The purpose of this essay is to discuss and reflect on my performance demonstrating caring for a patient with an intravenous cannula.This includes priming an intravenous line and administering 100ml of normal saline following the patients documented medical orders. I will be using the Gibbs (1998) reflective cycle to exhibit my ability to link theory to practice, to explore different ideas and ways of thinking about my practice and to promote self improvement.

I verified the expiry date, consistency, colour and package name of the 10ml container of normal saline for injection and then drew it up using the aseptic non touch technique. I confirmed the 100ml normal saline bag against the fluid order, its expiry date, consistency, colour and had the nurse working with me verify these as well. I removed the giving set from its packaging and prepared it for priming. I then took everything to the patients bedside and introduced the nurse who would be assisting me. I checked the intravenous therapy against the fluid order at the patient's bedside with the assisting nurse. We both confirmed the patients details on the order against their identification band, noting the patient had no allergy precautions, we also verbally asked him to confirm his name and date of birth. I then performed hand hygiene and checked the intravenous cannula site for any signs of swelling, redness or phlebitis. The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I aspire to achieve these attributes for individuals in everyday life and this course will help me to do so. I find helping people rewarding and adult nursing provides a professional platform to achieve this target. It also helps me to progress to a stable job that is solely concentrated on making a positive difference in someone’s life. For this reason, I would feel privileged to be accepted on to this course.

I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries.
