served 152 people and had 6 volunteers. The Salvation Army survives greatly because of their volunteers and help from the community. The volunteers come on their lunch breaks and other spare time to help. Everyone still gets served even with the huge number difference. 5. What percentage of your staff lives in the community that you serve? Half to One third of the staff lives in the community. The staff is extremely small only 6 members. 6. Is your organization for profit or non-profit organization? Probe: Where does your funding come from? The Salvation Army is a non-profit organization. They receive all of their funding and help from donations and volunteers. They receive the largest contributions during the Thanksgiving and Christmas …show more content…
seasons. They have people that are called Bell Ringers that ring bells and collect donations on the organizations behalf. The money collected at that time is not only used for that time period. The funds have to be stretched to use for the whole year. They appreciate all forms of donations not just monetary. As I was waiting for my interview there was a group of about five people that where there for the Bell Ringers orientation. 7. What are your program goals? Probe: Out of these goals what is the primary goal? The mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
The primary goal is the idea of God and that God is very important. They do feel that God and social services are both equally important. They state they love God and love people as God has taught. They brought hope to people. 8. What kinds of difficulties does your community face? Probe: What sort of influence does your program have on these difficulties? Clinton, Lower East Side, and Greenwich Village face difficult in available jobs and places to stay. They state that across Manhattan a person on a fixed income cannot afford to live. They try to meet the people at whatever level of need they have. Whether it be getting an ID, or helping someone in a shelter go back to school, or helping a person apply for services. 9. What percentage of the population that you serve do you think is affected by these difficulties? About 65%, because about 35% have jobs and homes but are not making ends meet. The 65% I would say are homeless and come to the soup kitchen. The numbers could be off because not everyone that comes to the soup kitchen is homeless they may just be hungry and not have enough money for …show more content…
food. 10. How did this organization come about? What were some of the challenges you faced in the beginning? The organization came about with vision to help people. The program started in 1852 by William Booth. Whose goal was for people to not just know about the bible but to feel the love of God! He felt the best way to do this was for him to bring serve to other people. He also felt that he could not help a person spiritual needs if their physical need were lacking. That is the foundation of the Salvation Army’s existence. Booth came up with three S’s Soul, Soap, and Salvation. The organization is universal existing in 129 different countries. Booth took his message directly to the people which led to disagreements with the church leaders in London. They wanted him to use the traditional method. He did not follow what the church demanded, instead he conducted his own meetings. He grew a following dedicated to fighting for the souls of men and women. The rest is history. 11. What areas of your program do you feel have improved since your opening, and what do you feel still needs to be improved upon? They have improved in strategies on who is truly in need of their services. They have to go through an assessment with a caseworker. There are areas to improve because they cannot cover everyone. Also the fact that some people try to take advantage of the serves provided. They have to make sure that the people receiving the services are truly in need. For example people will go to other churches receive services and then come to the Salvation Army for more service. A grandmother will come for Christmas gifts for seven of her grandchild but none of them live with her. A friend will live with a friend and her child and request pantry food twice separately for one household. 12.
What does this organization hope to achieve in 2-3 years and how do you think it will help the community/populations that you serve? What they would like to achieve is to make people understand that with God in their sprit no matter where they are in social it make it a lot better. To give them hope and help them understand that it’s okay to ask for help because their situation is momentary. That their situation shall pass and change their mentality that they have to fight for their future and not only rely on public things. That they are capable and can do better than that. That they can teach them how to fish so they can do it from now on. They do for them today in hopes that they will do for someone else
tomorrow.
The Salvation Army prides itself in continuously offering needs based programs or service to communities that fall below the poverty line. The Salvation Army has a wide array of strengths including: 1) Professional networking; a channel through which ideas, resources and services can be exchanged between Salvation Army and other non-profit organizations 2) Global notoriety; the Salvation Army is a world-wide organization, sustained primarily through government funds and public donations 3) Longevity; a demonstrated history of success. This history of longevity affords them a positive, solid reputation in participating communities (The Salvation Army USA, 2018).
Non-Profit organizations are a major mold in society in general, and they continue to help advance many of the social causes of our time. From the description, we know that employee and volunteer morale is quite low, and that is the fault of the senior management. In an organization, it is important that each individual knows that they are contributing to something larger than themselves. In many cases, employees seek to work somewhere where they can earn a living, but also where they can become a member of a team, and feel a sense of purpose. When they are not treated with respect or given the ability to make their own decisions, they lose engagement and become stagnant in their work. Volunteers look for much of the same thing; they are, after
The nonprofit sector in America is a reflection some of the foundational values that brought our nation into existence. Fundamentals, such as the idea that people can govern themselves and the belief that people should have the opportunity to make a difference by joining a like-minded group, have made America and its nonprofit sector what it is today. The American "civil society" is one that has been produced through generations of experiments with government policy, nonprofit organizations, private partnerships, and individuals who have asserted ideas and values. The future of the nonprofit sector will continue to be experimental in many ways. However, the increase of professional studies in nonprofit management and the greater expectation of its role in society is causing executives to look to more scientific methods of management.
The number of people in extreme poverty has been increasing since 1999, accounting for 39% of people in poverty, and making less than half the amount of income a person considered in poverty makes. With this amount of people living in poverty, it's no wonder why there are so many homeless people today. The reason people are in poverty is because of inflation since the 1970s, and the loss of affordable housing projects. This accounts for almost all homelessness, but there are also other factors that can contribute as well. There are many people with addiction problems that make them homeless.
