The Norman Estate vs. Honda America Mfg Company Facts The night of December 2nd 1992 Karen Norman and her passenger were drinking heavily. Bored, they decided to go visit “The Face” something of an urban legend in Galveston. The Face is what appears to be a man’s face emblazoned on the exterior wall on the second floor of Ewing Hall at the University of Texas. The Face was notorious in Galveston; the legend was if you stared into the eyes of “the Face” you could die. In a dance with death; Karen Norman and her passenger Josel Woods pulled up the Galveston Bay and drove up to a point where they could view “the Face”. After sitting there for an hour underwhelmed by the killing power of “the Face” they decided to go home. Karen Norman and her passenger stepped into Norman’s 1991 Honda Civic. As Karen Norman sat down the two point passive restraint system, a mechanically operated seatbelt which automatically draws taut over the shoulder, engaged. Karen buckled her lap belt manually and put her car into reverse, her passenger Josel Woods wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. Unbeknownst to her Norman was reversing down a boat ramp and into the Galveston Bay. When the car hit the water the automatic seatbelt pulled tightly over Karen’s shoulder in reaction to the cars’ speedy deceleration. As the car was slowly sinking into the water Josel Woods looked over to Norman who seemed fine. Woods manually rolled the passenger window down and climbed out. She even turned back to grab her purse out of the car. Woods then swam toward the boat ramp, however, as she was swimming towards the boat ramp she heard Karen Norman scream out, “Help me. I can’t get my seatbelt undone.” Woods noted that Norman yelled out about being stuck again as Woods reached the bo... ... middle of paper ... ...lping to ease consumers’ minds about Honda’s day to day operations. Honda’s management team knew it had a strong appeal and allowed for the court case to answer the question the media and public wanted to know; who was responsible for Karen Normans death? After the reversal and take-nothing judgment Honda proved that it did indeed provide a quality product and Karen Norman’s death wasn’t attributed to anything Honda designed. Honda without saying or publicizing anything allowed the court decision to turn public opinion around. Honda let the public form its’ own opinions on the court decision; ultimately the public decided that the Honda case was a frivolous lawsuit brought by a grieving family and had no legal standing. The Honda management team made some missteps along the way but in the end came through to legally defend its products and assemble public support.

That night, many witnesses reported having seen a man changing the tire of his van and waving any possible help away angrily while others reported seeing a woman wandering around the side of the dangerous highway. More witnesses reported that Kenneth and his wife were having many violent disputes at their home that usually resulted in Kenneth pursuing an angry Yvonne around the block. The most compelling evidence against Mathison, however, is purely scientific. Detective Paul Ferreira first noticed that the extensive blood stains inside the Mathison van. After hearing Mathison’s original account, he summoned the assistance of famed forensic expert Dr. Henry Lee to analyze what he thought was inconsistent evidence. Blood stains on the paneling and the spare tire in the cargo area reveal low-velocity blood stains meaning that the blood probably dripped from Yvonne’s head onto the floor. The stains found on the roof and steering wheel were contact transfer patterns probably caused by Mathison’s bloody hands. Blood stains on the driver’s side of the van were contact-dripping patterns which indicate that Mathison touched the inside of the van multiple times before and after moving his wife’s body. The final groups of blood stains on the instrument panel of the van were medium-velocity stains which show investigators that Mathison probably struck his wife at least once in the front seat causing the blood to fly from her open head wound. The enormous amounts of blood inside the van lead prosecutor Kurt Spohn to investigate the Mathison case as a murder instead of a misdemeanor traffic violation.

The facts of the case are now more readily available thanks to the internet. When the story first broke in 1992 the internet was still in its infancy. Most of the media coverage at the time came from print and television coverage and most of that was not comprehensive at all. The initial jury award of almost 3 million dollars was sensational, grabbing headlines all over the world. Now with the advent of the internet in its modern form the facts are coming out about what actually happened. It turns out that Mrs. Liebeck was actually injured far more seriously than most realize and received far less money than was actua...
In 2008, a weird action of justice took place in Kentucky. A 70-year-old man named Mel Ignato fell face first into his glass coffee table, and bled to death after being stuck so deeply by the glass. Don’t feel bad for him yet; a glass table was also what he bound his ex-girlfriend to 20 years before. That is, right before he tortured and raped the poor woman to death.
On the morning of July 4, 1954, Marilyn Sheppard was violently beaten in her home in Bay Village, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie. She was four months pregnant and had been felled by 35 vicious blows (Quade). Right away Sam Sheppard was accused of being the victim to do this. Sheppard had told investigators that he had been asleep downstairs and was awakened by his wife’s screams. Sheppard said when he went upstairs and entered the room he was knocked unconscious by the intruder. He denied any involvement and described his battle with the killer he described as “bushy-haired” (Linder). After a police investigation, Dr. Sam Sheppard was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. With the hectic media covering it, they were quick in decision that it was him that committed the murder. This was an unfair trial, ruined a man’s life, and gave him no time for a career.
It’s May 5, 2012. It’s a Saturday night after a stressful week of school. It’s an ordinary spring day. We had been at Truman Lake on the water all day, looking forward to a great night of racing. The sun rose up, the heat was reaching the upper nineties, and conditions were beautiful for a night filled with racing. My uncle had box tickets to the Impact Night at Wheatland Speedway. My mom, dad, brother, and three of our family friends all piled into our seven passenger SUV to head down to Wheatland, MO. Little did we know what was in store. The races started off intense and every race had at least one wreck. After a long day, we were driving home. Exhausted, I had just dozed off on my mom’s shoulder when out of nowhere on Highway 83, we swerved off the road to avoid getting hit head-on by a drunk driver. Sliding every which way through the ditch, we hit a school bus sign; only feet away from guard rail. Thanks to my dad’s retired dirt track racing skills and someone watching over us, everyone in that car is alive today.

“August 2000, our family of six was on the way to a wedding. It was a rainy day, and Gregg was not familiar with the area. The car hit standing water in the high-way, and started hydro-planing. Greg lost control of the car. Then, the car went backwards down into a ditch and started sliding on its wheels sideways. After sliding for 100 feet or so, the car flipped, at least once. After flipping, the car came to rest on its wheels, and the passenger window broke out.

The reckless driver hit us straight on, then “Bang!” a loud noise resonated through the air, and abruptly my body flew out and hit the pavement of the road. Everything around me was simply a white haze for a few seconds after the impact. My body felt extremely heavy and the sharp pain throbbed throughout my face and body. Lying there on the rough asphalt, I faintly heard my mom and Carrie call out to me, “Sydney! Sydney! Are you okay? Answer me! Sydney!” I wanted I speak up and answer them, nonetheless, it was useless, my voice just wouldn’t make a sound. The desperation in Carrie’s and my mom’s voices reverberated to me across from where I was lying. My mom frantically ran up to my side and hugged me tightly in her arms. Blood was squirting out of her pinky, where the top of her finger had been severed. The places where my mom’s tears fell, stung my wounds, nevertheless, it was nothing compared to each little movements that caused the pains to electrify through my body severely. Every second was hell, the pain was just utterly agonizing and tormenting. Whether it was due to the pain or the exhaustion my body suffered, my mind slowly drifted off and I couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer. As my eyes gradually closed, the blazing siren seemed to have grown louder little by
