Practice Summary Paper In the summer semester if 2015, I begin taking courses at Old Dominion University’s RN>BSN program. I originally enrolled in the program because I was aware that obtaining a bachelor’s degree would soon become a requirement at the many local hospitals in my area. As a new nursing graduate I was oblivious to what benefits of having a bachelor’s degree could offer. I was going to school because I had to not because I wanted to. While taking courses I had hopes of accomplishing a new found knowledge of what it means to be a nurse and learn the career pathways that lay ahead of me. Throughout the RN>BSN program I fulfilled assignment requirements that required critical thinking skills. In nursing 306, there was a theory paper that was allow an in-depth analysis of a nursing theory/model. I choose the Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory to discuss how it functions as a guideline for mature individuals to maintain a sense of personal development and healthy living while providing care for themselves. I used my critical thinking skills to assess the patient’s needs and plan care accordingly. In nursing 402, I identified a problem within the unit where I am employed. Patient who had and epidural to relieve labor pains where in need of an indwelling urinary catheter. The nursing staff placing that catheter were improperly securing that device to the patient’s lower extremity. The conducted a needs assessment and created teaching project that required critical thinking skills. The outcome of this assignment addressed inconsistencies on the unit and corrected the issue through the creation of a teaching plan that involved the continuation of education as it relates to patient safety. The critical thinking objectives of this program created the foundation for the nursing care that I am currently providing
As a new nurse that was approaching my first anniversary of employment, I made the very tough decision to return to school to obtain my BSN. I began the RN-BSN program with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) in August of 2015. My life was already very busy, along with having two children, a husband, and reentering the workforce in a new field, I decided that taking one course at a time would work best for my busy schedule. My focus was to take as many classes as possible, without breaks by following the start dates with the UTA program. There were pre-requisite classes from other schools that I overlapped with the RN-BSN classes because I wanted to complete the program as quickly as possible.

I wish I had enrolled in the RN-BSN program sooner than this time. Before the RN-BSN program, I did not fully understand my role as a nurse. I had no knowledge of the functions of the Nurse Practice Act and the Board of Nursing. Nursing research was just a part of nursing curriculum. I have no prior knowledge of the evidence based practice. However, my trajectory into the RN-BSN program changed all that. I feel more confident and equipped as a professional nurse now than before. Relate personal learning style to preparation for the NCLEX-RN: Critical thinking and being able to work together with the healthcare team is a key to be a successful nurse and providing the best care to the patients. A nurse should understand the disease process to fully understand how to care and organize a plan to care for assigned patient. This concept will also help me learn and understand better and eventually apply this knowledge toward NCLEX as well. My goal is to exhibit the use of my critical thinking skills throughout assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care (ADPIE). Much of the nursing school courses specially medical- Surgery centered around evidenced based which now I can see how to relate them into capstone course and eventually helping me to pass NCLEX.
My courses and experience has empowered, and has reinforced my determination to pursue a career as a nurse. I am eager and excited about starting nursing school, and having my dream which started as a young girl to come full circle. I am convinced I am a good candidate because I have the innate drive to complete the program. I am willing to learn and use those skills and knowledge acquired to provide something meaningful to the society and humanity. I have the personal determination to face the challenges and rigors of nursing school. With hard work, perseverance, and determination I believe I have the essential character to be successful as a nursing student and an excellent quality nurse in the near future. A degree in nursing paves ways for other degrees to emerge especially for those interested in furthering their education in health care. I am committed to continue to pursed advanced degree in nursing ultimately becoming a nurse practitioner. . In the next five to ten years from now, I want to write articles and books about nursing and healthcare related. Therefore, I believe that if I improve myself further positively, I will grow from strength to strength and one day my paper will be read in one of the prestigious newsletters, journals, and textbooks. I enjoyed taking this class. I did not know what to expect at first, but this class has proven to be challenging and very informative. I have learned a lot about the pharmacological principle of different drugs, which I will use in my practice as a family nurse practitioner. Each week we were given different case study, which we had to find a differential diagnosis based on our patient’s sign and symptoms and also choose the correct pharmacological agent to treat our patient. This was a time-consuming process to come up with the correct diagnosis and treatment. I learned about different pharmacological agents to treat different diseases. I also learned about different medication dosage, side effect and the mechanism of action for different drugs. I was introduced to a different database, such as Epocrates and Micromedex to look up different drugs. The case scenarios gave me the practice that I needed to become familiar with different medications, their action, dosage, side effect, adverse effect and their mechanism of action. By taking this class I am better prepared to meet the MSN program outcome.
Reflection and analysis of critical incidents is widely regarded as a valuable learning tool for nurses. Practice requires us to explore our actions and feelings and examine evidence-based literature, thus bridging the gap between theory and practice (Bailey 1995). It also affords us the opportunity to change our way of thinking or practicing, for when we reflect on an incident we can learn valuable lessons from what did and did not work. In this way, we develop self-awareness and skills in critical thinking and problem solving (Rich & Parker 2001). Critical incidents? ?
The added courses in liberal arts taken by the BSN prepared nurse promotes learning as an aspect to life, opening doorways to advanced degrees (Jacobs, DiMattio, Bishop & Fields, 1998).
In addition to the nursing courses, the Bachelors program also provides the student with more conventional courses such as sociology, communication and language. There is a growing percentage of nurses are deciding to take the ADN route because of the time factor (2 years compared to 4 years) and the ability to work as a fully licensed RN in as shorter time frame. Along with a shortened program time, the ADN program is a better option to those dealing with varying personal demands and to the economically challenged individuals because of the reduced cost associated with the shortened program (Spencer, 2008). The ADN students can take fewer classes and still have a great education on basic nursing skills and technical skills. However, the benefit of additional classes that BSN programs offers, allows a BSN nurse a broader scope of practice which equips the BSN nurse a greater opportunity for career advancement and to eventually move away from the bedside
Nursing 231 has helped me grow academically and it has also helped me become more confident in myself. Prior to 231 I had little confident in myself due to my test grades. My grades have not improved nor have they gotten worse, but I now have a different mindset. I have realized that I am a bad test taker and that is what I need to improve. However, I am an excellent nursing student and I will soon become an excellent nurse. I have learned that I should not let a C average discourage me because that does not reflect on the type of nurse I will be.

The BSN program helps the nurses in many ways including utilizing the process to the full scale and it will encourage nurses to use their skills like educating the patient as we’ll as creating new nurses. Because of the new health care reform, the BSN program will also aid in filling the gap from the influx of patients. The baccalaureate degrees and BSN program helps prepare students for the significant part they are going to play in reinforcing the new healthcare reform. Asking questions that actively involve the patient, not interrupting the patient, and refraining from asking “streamlined” yes-or-no questions can all solicit a more complete and thorough response from the patient, as well as an improved “doctor-patient” relationship (Rush et al., 2017).
When I volunteered at N.Y.P.Q., I am expected to know each and every type of sign that may be hanging outside of a patient's rooms. If there is a drop sign then that means I must have gloves and a mask on when I enter the patient's room, or a contact sign then that means I must not go near the patient because they may contaminate me with what they have. I have to follow these rules because if I ignore them that there is a chance that I will be seen as an irresponsible volunteer who can't read and follow directions.
