Balancing a proper work-life balance while trying to support my fellow nurses by being as flexible as possible is a constant challenge. When short staffing occurs, it can significantly affect the quality of care that patients receive. For instance, if there is no nurse available to take over from the previous shift, the continuity of care is disrupted, potentially leading to errors and omissions in patient care. Moreover, the increased workload can lead to frustration and burnout among staff, contributing to higher turnover rates within the unit or facility. This creates a vicious cycle where the remaining staff are left to handle an even greater burden, further exacerbating the problem. I have seen colleagues become overwhelmed and fatigued, which not only affects their physical and mental health, but also their ability to provide compassionate and attentive care to patients.
