As a Nurse Manager with a Master’s Degree in Nursing and over 19 years of broad experience in a variety of health care areas, I firmly believe that self-improvement through education in order to provide better service to others should be a lifelong enterprise. I also believe that by attaining a doctorate degree, I will be in an excellent position to inspire others in the pursuit of their dreams over the long term. For doctoral dissertation, the subject area of interest is on Improving the Quality of Nursing Care through Evidence Based Practice. My special interest is in health disparities among older adults, especially African-American elders who are veterans.
As the Assistant Nurse Manager in a Veterans Affairs (VA) Long Term Care Facility, the patients on my unit have complex nursing care needs, from cognitive impairments to acute pain, not to mention loneliness and depression. While the work itself is overwhelming at times, I love working with the patients. Sometimes I hear stories about their lives, their children, and their grandchildren. Caring for older persons has been very rewarding, and I know that I have truly made a difference in the lives of many elderly patients with long term disability in the Long Term Care Facility.
One of my greatest privileges is having a career path in Geriatric Nursing that started while I was working in a nursing home facility as a Charge Nurse even though I was a new graduate. Working with older persons always presents a challenge. People are living longer and dealing with more chronic disease. My goal is to become a nursing faculty member who can create, implement and evaluate program curricula and also serve as a mentor to nursing students. In addition, I would like to conduct research and disseminate this research in scholarly journals as well as present the research at conferences. I would like to contribute to interdisciplinary research in nursing and also find creative ways to address the problem of the shortage of nursing educators as projected for the future.
My research into the College of Nursing’s DNP program has revealed a curriculum with excellent breath and unsurpassed autonomy. More importantly, and aside from being one of the leading Nursing Colleges in America, I am excited about the prospect of working with Professors as I find them to be an excellent match for my research interests into health–related problems of vulnerable population and elderly populations

I am delighted in my career as a professional nurse and seeking the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) gives me the opportunity to expand my knowledge base in order to practice at a higher level, and obtain the terminal degree in my profession. My goal is to become an adult nurse practitioner, with primary focus to improve the practice of nursing. The Doctor of Nursing Practice will equip me with knowledge and skills needed to understand and appreciate research and facilitate the process of putting evidence into practice, with the overall goal of achieving improve patient safety, satisfaction and outcomes. The Doctor of Nursing Practice will enable me to assume more leadership role, in practice and in research. I should be able to participate in research and formulate nursing models guided by evidence based practice models of care. Having practiced as a professional nurse for five years, obtaining the Doctor of Nursing Practice gives me the opportunity to foster my professional growth and development.
Anatole France once stated, “To accomplish great things, you must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.” I believe that my life of nursing and will research start in Baltimore, Maryland at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. I believe a whole new world will be open to me because I decided to live the life of bettering the lives of others. Similarly, to my mentor Zwade Marshall, I want to do so much for my community by using the greatest tools, which are education and medicine. I know that a graduate degree and research is not the last step. Then again I know that the University of Maryland is the greatest place to start.
The white paper entitled, The Doctor of Nursing Practice: Current Issues and Clarifying Recommendations was written and published by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). My courses and experience has empowered, and has reinforced my determination to pursue a career as a nurse. I am eager and excited about starting nursing school, and having my dream which started as a young girl to come full circle. I am convinced I am a good candidate because I have the innate drive to complete the program. “Nurses don’t wait until October to celebrate Make a Difference Day — they make a difference every day”, explains an unknown author. My main source of inspiration to become a nurse comes from an innate desire to help people and care for them in times of need. I am also a person who thrives on being challenged and I always have new goals to achieve, so nursing suits me as few other careers offer as much diversity and learning opportunities so, attending Virginia Commonwealth University is something that has been my desire for the longest. What led me to nursing in the beginning was having a passion for people. I love the holistic approach and level of care that nurses bring to the literal bedside table. Today’s society highly values attractiveness, energy, and independence. Therefore, old age tends to be devalued in many ways based on stereotypes portrayed by the media and personal biases. Regardless, aging is a natural process that happens to everyone in society. With that said, this becomes a challenge for young nurses. What does one think of when hearing of a 87 year old patient? Does one automatically think the patient will be confused, agitated, very frail, very ill, or dependent? Many do. This is where nurses need to become more aware and change their views. Another program that the AACN has partnered with is the Johnson and Johnson Campaign for Nursing, in which minority groups can enter in the Minority Nurse Faculty Scholars program to help decrease the faculty shortage (AACN, 2015). Nurses have always been an undervalued asset to the health care industry; however, there is always a great need for them. With more uninsured Americans requiring safe, affordable medical care, the pressing issue of nursing education is not a priority (Aiken, 2011). Recently, there have been modifications taken place toward the current nursing shortage, the decrease of nursing graduates, a workforce that is becoming older, and other factors that influence nurse educator shortage (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011). Nurse educators are required to advise students, complete research, and perform committee work all while teaching (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011). They also have multiple jobs outside of practicing nursing and teaching. Nurse educators have stressful roles that hold many expectations, yet there is no independence in making their own decisions concerning things. Aiken (2011) suggests that the best way to begin combatting this shortage should include increasing the number of nurses who hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing from 50% to 80% by 2020 (p. 196). Forty-eight percent of nurse instructors are expected to be aged 55 and older and are predicted to retire by this time. (Baker, Fitzpatrick, & Griffin, 2011).
The age expectancy continues to increase in society. More people are live very far into old age; this is why the number of elderly people continues to rise. Disease patterns are changing continually. Chronic disease is often the cause of death, over those that are caused by acute illness. The population that requires care is becoming much older. High quality care is necessary for end of life. Older people have more complex problems and disabilities (Ebersole, Hess, Touhy, Jett, & Luggen, 2008). The care provided for these older adults require an established partnership between the nurse and the patient.
Once obtaining a B.S. degree I intend to further my education. The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Nursing provides supplemental nursing programs to expand the knowledge of nurses. Being bilingual, I intend to use such ability in every possible circumstance. Thus, my selection to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Nursing was also based on where I could exercise all my abilities. Such as being bilingual, congenial, and adaptable.
