The Washington State University College of Nursing (CON) is proposing the Washington State University Academic Practice Partnerships to Improve Care and Outcomes (APPICO) Project to promote Nurse Practitioner education and to address the healthcare needs of underserved individuals and families in Eastern Washington. The APPICO Project will establish strong academic-practice partnerships that provide family nurse practitioner (FNP) students and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner students (PMHNP) with longitudinal, immersive clinical education of CON Nurse Practitioner (NP) students, supports, engages, and evaluates preceptors as true partners in the education of our students. By creating joint appointments for Nurse Practitioner Faculties in Residence (NPFRs) in each of our partner clinics, this project will ensure that preceptors serve as clinical supervisors for NP students and as faculty at the CON. The APPICO Project will ensure ongoing communication with our clinical partners that informs the curriculum and improves clinical care provided to patients at our partner clinics. Together with our clinical practice partners, the CON will evaluate the success of APPICO using an iterative approach that includes evaluations of patient outcome data from our partner clinics, assessment data from the NPFRs, students, and other preceptors to improve the CON NP …show more content…
While the CON has placed NP students in each clinic in the past, we have not optimized our relationship in ways that result in increased placements and improved clinical preparation for NP students in providing care for underserved populations. These partnerships have not included the kind of enhanced communication and data sharing that we currently propose; nor have they provided a structure to implement Interprofessional education (IPE) in the practice setting. Central to APPICO will be the placement of CON NP faculty members in practice at the clinics, thus this innovation is a benefit to both the practice and academic partners. Ultimately, project will provide instrumental support to increase the numbers of NPs who provide care in underserved settings. I now that I have the knowledge to aspire to take up my role within one of the identified population foci. APRNs program developed my core competencies by allowing me to be more efficient adaptability with regards to newly emerging APRN roles or population focus. Furthermore, achieving my course objectives enable me to understand the specific APRN roles. For example, course objectives provide me with a better detail, and align my licensure goals with the responsibilities expected of each role. Licensure will provide me and my fellow APRN graduates with the full authority to practice. Also, certification is required to meet the highest possible standards as APRNs are expected to align knowledge, skills and experience with the standards of health care professionals. This field has very narrow margins for error, and it is therefore important, for APRNs to meet the highest and most stringent academic qualifications. In order to be a recognized as APRN graduate, one is required to complete formal education with a graduate degree or post-graduate certificate awarded by an academic institute and accredited by a recognized accrediting agency empowered by the relevant government education

What led me to nursing in the beginning was having a passion for people. I love the holistic approach and level of care that nurses bring to the literal bedside table. I knew throughout nursing school that I wanted to advance my education further than bedside nursing. I debated on whether to pursue a master’s degree in nursing and just become a nurse practitioner, but ultimately, I knew I wanted to advance my education even further to help make and promote changes in healthcare. By choosing to become a doctorally prepared nurse practitioner, I hope to change the stigma that is attached with being “just a nurse” and show that nurses play a vital role in redesigning

The health care system of today will be invaluable without the help of well-trained registered professional nurses. According to Wilkinson, Treas, Barnett, Smith (2016) registered nurses in today’s health care have the training required to develop a care plan with other health care workers that is specific for each patient in their care, instead of the same general approach for every patient. This is known as patient centered care because each patient is different from the other and the registered nurse role includes developing a good plan for every patient they care for. In performing such duties, registered nurses tend to create a strong bond with their patients by caring for their patients by all means possible. By caring for their patients, they tend to gain their patients and their families trust. According to Wilkinson et al. (2016) There are many support systems for patients in our communities that have good intentions of assisting sick people and those in need. Most of them are not known by the patient or their families. The registered nurse is the one who is in the position to inform the patient or family about such resources that may be very helpful for them if they are interested. At this point, this writer is slightly unsure of which pathway she may take, once she has completed her studies; the writer is currently contemplating education, health population, or a career as a practitioner. So, this writer had the privilege of interviewing two individuals, one practitioner, and one population health coach. I have been restlessly questioning if our team has done everything possible to produce a long-lasting outcome for our patient population. I have been making many positive impacts on individual levels but how can I expand my spheres of influences to a population level? I find this question is intellectually challenging and pursuing the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) will be the pragmatic solution. As PMHNP, I will be equipped to bring a more holistic approach to prove the best comprehensive care rather than addressing a " current primary complaint" of a more complex problem. On a personal and professional level, I fiercely believed that mental illness and addiction are family's disease. One suffers, the rest suffer and I am motivated to cultivate a better understanding of mental health and to embrace a culture of kindness and empathy for those who suffer and their loved ones.
