I plan on attending a top private university on the east coast. In order to meet the high tuition costs I will be using my own personal savings from working the past year at Fidalgo Drive-In. Also, because of my high academic standing merit scholarships will aid in decreasing a large part of my tuition. As well as working hard at my job and school I have taken the initiative to apply for any scholarship I qualify for. My mother will not be able to contribute much to my educational expenses leaving me responsible for the majority. I am hoping that with the combination of my savings, scholarships, and federal aid I can graduate debt free.
After graduating Anacortes High School I intend on graduating from a top university, preferably on the east coast. I will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing leading to a career as a registered nurse. Recently I spent a month at Seattle Children’s Hospital recovering from emergency surgery. Now, I am leaning towards a specialty in pediatrics because of the exceptional nurses and the impact they had on me and other patients. I aspire to help a child and their family the same way the nurses helped me. Before entering directly into the nursing field I would like to take a year and devote it to community service. By joining a

When I do find some time to myself I divide it between reading and spending time with friends and family. Being a voracious reader I complete numerous novels a week. Essay 1: How will you contribute to the mission of the Nurse Corps scholarship program in providing care to underserved communities?
Scholarship, leadership, character, and service are four attributes that define an excellent student. Being in high school, it’s difficult at times to be a leader, show your character, and be involved with voluntary services while being focused on scholarship, but I have managed to do all four numerous times. I am so grateful and excited to have the chance to be a part of the National Honors Society.
When I started nursing school, I began to learn of the same disease processes I had heard sitting at the bedside of family members. It was then that I realized the role that education and appropriate management play in preventing complications and the difference those tools could have made for my family. As a first-generation child of a afghan immigrant and without a education, my family did not have access to those tools. Within our community, there was no emphasis on health promotion or education. However, I see this not as an obstacle but an opportunity for change: with the training from the Family Nurse Practitioner program, I can educate other families on how to live a longer and healthier life.
Scholarship is not the only pillar that I have achieved. I also possess Leadership, Character, and Service that make me a well rounded individual. Leadership is one of the qualities that I have strengthened over the years because I have put myself out there and gotten involved in a variety of things. I have also developed my character over the years I have been in high school. Lastly, I put myself out there because one person can help to change the world that we live in. Developing myself as a person over the past few years has helped me move forward to satisfy the other three pillars.
Scholarship is a concept that can mean many different things to many different people. As nursing students, scholarship is a concept that we began developing before we started our formal nursing education, will continue to hone during nursing school, and will utilize every day as professional nurses. Scholarship is not something that comes from a singular source, but rather something that is the product of many different experiences, ideas, and types of knowledge. For nurses, it is the synthesis of knowledge from liberal education, knowledge from a variety of disciplines, and the integration of ways of knowing and thinking in nursing that promote scholarship, which in turn leads to the promotion of safe, quality patient care.
Ever since I have been little I’ve always been intrigued by doctors. Many children at my age would be scared of doctors, but I’ve always loved them as long as I was not getting a shot, then I was a crying mess. I remember one of my appointments that I had as a kid, the doctor who I later found out was a pediatrician, was one of the nicest people I had ever met. At the time, I only knew her as a doctor but even at a very small age, she influenced me in a way which has affected my career-oriented decisions to this day. I am Nishi Natalia and as a senior in high school, I was looking forward to being in this program to figure out which career in healthcare was best for me. After spending two weeks shadowing various departments I found that I enjoyed being around small children. So when it came time to pick the department we wanted to be in for the second half of the program I picked the Pediatric Department. I’m here to tell you today about my experience in this department and how it has affected my goals for the future.

Nursing excellence is defined in various ways. I believe that nursing excellence is demonstrated when nurses are involved in promoting holistic patient centered care, quality and innovation, education, evidence-based practice, and nursing research. Nursing organizations plays a pivotal role in promoting nursing excellence. For this discussion post, I will be discussing the role of two organizations; the National League of Nursing (NLN) and the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN), in promoting nursing excellence and nursing practice.
According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016).
