I met with Christine, an acquaintance I know through members of a twelve step program. We met for about 20 minutes over coffee. Christine works at an inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in New Jersey, the specifics of which have been intentionally omitted. The goal of my learning plan for this semester is to develop skills in health education specific to adolescents. I chose this as my learning goal because my placement this semester at Sunnybrook Hospital, Injury Prevention Program, gives me an opportunity to provide health education to high school students every Tuesday at out P.A.R.T.Y. Program so I thought I should use this opportunity to develop my and improve my nursing skills in this area. As well as good health education skills to adolescents can benefit the students by proving them a motivating learning environment and better learning outcomes. I hope they can enjoy my teaching and absorb the information and use them in the future. I have considered many factors in the process of developing my learning plan such as the nursing standards of health promotion, prevention and health protection, professional relationships, capacity building etc… I brainstormed possible topics such as possible topics that are related to injury prevention itself for example, concussion prevention or preventing sports related injuries. I also thought about doing topics that are relevant specifically to the P.A.R.T.Y. Program such as teenage suicide and prevention or distracted driving. The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
The main goal for this self-reflection essay was to analyze the impact that these past six months had in my personal and professional life. I started by looking at the original goals I formulated when I started the semester in January and then I proceeded to weight how the experiences and the new acquired knowledge helped me reach those objectives.
Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I aspire to achieve these attributes for individuals in everyday life and this course will help me to do so. I find helping people rewarding and adult nursing provides a professional platform to achieve this target. I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries. In this reflective essay, I will be using the Driscoll’s model of reflection to talk about how my knowledge of quality nursing care has improved since the commencement of this module. Quality nursing care has helped me develop various nursing strategies that will guide me in my first placement and throughout my career in nursing. Ryan is the presented client in this case at twenty-five years old. He identifies himself as a heroin addict and first started using substances at the age of twelve years old. This was around the time that Ryan reports his parents got divorced. His substance use first began with occasional alcohol and marijuana use that became daily use by the age of fifteen. Ryan shares that he then began to experiment with a variety of drugs including opiates which became his drug of choice. His use of opiates escalated from pills to intravenous heroin use that he was supporting through dealing, stealing, and pawning. The client has made attempts at sobriety previously including detox, inpatient, intensive outpatient treatment, and one-on-one therapy. His girlfriend recently entered treatment for her heroin use and Ryan is able to report numerous consequences of his drug use over the past several years including pending legal issues that have driven him to
D-The patient arrived late to his session and had thought his appointment was at 10:30am, not 7 am as he had requested. The patient apologized for forgetting about his request to see this writer at a earlier time. When asked about how he is doing at his current dose, the patient shared exciting news about his experience to the point that he does not feel sick, able to eat more, sleep, and not feeling lazy. The patient is still searching for a vehicle and came close to buy one last week, but someone else purchased the car before him on a first come, first serve basis. The interdisciplinary course is a core requirement in the after-degree nursing program as it incorporates the principles of self-directed learning and promotes critical thinking, which is an essential element in nursing practice. As a final year nursing student, I believe that knowledge from this course will enhance my ability to provide patient-centered care.
