This scenario is very interesting because it could happened to any nurse. We all know how nursing in present days and how time consuming plus demanding can be. The first observation that I made was ow the nurse interact with the patient. Although the patient has history of hard hearing, the nurse has to ensure that the patient speaks the same language as the nurse. For my first clinical observation, I was assigned to the trauma unit and it was not what I expected it to be. I thought the trauma unit would be fast pace and there would be nurses and doctors rushing everywhere, however, I did not see any of that. Instead, it was quite peaceful and this was probably because my clinical observation was from 10-12 p.m. When I met up with my senior nurse, she showed me a binder that contained all of her patients’ diagnoses, lab reports, treatments, and vital signs, which was a lot to take in because most of the terms she used, I had no idea what they were. I have come to fully understand that in order to treat my patients in a way that is person centred, I have to treat each person as an individual and realise that every individual has different needs and different rights and preferences to me which may go against my morals and beliefs but I always have to maintain my professional boundaries and treat each individual with respect and dignity. If I was a nurse who witnessed a similar situation to Kat’s, where another healthcare professional was disregarding my patient or any patients views or requests I would go into the patient’s room and find out what the problem was. Then I would politely ask the healthcare professional to step outside of the room and I would gently remind them of the code of ethics ((Kozier, Erb's & Berman, 2010, p.97) and the Registered Nurses standards of practise (2016), and how every individual has the right to make their own independent decisions about their healthcare needs/goals based on their own values, morals and beliefs. I would further explain that the patients are our main priority and it is our responsibility as nurses’ to ensure that the patients are safe and are receiving the proper care. I would then explain to the patient what was happening and apologise to them about the situation, and I would rearrange and try to negotiate with the patient when the procedure could be performed. Then I would notify the Nurse Unit Manager on the ward to ensure that situations like this do not occur

The primary nurse is in the room, but seems to be struggling with what to do. The charge nurse instructs the primary nurse to review the patient’s medications, and obtain the one used for agitation. The charge nurse then explains to the family member about using the medication, and suggests they take a break while other alternative methods are attempted. The charge nurse then dims some of the lighting within the room, begins to play relaxing music, and purposefully speaks in a very soft tone to the patient. The charge nurse continues to try to redirect the patient, but also understands that you must not argue the reality with dementia patients. The charge nurse proceeds with light massage to the hands, and feet of the patient, all while ensuring the patient that they are safe.
