Whenever learning about this project for SMED 310, I wanted to pick out a learner who I knew had a low self-concept and low self-efficacy in their mathematics ability. After thinking back over the years, I remembered a friend I had in high school who had struggled with their math courses. It was November 12 when spacecraft Rosetta caught up with the comet called Churyumov-Gerasimenko better know as 67P (Lauren, 2014). The journey took 6.4 billion miles to complete (Lauren, 2014). Also Rosetta sent a lander called Philae to explore the comet and take picture among other things (Lauren, 2014). Interestingly enough when the media reported the comet landing I thing is trumped Kim kardashian attempt at breaking the internet with her nude photos which the media was cover at about the same time as the comet landing. You should care about this comet because comets came from and can tell us about our solar system, also there has not been any unique and important mission as this one, further more it might be the last space mission we get to experience for a while. In the second assignment, I wrote a personal story, it was about my experience in my previous job, back home. I focused more on an interesting story that I witnessed it while I was working there, I believe I turned into an enjoyable story. Lucky was a very interesting film, one of my favorites so far, this semester. Sitting in the audience and hearing all the laughs and how full the theater was proved it. Lucky reminded me so much of my grandpa in an oddly manner, it was as if I was hearing my grandpa but the oddness was that my grandpa doesn’t speak English. Module 1 assignment was to write our current vision of the future of education and learning covering each of the STEEP areas. STEEP includes Social, Technological, Environmental, Economic and Political. In the assignment, technology was said to be an area that a lot of educators are turning to. However, the question has always come up, is this a good idea? At times, it feels like a disadvantage to students who cannot afford the technology. Also, technology can handicap students, but since there is no way to turn from it now, why not try to do it correctly?
After reviewing the sources that I have gathered in my previous weeks’ assignments, I have noticed an underlying factor between them all. Some of the sources take this factor a completely different direction than what I was originally looking for, but they all have similar sections or quotes that attribute to my own personal questions and possible research topic.

As a secondary subject, society often views mathematics a critical subject for students to learn in order to be successful. Often times, mathematics serves as a gatekeeper for higher learning and certain specific careers. Since the times of Plato, “mathematics was virtually the first thing everyone has to learn…common to all arts, science, and forms of thought” (Stinson, 2004). Plato argued that all students should learn arithmetic; the advanced mathematics was reserved for those that would serve as the “philosopher guardians” of the city (Stinson, 2004). By the 1900s in the United States, mathematics found itself as a cornerstone of curriculum for students. National reports throughout the 20th Century solidified the importance of mathematics in the success of our nation and its students (Stinson, 2004). As a mathematics teacher, my role to educate all students in mathematics is an important one. My personal philosophy of mathematics education – including the optimal learning environment and best practices teaching strategies – motivates my teaching strategies in my personal classroom.

I am not going to use any kind of math in my profession!” What these arriving freshmen do not understand is that math is a skill that is used every day in all professions in some form or another. Understanding and being able to function mathematically is a fundamental building block of a well-rounded education. However, disabilities related to math and numbers can hinder students who are affected. Courses such as algebra provide an opportunity for students to build confidence in their abilities and may lead to jobs with greater financial benefit. For these reasons, it is important to overcome or workaround difficulties and develop a strong knowledge of mathematics for success in school and in life.
