My name is Betsy Eapen. I enjoyed educating and guiding patients about the importance of oral health when I was working as a Dental Assistant, and that has encouraged me to pursue Dental Hygiene as my major area of study. I always love to work in a health profession field. I enjoyed working with the people and also like the harmony in dental office. I also helped office jobs like scheduling the appointment, receiving patients in the office and keeping patient records. I believe that I am genuine and compassionate to others and those are some of my unique characteristics . I hope to learn how to talk, act and interact with different kinds of people and communities in society through this class, and hope to use these experiences to pursue …show more content…
my goal to become a dental hygienist. I was fairly consistently right on what I thought I knew about the common sense practice quiz. One of the answer surprised me was that more students were shot to death at US schools in the early 1990's than now according to ( National School Safety Center,2013,Pg 22).
I believed school shootings are increased because teens have more access to guns at home, and media's portraying about gun violence. Between 2013-15 every town identified 160 school shootings across 38 states. Nearly 53 percent of the identified shootings took place at K-12 schools, and 47 percent took place on college or university campuses( Analysis of school shooting, 2015). Analysis of school-associated violent deaths between 1992-99 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which found that 56 percent of students involved directly in a school-associated homicide or suicide used a firearm, and of those guns for which the source could be determined, 79 percent were obtained from the shooter’s home or that of a friend or relative. According to report issued by the University of Southern California School of Medicine, approximately 35% of U.S. homes with children under age 18 have at least one firearm, meaning that roughly 11 million children live in homes with firearms. The rule of carrying concealed weapons on campus would create increase risk for others. Most of the guns are obtained illegally. The gun used in last year's deadly shooting at a Washington state high school had been illegally purchased by the
freshman shooter's father, according to federal charges filed against that man. ). Most school shootings can't stop by law enforcement despite of their timely responds. We define an “active shooter incident” as an occurrence where one or more individuals participate in an ongoing, random, or systematic shooting spree with the objective of multiple or mass murders (Mitchell, 2013The second answer surprised me was recently, the divorce rate of couples who lived before marriage was higher than those who did not. I believe longer the couple waited for the first serious commitment the better is their marital status. Now the divorce rate seems to be about same(Manning and Cohen,2011,Pg 22). The third one was today's parents actually spend more time with their children(Bianchi ,2010,pg 307). I thought parents are spending less time with their children because of their long working hours , stress and deadline from work. Manning, Wendy D & Jessica A. Cohen( 2010-2011). o Please describe a time when you performed a thorough head, neck and oral exam and the findings had a significant impact on how you proceeded with the dental hygiene process of care. Annette was performing her usual head, neck, and oral exam on a patient and found an enlarged thyroid. She recommended to the patient that she go see her primary care physician to get a better diagnosis. The patient went to her primary care physician and was told there was probably nothing. Later, the patient returned to the dental office and saw Annette and told her what the physician said.
Well they are not hard to find in Wheelers essay he uses several facts to show that schools have been shooters primary targets. Whether the shooter is affiliated with them or not. All shooters want is somewhere they can find essay targets, unarmed student, young children, weaponless teachers. Several school shootings are given in Wheeler’s essay. Wheeler mentions that in April of 2007, thirty – two people were murdered at Virginia Tech. This was not the only shooting wheeler mentions that took place in a school. Buford Furrow’s murderous invasion in August of 1999, took place are the Los Angeles Jewish day-care. Wheeler introduces cases where guns became the hero in what could have ended like many other school shootings do. In 2002, a homicidal Virginia student was stopped for shooting more of his classmates when another student held him at gunpoint. At the Pearl High School, Luke Woodham was stopped, when the schools vice principal, Joel Myrick got his colt .45 out of his truck and pointed it at the young killer. Wheeler states that we had the opportunity to protect our schools when House Bill 1572 was introduced into the legislature. The bill would allow all concealed-carry provisions to be extended onto college campuses. Unfortunately, the bill was denied wheeler says, by a bunch of naysayers, this included the Virginia Tech itself. This just shows that we as citizens had the chance to protect not only ourselves, but our children and we just denied it.
Dental Hygienist: Have you been flossing? If not, the Dental Hygienist will know. A Dental Hygienist examines and makes sure that you have been flossing, brushing, and much more on your teeth. You really should make sure that you schedule cleanings every couple months or so. Your teeth are a big part of your health, and if you don’t take care of them, you will eventually end up with fake teeth, or the proper name would be Dentures.
The history of school shootings has shown an increase in mass school shooting. The very first known school shooting in the United States occurred on July 26, 1764 in present-day Greencastle, Pennsylvania. As part of the Pontiac's Rebellion, four Lenape Native Americans entered the school house and started shooting, killing the schoolmaster Enoch Brown and about nine students. Only two students survived the massacre (“History”). Since the 1700s the United States society has changed in many ways. Schools have become more than just one room school houses and each grade has its own teacher. Furthermore, the problem of school shootings has not decreased but rather increased over the years. On the one hand, reports from the Centers for Disease Control showed that in general school violence decreased from 1992 to 200...
