There are a lot of things researchers have learned over the years in the terms of nutrition and what is considered a healthy food choice. Armed with the research, caregivers of children now know that eating a balanced meal is very important for the children that they watch. Although, Junk food is convenient and delicious, healthy food will help children focus in class, and the benefits of eating healthy greatly pay off in the future. Eating healthy can help children in many aspects of their life, but not eating right can cause problems in the future with their physical body as well as their learning mind. Junk food can be very appealing because of taste, price and convenience, but most children do not understand the health risks they are indulging in. Junk food is bad for many reasons the most significant is the risk of obesity and obesity related illnesses; a study published in Pediatrics in 2004 that “children eating junk food was linked with many dangerous risk for obesity.” According to this study, kids who ate junk food were more likely to consume a large amount of carbohydrates, fats, and sugar when eating junk food. The children were also less likely to eat as much dairy, fiber, and fruits and vegetables as children who did not eat junk food. Another, reason junk food should be avoided by young children would be that it causes chronic illness. According to the Prevention Institute, researchers fault junk food for the growing rates of high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes. Chronic illness rates are sky rocketing for children who eat junk food regularly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicts if this trend of unhealthy eating continues; “…one in three U.S. adults will have diabetes by the year 2050.” I... ... middle of paper ... ...cising can lead to a more energetic and social child, which can boost a child’s confidence and self-esteem. It is obvious to see why everyone, especially children need to eat healthy; children set the basics of there eating habits when they are still young, so it is very important to parents that they start there kid off on choosing healthy foods. If they start off on eating junk food; not only are they setting bad future habits, but they are also setting themselves up to do poorly in school. Eating healthy is not just for appetences, but also a way to better improve the ability to do well in class and to have a more positive outlook on life. If one tries to manipulate kids, or even adults, into not eating junk food, when the opportunity does arise they will most likely chose the unhealthy version. It should be up to the parents on what their kids eat, and they should most definitely make them eat healthy, and foster healthy eating habits. Whenever those kids do grow up, it should then be their responsibility to eat healthy, and hopefully they will continue on eating healthy. That does not mean that they will though, but in the end they should learn their own way, and on their own time. This is American, it is a FREE country, so we should decide when and what we want to eat. It should also be our responsibly to take care of ourselves, and our bodies, and more important, our health. We cherish it more if we have to spend our own money on medical bills and medication. People need to realize if they want to eat out more than they eat in, they should exercise more regularly. All in all, consumers should have the right to eat whatever they want, whenever they want, because they should have to pay for their own medical supplies to keep themselves alive. If they want to slowly kill themselves by eating too much McDonalds, let them. If they have to money to keep buying unhealthy food, then they should have the money for all their medical
It is apparent that living an unhealthy lifestyle, as well as eating poorly, negatively affects one’s health. From a young age it is quickly learned which foods are considered healthful as opposed to junk food. It is a parents responsibility to supervise the intake of their child's food, however there is a higher risk than ever before of childhood obesity.
Americans eat entirely too much. And the foods we are consuming are not at all healthy, they contain excessive amounts of salt, sugar, saturated fat, carbohydrates, etc. This over eating is not only a severe problem in the adult population but also in America’s children as well. Results from a study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that 1 to 2 year olds get 30 percent more of the 950 calories they require a day. It has also been found that another contributing factor to most children’s bad eating habits is the fact that they either rarely or never consume vegetables and fruit. Besides the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables children are consuming large amounts of sugar. Wether it be in candy or desserts, soda or sugary fruit juices children are beginning to consume these at very early ages. Results from another study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that infants are drinking soda out of baby bottles as early as 7 months of age. In response to these disturbing facts Parents magazine published the preceding article. It outlines 10 steps that can be taken to
However, when creating fast food restaurants, the industries were not thinking about the negative effects such as obesity. Other than obesity, other harmful effects exist as well. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy products such as greasy foods and artificial meat that lead to dietary health issues in many adults and children. A recent study showed that “Young children who are fed processed, nutrient-poor foods are likely to become unhealthy teenagers, and eventually unhealthy adults. Now twenty-three percent of teens in the U.S. are pre-diabetic or diabetic, 22% have high or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels, and 14% have hypertension or prehypertension”
In this paper, it will focus on how junk food marketing impacts childhood obesity. Childhood obesity continues to be on the rise from junk food marketing because of the schools food policies and vending machines, increased junk food available at supermarkets and advertisements in social media.
