The ANA standards of professional performance help define nursing as a profession. Furthermore, it lays out the highest level of behavior that must be shown when becoming a Registered nurse. These levels of behavior consist of ethics, education, evidence-based practice quality of practice, and etc. This assignment will focus on the ethical behaviors that must be exhibited by professional nurses. Ethics provides the guide line for nurses’ behavior. Within ethics there are Ethical Principles. Ethical Principles: Autonomy and Justice. Autonomy focuses on the patient’s right to make decisions about matters that impact them. Justice is about treating people fairly. She later posted the picture to her Facebook page and added a few kind heartily comments about her patient perseverance. This scenario seems as if Emily really cares for her patient, however, she broke the Professional Performance- standard7 ethics. To Emily, putting the picture of her patient on Facebook felt innocent, but in reality it disclosed the patient’s information and violated their rights to privacy and confidentiality of information. Emily strayed from the guide of behavior that was expected of her as a professional nurse. She also dismissed some ethical principles. By posting the pictures of her patient she broke the autonomy principle. When she decided to post the pic of him, she broke the patient’s right to make decisions about matters that impact him. She never asked the patient or family members if it was okay to post and comment on the pateintence’s medical problems. She also broke the justice principle. There are ways to avoid problems when using social media. Before posting something on social media, first “Nurses must consult employer policies or an appropriate leader within the organization for guidance regarding work-related postings” (Spector 1). This helps the nurses distinguish if they are overstepping the Standards of Professional Performance - Standard 7 Ethics and the Code of Ethics for Nurses - Provision Three. Furthermore, asking a leader within nursing, allows the nurses to learn from previous nurse’s mistake when using social media. Another way to avoid social media mistakes as a registered nurse is to “Remember that standards of professionalism are the same online as in any other circumstance” (McCartney 1). To avoid mistake always remember when posting something online, it must also be acceptable in the work place. And if it is not acceptable in the work place than it should not be online at all. Another, recommendation to avoid problems, is that at no point in time is it okay to take photos or videos of patient with personal devices. When posting something about work, do not put a patient’s name or post information that may lead to the identification of a patient. For example, when a nurses post something about how stressful their day was because of a patient, the nurses should restrain herself or himself from reviling
