Nursing is consider to be an important element to the safety of patients and delivery of health care and services to our community. According to (Hellerawa, & Adambarage, 2015), nurses are the pillar for doctors within any health care system and they have a very complicated workload. The nursing shortage and turnover are an issue that continually, constantly and bedevils the nursing leaders and managers. Without sufficient numbers in nursing, patient care and safety is considerably compromised, with lapses in service delivery, overworked and overwhelmed nurses more prone to making mistakes and across board dissatisfaction. Nursing shortage leads to nurse turnover because of the ones carrying our nursing duties are finding it hard to meet the demand, and they eventually burn out. This paper critically examines the issues of the nursing shortage and turnover and how the nurse leaders and managers can tackle the situation, easing the outcomes (The Truth About Nursing, 2012).
Nurses. They are such a vital part of any hospital and in any medical offices. Their main focus is on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they can recover to perfect health. But with the constant demand, shortage staff and need for nursing, help or hurting them. During my research, I found that some people agree that overworking nurses is okay because the hospital still thrives and that an overworked is just collateral damage. Other think that overworking nurses is wrong and something should be done to change the problem. In this paper, I will discuss effects of nurses being overworked back by research.
This workload sometimes makes the nurse taking care of the patient overwhelmed and stressed because he/she feels they are the only one involved in the patients care. Nursing toady allows for collaboration with other disciplines to provide optimal care for the patient involved, other staff are added to the health care team reducing the work load on the primary nurse. The RN is not the only one providing care for the patients assigned but he/she remains the primary nurse and is able to make and change the patients plan of care according to their diagnosis. According to Bayton, (2015) Primary nursing model of care delivery is great for building a nurse patient relationship.” This article shows how the implementation of primary care nursing model promotes an ongoing communication between the patient, family and staff involved in the patients care. The patient is always informed of who their nurse would be for the day by the implementation of white boards in the patients rooms. The patent could build a rapport with the staff because they knew who their nurse was going to be for the day.
The nursing shortage most likely does not mean a great deal to people until they are in the care of a nurse. The United States is in a severe nursing shortage with no relief in sight due to many factors compounding the problem and resulting in compromised patient care and nurse burnout. Nursing shortages have been experienced in the past by the United States and have been overcome with team effort. However, the current shortage is proving to be the most complex and great strides are being made to defeat the crisis before it becomes too difficult to change. Researchers anticipate that by 2010, the United States will need almost one million more registered nurses than will be available (Cherry & Jacob, 2005, p. 30).

Since the 1990’s, the interest in nursing and the profession as a whole has decreased dramatically and is still expected to do so over the next 10-15 years according to some researchers. With this nursing shortage, many factors are affected. Organizations have to face challenges of low staffing, higher costs for resources, recruiting and reserving of registered nurses, among liability issues as well. Some of the main issues arising from this nurse shortage are the impact of quality and continuity of care, organizational costs, the effect it has on nursing staff, and etc. However, this not only affects an organization and community, but affects the nurses the same. The repercussions that are faced by both nurses and the organization are critical. Therefore, state funding should be implemented to private hospitals in order to resolve the shortage of nurses. State funds will therefore, relieve the overwhelming burdens on the staff, provide a safe and stress free environment for the patient, and allow appropriate funds needed to keep the facility and organization operational.
