When it comes to the discussion of the best romantic comedy movies of all time, Notting Hill is never at the bottom of the list of some of the famed Hollywood hits. It is a classic romantic movie yet with a rare tempting storyline directed by Roger Michell and the legendary screenwriter Richard Curtis. Notting Hill was a follow up to his 1994 masterstroke Four Weddings and a Funeral. The 1999 hit was played by Julia Robert as Anna Scott, an American top movie star and Hugh Grant (who also previously starred in Richard Curtis’s hit Four Weddings and a Funeral) as William Thacker, a shy and goofy owner of a small travel bookstore. Its unique storyline appeal to the majority of young adults on account of the mass media generation whereby many fantasize to be in a romantic affair with famous movie stars and celebrities. In addition to that, the romcom still proceed its comic quality with hilarious script lines and slapsticks, particularly the performance of supporting character Spike (Rhys Ifans), William’s kooky roommate. Most of his scenes were shots of him only wearing underwear and making sexual jokes, creating laughter and comic relief to the audience. Hugh Grant’s character, Will also possesses a silly take on the film with his awkward and overly British-ness charm that add cloying and cuteness to his romance. It is so realistic that we all forgot that Hugh Grant play almost the same character throughout his entire career. If you needed a couple of hours of some sweet romance that will make your heart woes and laugh your stress off then you must see this movie. You will be immersed in a 2 hour wind-whirled romance and escapism that makes you think everything is possible.