High levels of trans fat, sugar, and salt have become prominent in many processed and fast foods, causing Americans to become addicted to these unhealthy preserving additives. In many school settings, students only have access to junk food when searching for something to eat in either the cafeteria or school vending machines. Many high school students consume three hundred and thirty-six calories a day purely on school vending machine snacks. (Koebler) Possible solutions to the growing childhood obesity problem are to provide healthier options, such as fruit...
Unfortunately, in today’s society, school administrators focus heavily on standardized test scores and school rankings thus adding more pressure on students and teachers. This being said, schools have begun to focus on providing healthy foods because they help increase a person’s cognitive and critical thinking ability. It is seen that nutrition plays a great role in students’ performance on exams and physical activity due to the correlation between school provided meals and low student
To conclude, unhealthy foods in the cafeteria and the vending machines are the worst examples for the kids to maintain the healthy eating habits. Us Parents have to step in to make changes for our kids because in doing so would determine what kind of foods our kids are consuming. We do know for facts they are not getting the proper nutrients while in school, although they do spend in average of eight to 12 hours in schools. We, the parents, can start to make a difference, by attending the school meetings and being active in our kids functions in schools.
A child’s proper growth depends greatly on their nutrition and health. A healthy diet is essential to the developing child. Food should never be used to reward, punish, or bribe a child. Instead children should have three healthy meals with snacks in between. It is also important for children to have good self care behaviors (including bathing, washing hands, brushing teeth), and adequate sleep.
When talking about school, we think of children learning different subjects, history, math, science and etc. I think learning about health and healthy life choices is as important as any other subject, and that should not just be restricted to classrooms. Schools have a great opportunity to educate young people about the importance of being healthy. We all know it is no secret that junk food makes you fat, but studies have shown that over the past ten years, obesity has doubled to 8.5 percent among six year olds and trebled to an astonishing 15 percent among 15 year olds. If we do not do anything about it, then this generation of children could be the first to live shorter lives than their parents.
Nutrition education can be incorporated in all aspects of their curriculum. School age children are more responsible for selecting their own foods, since they are less likely to experience fewer food related feeding problems. School age children are often willing to eat a wider variety of foods. Many food habits, likes, and dislikes are set during this time. Family, friends, and the media influence their food choices and eating habits. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating breakfast boosts children intake of key vitamins and minerals. Children should always eat breakfast, they need a well balanced meal at the start of the day to give them energy and help them concentrate. At this age, children are able to help prepare meals, giving them the hands on experience needed to develop a healthy
Since industrialization in early America, the food industry has been growing, and with the development of prepackaged foods and fast-food chains, having snacks at your fingertips is a luxury that seems convenient and beneficial… until one considers the effects of junk food on the body and brain. Generally, junk food is characterized as food with high fat and sugar content and minimal nutritional value (Karimi-Shahanjarini et al., 2012). In modern day America, it is common to arrive home from a long day at school or work and grab a conveniently prepackaged snack to quiet your munchies and calm your nerves. Although this seems like a harmless act, eating these snack foods can have negative effects on the body and brain.
It goes without saying that, around the United States, and also around the World, there are hunger problems. One crucial area is with school age children. Nutritious foods in the right amounts are essential for everyone, but particularly for children. In early childhood, adequate nutrition can ensure healthy growth, proper organ formation and function, a strong immune system, and neurological and cognitive development. Nutrition also has increasingly been recognized as a basic pillar for social and economic development. Well-nourished children can learn new skills, think critically and contribute to society.
Junk food contains a high amount of unhealthy ingredients that affects our body in a bad way. Junk food also affects our brain negatively and obesity is also one of the effects of fast food on the humans body. In order to let young people and children stop eating fast food parents should help them with that. Eating junk food should be one day every week or also one day every month not more than that. There are many other reasons why junk food is bad but these three reasons are the most important one’s that people should be afraid of. Stop eating fast food from today and start a new healthy life. Our body needs to be clean and
When we eat healthy food, we physically and mentally feel good. Good food habits and a balance diet aren’t developed in one day, nor they can be destroyed in one unbalanced meal. When we eat healthy food, we choose to have a healthier lifestyle. We choose to stay fit and fine. But, it doesn’t mean we will lose our ability to enjoy any other foods. Eating healthy food help us to gain so many things that will affect us for the rest of our life including a longer life, the ability to enjoy natural foods, and a sense of self-esteem. Not only that, but it also helps us to do better performance in the classroom, and it also make you feel and look best. But, if we choose to ignore healthy food and start having a poor diet then our life will eventually end up being in a great health problem. It will not only stop us from getting success in academic, but it can also lead us to a serious long-term illness, such as