Even though the cost of living can be very high most residents never have to worry about paying for a car. Taking a train, subway, or taxi is cheaper than paying for a place to park a car each month and the time it would take to drive through the cities traffic. In the western region of New York seeing an apartment complex isn’t very common, but living in an apartment is considered the norm for the residents that live in New York City because houses are way over priced for the average person. Living in the city compared to a small western region town can help means of transportation, future personal success, and overall make life easier but at a fast
“We organize and advocate to prevent and end homelessness, because we believe that housing is a human right in a just society.” They are similar to the national coalition for the homeless, but, of course, are focused locally, in Chicago. They run several programs and campaigns focusing mostly on community outreach and immediately helping those experiencing homelessness. They have a program that gives homeless legal education and assistance, and a re-entry program to help the recently unincarcerated find housing and jobs, as well as a general 'Jobs ' program, creating work for the homeless.
New York City is claimed to be one of the greatest cities in the world. Many are blinded by the breathtaking skyline, the endless opportunities, and the hustle and bustle of the streets. As one of the economic capitals of the world, it is surprising to hear that about 30 percent of children currently residing in New York City are living in poverty (Cheney). New York City has evolved into a city for the wealthy by eliminating inexpensive housing and jobs, forcing many families to the streets (Elliot). Many are unaware of how prevalent child poverty is.
While Soup Kitchens are a way to feed the poor or homeless, it not a program that effectively helps the homeless onto their feet, it simply keeps them fed. (www.merriam-webster.com) These do help the unsheltered homeless population though. While there are shelters, not everyone has access to them or some even chose not to go. In the city of Los Angeles, there are about 27,000 homeless people who are unsheltered, that’s 1 in 378. There are various factors that cause homelessness; these include a decline in public assistance, domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, job loss, divorce, low wages, poverty, severe depression, physical disabilities or mental illnesses. From the year 2011 to 2012, the number of homeless people skyrocketed. In New York City alone, there are more homeless people in the year 2014 than there were in the recession of the 1980s. The mission of the organization is to empower the Mexican and Latino community. We have ESL, classes, citizenship classes, computer skills classes, these are educational opportunities where people can come from any nationality come in and learn the skills. We also have a legal support area
Some of those residents have lost their jobs due to the economic recession, created by the bankers on the other side of the river (Park Avenue). The wages of these poor citizens have dropped in the past thirty years, while prices have sky rocketed. Even though economic and social hardships have struck these innocent citizens, they still have a chance at achieving the American dream, right? After all, this is America, the land of opportunity, the place where dreams are born and bred. However, America is not what it once was fifty years ago.
The Salvation Army is a Christian church and international charitable organization. The Salvation Army was founded in 1865, in the East End of London, by William Booth (Salvation, n.d). Booth was an evangelist who wanted to offer practical help to the poor and as well as preaching the Gospel to them. However, it originally was called the Christian Mission, but Booth had changed its name to the Salvation Army in 1878 (TheSalvation, n.d). In addition, “Is a protestant denomination of the Christian Church with over 1.6 million members in 109 countries” (BBC, n.d). The Salvation Army is “famous for its work with people who have fallen on hard times: it offers help to the elderly, the young, offenders, drug addicts and blind and disabled people;
I would have to say that at Chapman Partnership there are a great variety of benefit types and services that are available to the clients who receive help there, it is a residential facility that provides individual and also family (group) help. This help is for homeless individuals and families that needs some help getting back on their feet and being able to provide for themselves and their families. The website does not list any goals but from my observation of the information that I have taken combined with what I see when I am volunteering there I believe that one of their main goals is to restore the foundation of the family’s finances and their stability. This program is funded through many government grants and government funding programs. According to the website “Chapman Partnership is a Charity Navigator 4-Star charity, having achieved the highest rating for non-profits. Chapman Partnership is acknowledged for sound fiscal management, transparency and accountability” (Chapman Partnership). They depends on a variety of public and also private funding sources and donations o...
Nonprofits are organizations whose income is not used for the benefit or gain of stockholders, directors or any other persons with an interest in the organization. The nonprofit sector is very diverse; it includes tax-exempt organizations that are educational, scientific and cultural, as well as civic and social welfare organizations. Nonprofits usually work to advance a cause or interest or to accomplish some good work. Some job seekers overlook nonprofit organizations, assuming that opportunities are limited and salaries are uniformly low. This is not true.
For more than 130 years, The Salvation Army has helped women, children, elderly men, families, and addicts overcome hard times. The Gospel Rescue Missions also help anyone and they do not mind age, religion, race, origin or color. With programs all over the country, The Department of Veterans Affairs target to help homeless veterans and those who depend on them. Another organization is Feeding America, who are a hunger relief charity and they take the lead with helping with the homeless. They provide food assistance to 25 million people throughout the country with low income, which includes elderly and the youth. All across the country there are homeless shelters that provide free clothing and warm food; some shelters even have different areas for the men, women, and women with children to sleep. This helps to ensure comfort and safety to everyone. Some even find employment and medical services (Homelessness in America). There are some who still live on the streets and have no options, whether there is no room at a shelter, they have no hope, they are addicted, etc. sometimes the better option for some people is to resort to the
The Charity Organization Society was based in the scientific movement of organizations. Workers believed that charity work needed more definition and organization and that charity should be focused more on individual need rather than as a whole population. Focusing on individual need was intended to improve relief operations while making resources more efficient. They also intended to eliminate public outdoor relief. With the promotion of more organization and efficiency the new Charity Organization Societies were born. Trattner states that these new requirements for organization and efficiency spread so “rapidly that within 6 years 25 cities had such organizations and by the turn of the century there were some 138 of them in existence” (Trattner, 1999).
