An age old argument between major superhero fans is who is the one that above all the numerous others. Traditionally the hero with the most power tends to rank the number one spot. However, when you delve into the true definition of what a hero is you tend to question your loyalty to the “big name” superheroes. The number one superhero should be the one that fits the description of a hero exactly. A hero is one that goes beyond human limitations to reach a helping hand to one in need or in danger forging their own safety and convenience. What is the anatomy of a hero? The first and most important quality a hero must posses is the willingness to help. Unlike others who can walk away from someone in trouble, a hero feels an urgency that he …show more content…
Take for example this brief history of The Flash. Barry Allen, The Flash, was born to two loving parents. The beginning of his childhood was a happy one until the day his dad was arrested for the murder of Barry’s mother. On the night Barry’s mother was murdered he saw a blur of yellow attacking his mother and when he went to help her somehow he ended up a couple blocks way from his home. The next thing he knew he was sent to live with a police officer and his daughter. Barry then grows up to be a forensic scientist and gets a job at the precinct where is “adoptive” father works. On the day that Star Labs, a prominent research lab located in Central City, was to test their new reactor the city was struck by an enormous lightning storm. As Barry was in his office at the precinct the reactor erupted. This caused particles to be released into the air sending a lightning bolt right into Barry’s office. After it struck Barry he went into a coma for months and when he woke up he had these incredible powers. The effects of the lightning bolt cause Barry to possess superhuman speed and the ability to heal from injuries at an increased rate. Barry with his new found powers was ready and willing to help anyone. This brought along Central City’s very own hero called the
Over the course of time, there have been many distinct heroes with significant characteristics. A hero can be viewed and described many different ways depending on the person. They may be courageous, intelligent, kind, tough, or even troublesome. However, the more common ‘hero’ is revered to be physically brave and intellectually smart. Although one may be intellectually smart, that is not truthfully what makes them a hero. A hero is someone who sacrifices themselves for the benefit of others and is courageous and brave.
What images are associated with the words “hero”? A muscular Hercules saving the world from Hades? A knight in shining armor bravely riding into combat? Words like bravery, strength, pride, and self-sacrifice are commonly connected with a classic hero. But are those the only characteristics that make someone heroic? A dictionary definition of a hero is “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities”; however, this is a very elastic definition and there are many other types and definitions of heroes depending on circumstances. Is there one that is correct? Do all heroes share any common characteristics? According to Orin E. Klapp, a hero is “a person, real or imaginary, who evokes the appropriate attitudes and behavior” (135). Heroes can be determined by, and change due to and by societal norms, but at the same time retain certain traits or perform common actions. Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit, the legendary British thief Robin Hood, and Neville Longbottom from the Harry Potter series all demonstrate that understanding who a hero is involves understanding the situation, his or her actions, as well as the society to which the hero is presented..
John Grady Cole's venture into the Mexican western setting in “All the Pretty Horses” shows a clear representation of a stark encounter, as he approaches the forces of modernity. Based on the myths in the cowboy manifesto, Cormac McCarthy includes timeless themes of honor and cultural attitudes. " In what was now a vast and empty landscape of hills and valleys, hills where the wheat grew that would soon be cut and laid by hand, John Grady saw them and saw the muleskinners plodding in the gray light with their packsacks following like mules in a train and he felt what he would feel for the rest of his life” (Page 201). This passage shows how John Grady reflects on the changes happening around him. Traditional changes in life are being altered by modernity.
The Hero is one of the most common archetypes. Heroes are great people that do good deeds for the sake of everyone rather than personal gain. As a hero you are someone that people revere and respect. There are a few requirements for a character or a person to be considered a hero. These requirements are:
A hero is not someone who is cowardly or scared he/she is never a bully or afraid to stand up to one. A hero is not afraid to do the right thing or correct the wrong thing. A hero is not someone who is cowardly or sheepish. A hero is not a quitter or a mean, unkind person. A hero is not fearful or timid. A hero is not a lowlife evildoer. A hero never has a faint heart. A hero never dies.
A hero is someone people want their kids to look up to. A hero is a role model. In order to become a hero you must have the necessary honorable character traits. Some of these traits would be humility, respectfulness, and loyalty. Though Odysseus is liked by many, he has many flaws which prove he is not a hero.
What is a hero? That is the question that has many different answers depending on who you ask. There are some pretty popular answers to that question. One of those answers is; “A hero is someone who helps other people, or helps to make other people's lives better.” Another is; “A hero is a person who tries to make the world a better place.” or “A hero is a person who does something that is more than what is expected.” Still others are “A hero is someone that doesn't do something for his or her own problems but for the benefit of others” and “A hero is a person that doesn't want to be a hero just to be famous.” Those were just some statements about what people think a hero is, but what about the qualities a hero should have?
Although a vast amount of them portray these abilities, the quality that one must possess in order to be a hero is courage, for without courage a hero would not have the guts to face the many dangers that they will have to undertake. I feel this is the most important quality for a hero to have, otherwise all the other qualities would be useless. People need a hero that is not scared to fight the toughest villains.

When you think of a superhero one normally thinks of Spiderman, Batman, or Superman, but there were superheroes long before these characters were created. First one must understand that the basis of this name is hero. What is a hero? A hero is a person who does something special or out of the ordinary in order to help others. It could also be someone who is admired for a characteristic about them, be it physical or mental. They are individuals that normal everyday people can look up to. This being the case, a superhero is nothing more then someone who is a hero, but not just that once and for that one person, but someone who helps many people, or leads them. As time went by the number of people who were true heroes diminished and just doing something for someone was no longer big news. There had to be something more to make them stand out. The American culture needed someone or something to admire and that is where our common day superheroes come into play. It gave them a goal which could never be reached in hopes that people would never stop trying.
When I think of a hero I immediately think of someone who is strong, intelligent, handsome, and daring. Upon closer examination, many different qualities than these become apparent. Courage, honesty, bravery, selflessness, and the will to try are just a few of the overlooked qualities of a hero. The definition of heroism changes with the context and time. Heroes of the past are not necessarily heroes of present time and vise versa.
Over the past hundred years, there have been many superheroes that have risen out of the ashes of conflict, however, only few heroes have come close to an equal intelligence as Batman. Batman is not only highly intelligent, he is also very physically superior to any regular man, and most of his peers, making him the most well balanced out of all the superheroes. All through his life, Bruce Wayne has been a strong student who always rose above and beyond expectations. There are few reasons that give Batman the ability to continue on as a superhero; even so, they prove to be a successful driving force. Batman’s enemies give him very powerful determination.
Heroism is defined as an act of courage and an act of selflessness. They reflect the highest levels of morality in society. Heroes have embodied the morality codes of civilizations throughout the ages. When heroes display courage, observers often identify with that courage. The refusal to take the easy way out and the ability to act in spite of fear, is what makes a person a hero. This is the way everyone wishes to react in the midst of a crisis. As witnessed in literature and real life, mankind needs heroes to provide an inspirational role model, an escape from the mundane, and a guide for morality.
Short Paper IV Superheroes are the modern mythology of society today that portray the role as a bounteous member in society that is dedicated to serving their people.