I plan on applying to the dental program in 2019. I really appreciate the degree plan being that it does not require a great deal of math. My intention is to move to Arizona or Colorado and practice Dental hygiene in rural and disadvantaged communities due to them having a higher rate of periodontal diseases as a result of the lack of dentist and hygienists.
School shootings seemed like a new phenomenon, but they occurred for the majority of American history. The first school shooting occurred On July 26, 1764, when a Lenape Indian shot and killed nine children and the school master of the Greencastle, Pennsylvania school (Galvin): as noted in Appendix A. Since 1764, the number of school shootings rose exponentially. In the 1990’s, eighty-six school shootings occurred and between 2000 and 2014, 110 shootings transpired since 2000 (Killam,2008). The development of semiautomatic weapons lead to an increase in deaths. A study conducted in 1990 found through the years of 1986 to 1990; 71 people died, 201 wounded, and 242 people held hostage by school shooters(Galvin). While the area a school serves as one factor in the number of violent acts committed per year, school shootings have not been connected to this. The schools in Chicago dealt with more violent acts, but Sandy Hook Elementary, a small city school had relatively few violent acts committed by students.
School shootings have the ability to be stopped. They are largely one of the worst repeated tragedies our great nation has endured, and they should be stopped today! No terrorist wants to go out in his/her infamous blaze of “glory” by failing in their attempt. Arming educators has the capability to end school shootings in this decade. “And I haven’t even touched upon the pure deterrent effect of a potential mass murderer having to worry one of his targets might be armed” (Concealed Weapons). This quote presents the very real possibility that just if teachers are armed, future shooters will reconsider and possibly not attempt it at all. Providing this overwhelming deterrent in the foremost thoughts of a would be murderer emphasizes the positive effect concealed weapons operated by teachers could
Since 1980 till now, there have been many school shootings. Many innocent lives have been taken. Schools have become less safe. People blame either bad parenting or video games. Bullying is another factor as to why students end up shooting at schools and then ending their own life. It is so tragic and must be stopped.
Young adults are not just creating this school violence, kids as young as twelve are committing acts as dangerous at their own school shootings. In Sparks Middle School in Nevada, twelve-year-old Jose Reyes had taken his parents hand gun with him to school. He had shot 2 children and killed a teacher that was also a war veteran. He then turned the gun on himself ("US School Violence Fast Facts." CNN). Many other incidents had occurred as early as 1927 to present day. Many of these shootings include the principal and certain classmates as the target. Simple disagreements between classmates can trigger a response that creates the such violence.
Over the past few years there have been many incidents when children bring guns to school and shoot their fellow classmate(s) and/or teacher(s). The most recent and probably most tragic happened in 1998 at Colombine High School in Colorado when a group of students entered the school and murdered several students and a teacher. The first thing that everyone wondered once they finally heard the news is how the children got the guns? Supporters of gun control believe that if there were harsher gun laws, a lot of the school shootings would have never taken plac...
School shootings have altered American history greatly over the past two decades. From 1997 to 2007, there have been more than 40 school shootings, resulting in over 70 deaths and many more injuries. School shoot-outs have been increasing in number dramatically in the past 20 years. There are no boundaries as to how old the child would be, or how many people they may kill or injure. At Mount Morris Township, Michigan, on February 29th, 2000, there was a 6 year old boy who shot and killed another 6 year old girl at the Buell Elementary School with a .32 caliber pistol. And although many shootings have occurred at High Schools or Middle Schools, having more guns on those campuses would not be a good environment for children to grow up in. However, on a college campus, the pupils attending are not children anymore; the age range is from 17 to mid 20’s. Therefore they understand the consequences associated to the use of weapons and have gained more maturity. In April 16th, 2007, at Blacksburg, Virginia, there was a shooting rampage enacted by Sung-Hui Cho (23 years, from Centreville, VA) who fired over 170 rounds, killing 32 victims, before taking his own life at the Virginia Tech campus. Colleges and Universities would be a much safer place, for student and teacher, if guns were permitted on campus for self-defense purposes.
Allowing teachers to carry guns could help lower school shootings. “While some believe tighter gun controls are the answer, others believe the best solution comes in giving more people — like teachers and administrators — more training and more access to firearms that can save lives as well as take them away” (Evensen guns and teachers). “Our organization

Did you know that there has been an average of 1 school shooting every week this year? We are barely 11 weeks into 2018 and the tragedy of school shootings have been sweeping the country from California to Virginia. There are teachers in multiple states that are authorized to conceal weapons on their campus. Some students feel safe knowing that their teachers hold a gun, however some may think their lives are in danger.
I decided to pursue my MPH degree to be followed with the Residency in Dental Public Health. Now, more than ever there is a need for public control and prevention of disease with healthcare costs spiraling out of control.
