxes. Part V considers various factors that would affect behavioral responses to proposed soda taxes and food taxes and addresses concerns that such taxes would be regressive and thus unfair to low-income consumers. Part VI suggests the way forward for public health advocates, including a proposal to enact a tax on nutritionally poor foods and drinks, paired with a salient benefit. This Part also recommends enactment of a federal system of food classification, based on nutrient-profiling methods, along with a federal system of front-of-package nutritional labeling.” (Pratt)
Through comprehension of the significant relationship between SSBs and obesity, the existence of an unhealthy food environment and the indirect association of SSBs with chronic and severe diseases, it is clear that a sugar tax would aide in not only decreasing obesity rates but also improving health. Many argue that sugar taxes will not decrease obesity because there are multiple causes of obesity. However, as physicians, in our many roles, we can help to build a multi-sectoral approach to help decrease rates and I believe sugar taxes would be a good stepping stone. As a future physician, I play an important role in my patients’ health, and need to make sure that in addition to the implementation of the sugar tax, I involve a multidisciplinary team, educate my patients, and also encourage physical activity. Overall, the sugar tax and its multiple benefits should be strongly considered by the Canadian government to help decrease obesity rates and improve the health of
In the UK as well as in other developed countries, obesity is becoming a growing problem this puts pressure on health services and affects individuals’ ability to work, and contribute to the economy. The government feels the pressure to act by taxing unhealthy foods and drinks, and by setting up educational campaigns, (Stephen Adams, 2011).

Have you ever had those moments where you are feeling unmotivated or zero energy to workout? I will be the first to tell you I have had these moments. Being involved in the fitness world, I love every aspect of fitness. For the past 5 years, I was working out 5 days a week and had my ups and downs with results. I am guilty of it, I would pick up a workout magazine and try out this crazy workout and just destroy my body. Sure, I saw some results but I was becoming more and more tired throughout the day. On top of that, I was only getting 5 hours of sleep and not eating appropriately to refuel my body. I know stupid right? I am human and I am not perfect!

Taxing sugary drinks has been a controversial national topic for a while now, most people can agree that the arguments regarding this topic started when New York City's Mayor Michael Bloomberg attempted to ban all outsized sugary drinks from restaurants and other eateries. This sparked great controversy and upset many people regarding Bloomberg and how he used his "power" as New York City's mayor to impose such a ban. Although Bloomberg's ban was not as successful as he wanted it to be, many states and people agreed with what he was trying to impose and started taking matters into their own hands. Cities and states started to slowly ease in their attempt to put a ban on sugary drinks and have people apart of their region follow their attempts. Like Bloomberg, these states are all correct; putting a tax on sugary drinks is a positive initiative that the United States government should work harder to impose.

A loud plane noise buzzed in your ears as you look up to see a plane fly past you, to close to the ground. You look up to see the two gray, twin towers and tilt your head, thinking. The plane is going directly for the towers and you stand up to get a better look. The plane crashes and an eruption of smoke blasts out of the side of the building. You see people running away from the building. A person jumps out of a window, saving himself from suffocation. This is tragic but have you ever thought about the 598,000 people who die from obesity each year? The USDA is giving children a strict school lunch diet. They hope this will help decrease the risks of obesity in the long run. The USDA does need to set rules for dieting, but the ones that
Manitoba, a place knew for adoring new and high taxes, refused to add junk food taxes because they knew that it was going to be a waste of time and there would not be any positive results (5). The many studies of junk food taxes have soon other countries that it is not going to work. People will find other alternative to get the sugary high they need. A study in a small city showed that soda intake decreased for a small amount of time and then it increased again, as well as the sales on beer increased (Luciani P.
Face it, we have all heard the phrase,"You are what you eat" countless times in your life, but what does that truly mean. Every few months or years, millions go into trying new diets and diet pills but fail to understand why they cannot continue to eat healthy after their first few days on their new diet. Well, 1) the word "DIE" is in diet 2) no matter where you look you 're going to find delicious food ads and junk food and 3) you don 't have support.
Obesity is an issue that most people may be aware of, but I don't feel like many people actually know the ins and outs of it and how bad it really is. Although the speech that Jamie Oliver gave was about teaching children about food, I feel as if we need to teach adults about food just as much as children.
