Percy Shelley was born on August 4th, 1792 to his parents Timothy and Elizabeth Shelley. Even though he lived in a very conservative household, he had a very radical nonconformist attitude. He was sent to Syon House Academy and Eton College, during which he was subjected to bullying and scoffed at for his beliefs. He later went to Oxford, where he stayed for less than a year before being expelled for his publishings (“Percy Bysshe Shelley 1792-1822.” poetryfoundation.org). Despite being against the idea of marriage, he married a woman by the name of Harriet Westbrook, and later a woman named Mary, who became famous for her novel titled Frankenstein (“Percy Bysshe Shelley.” poets.org). He was disowned by his family, but still continued to write and publish what he believed was right. He believed his school bullies and school masters represented man’s general inhumanity towards their fellow man. Several of his works state the tyranny of religion and the oppressive government has on the population, including one of his works “The Masque of Anarchy”. He was also a big animal rights activist, believing that animals were being treated wrongfully treated and slaughtered, which is why he promoted vegetarianism and a natural diet in many of his works. He supported the lower classes, and believing they were taken advantage of, and he was determined to inspire them. He encouraged his followers to throw off those who oppress them such as the royal courts, churches, government systems, and legal courts, and to rebel against social normality. His peaceful approach to his defiance inspired many passive resistances of leaders such as Ghandi, Karl Marx, and Upton Sinclair (“Percy Bysshe Shelley.”
The central theme in all of them is that he was not in an environment that taught him to live what is considered a normal life. The people he was surrounded by and who had the most influence on him were the ones who taught him to be the way he was and act the way he did. If he had lived in a different city, or had different role models growing up, then maybe he would not have been led into a life of crime. I had the opportunity to read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley several years ago and it became one of my favorite books. My initial feeling was sorrow, what a wonderful story that has been slowly destroyed by Hollywood through the years. We think of Victor Frankenstein as a mad scientist trying to destroy mankind, and the monster having bolts in his neck with very little intellect. Mary Shelley’s book is completely different from the Hollywood version we are accustom to. The monster is intelligent and has emotions, the mad scientist or Victor was scared of his own creation due to his appearance. The monster initially showed no signs of evil in the novel, but where did he learn it from? Who is the real evil monster

In her time she was a British novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, a travel-writer and her Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus 1818. Marry Shelley, when she made a conscious decision to produce Frankenstein, she literally collected her own demons together to create her own autobiography in Frankenstein. Her book shows heartbreak towards conception. In other words where she had problems of having children of her own, she wanted to show this in her book. The author of Frankenstein also managed to make it a science-fiction novel of its time as one of the classics.
Mary Shelley wrote ‘Frankenstein’ also known as ‘The Modern Prometheus’ in 1818, when she was seventeen. Shelley was born in 1797 and married Percy Bysshe in 1816. Shelley’s husband died in 1822 aged twenty-nine, Shelley died in 1851 aged fifty-four. Shelly was raised by her father, her mother died when she was just ten days old. Her mother was a famous feminist writer and philosopher, her father was an anarchist philosopher, atheist and journalist. Shelley had an excellent education when she was eleven.
The classic Frankenstein by Mary Shelley has many themes within it. These themes are both obvious and inconspicuous. These themes involve family and isolation; ambition and fallibility; secrecy; revenge; prejudice; lost innocence; and knowledge, wisdom, and discernment.
Romantic writer Mary Shelley’s gothic novel Frankenstein does indeed do a lot more than simply tell story, and in this case, horrify and frighten the reader. Through her careful and deliberate construction of characters as representations of certain dominant beliefs, Shelley supports a value system and way of life that challenges those that prevailed in the late eighteenth century during the ‘Age of Reason’. Thus the novel can be said to be challenging prevailant ideologies, of which the dominant society was constructed, and endorsing many of the alternative views and thoughts of the society. Shelley can be said to be influenced by her mothers early feminist views, her father’s radical challenges to society’s structure and her own, and indeed her husband’s views as Romantics. By considering these vital influences on the text, we can see that in Shelley’s construction of the meaning in Frankenstein she encourages a life led as a challenge to dominant views.
The idea for the novel of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein came to her one night when she was staying in the company of what has been called ‘her male coterie’, including Lord Byron and her husband, Percy Shelley. Mary Shelley’s whole life seems to have been heavily influenced by men. She idolised her father, William Godwyn, and appears to have spent a good part of her life trying very hard to impress both him and her husband. There seems to have been a distinct lack of female influence, her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, having died weeks after her birth, being replaced by a neglectful step-mother. These aspects of her life are perhaps evident in her novel. The characters and plot of Frankenstein were perhaps influenced by Shelley’s conflicting feelings about the predominately masculine circle which surrounded her, and perhaps the many masculine traits that we see in novel were based upon those of the male figures in Shelley’s own life. In this essay I will attempt to show some of these traits.
In 1822, Mary Shelley’s husband drowned. Around 1814 Shelley fell in love with a deemed ‘forbidden’ person, as did Frankenstein with Elizabeth. This left Shelley alone, as her good friend and poet Lord Byron had also died, as had her son William. Her half sister had committed suicide in 1816. Whilst writing Frankenstein, Shelley was reading ‘Emile’ by the French philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
