Before I started my presentation I assessed their previous knowledge about germs and hand washing. Some students knew that they needed to wash their hands to prevent disease but they did not know when to wash their hands or how germs cause disease. Project Outcomes Reflection Did the project meet your expectations as presented in Part A Clinical Project Worksheet? yes project meet my expectation as presented in part A. The two goals listed for the project were accomplished. The students were able to explain on reason why they need to wash their hands and list at least two times when hand washing should take place. The students also learned how germs cause disease and the importance of hand washing. Every student in the class was able to demonstrate how to properly wash their hands. Did you encounter any unexpected barriers to completing the project? If so, how did you overcome these barriers? Did you have to make any last minute changes to your presentation? The biggest barrier I encountered was the excitement of the students. At the beginning of the presentation it was hard for me to control the class. I overcame this barrier by telling the students that I would only allow the well behave students to participate in the presentation, this changed their behavior immediately. I was planning on only using the glo germ kit on my hands but the students were so excited and well behave that we allowed some volunteers to use the glo germ and demonstrate the correct technique to wash their

When I was working as a bedside nurse in the Emergency Department, in one of my duties I was not satisfied with the treatment plan made by a resident doctor for XYZ patient. He entered intravenous KCL (potassium chloride) for the patient. The purpose of that medication and its dose for that patient was not clear to me. I performed mainly behind the scenes tasks such as making boxes and packing food. While I did not deal with feeding the hungry directly, I still learned and observed many lessons that were reflected in class. One thing I observed that we discussed in Reconciling All Things is people ignoring and crossing divides to help those in need. The people at the food bank did not care what the person’s socioeconomic status was, they still served and helped them. A lesson that became more solidified through this project was the fact that everyone’s job at the food bank, no matter how big or small, is important to getting to overall mission completed. Whether it was someone like me making boxes or someone serving food in the kitchen, we all played a role to end hunger. Another thing that I noticed through this project was that some problems are easier, maybe not by much but still nonetheless, to solve than we make them out to be. The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.
To improve my understanding of maintaining my capability for practice as a RN, I set a goal to learn in depth from my classes, related units, and through interacting with my friends and tutors. There were many setbacks on the way, but as I became more acquainted with the matter I began understanding better. In this reflection I’ll use Gibbs reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988) to address my experiences as a student nurse in fulfilling the maintenance and capability for practice. I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries. The health care team in my ward consists of 1 Unit Manager, 20 staff nurses and 15 care assistants.
In this reflective essay, I will be using the Driscoll’s model of reflection to talk about how my knowledge of quality nursing care has improved since the commencement of this module. Quality nursing care has helped me develop various nursing strategies that will guide me in my first placement and throughout my career in nursing. Furthermore, it has taught me about communicating effectively with patients, I have learnt about verbal communication such as paraphrasing when communicating with patients to ensure that what said is properly understood. Using good hand hygiene is a start to making sure the patient environment is safe. “Handwashing is a fundamental principle and practice in the prevention, control, and reduction of healthcare-acquired infections” (Bjerke, 2004, p. 1). Hand hygiene aids in infection control, being as most hospital acquired infections are due to improper or absence of hand hygiene. Fox, Wavra, Drake, Mulligan, Jones, Bennett, and Bader (2015) suggest that 2.5 million deaths occur from hospital-acquired infections and of those deaths, 90,000 were preventable if the workers in healthcare would have used proper hand hygiene. Piece of mind is a mutual benefit of using hand hygiene in the healthcare setting. A nurse benefits from using hand hygiene because it would reduce the risk of that nurse contaminating other patients when going from patient room to patient room. A patient benefits from using hand hygiene because it reduces the risk of that patient spreading infection from one part of the body to another. Piece of mind is the benefit for knowing that patients and nurses are protected in healthcare facilities by using hand hygiene. Patients and nurses will benefit from using hand hygiene because it is a simple way to aid in keeping the individual healthy.
