In Class None Without Sin Essay The documentary, None Without Sin, describes the choices that the artists Arthur Miller and Elliot Kazan made during the times of the red scare. Although Kazan confesses names to preserve his own Hollywood life, resisting to give names, like what Miller did, is the better choice and is more beneficial in the long run. In the beginning of the film, the narrator describes how the actions of Kazan were still scorned 50 years later. At first, Kazan was a member of the communist party, but later hated it and switched sides. When pressured by the HUAC to names people involved with the communist party, Kazan eventually confessed to prevent himself from losing his Hollywood fame. Despite Miller losing Hollywood credibility and being sentenced to jail time, Miller was named the hero of the Mccarthy era. Miller believed that “betrayal is the only truth that sticks,” and looking back at the red scare several years later, many people still believe that what Kazan did was wrong and purley for his own benefit. With the choice Miller made, Miller decided to protest the Mccarthy trials in a unique way by writing The Crucible. The Crucible, is a play set in Salem Massachusetts, during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The play highlights the unjust suspicion of being a witch, similar to being a communist during the Mccarthy trials. The Crucible was not so successful at the time according to the media because writing a good review of it would seem like they are supporting Miller’s ideas.
