Shakespeare throughout many of his famous stories glorified famous figures due to the fact they would take care of everything and everyone. In large households during the Elizabethan Era, masters would hire servants or nannies to perform duties that they could not finish due to the fact of not having time or being busy all the time with business. Servants did not receive the respect they deserved even though they took pride in their roles and responsibilities. After five hundred years, these ethics have carried their way into our world today. Servants and nannies of the Elizabethan Era had multiple roles, responsibilities, limitations, and privileges that are similar to the ones of modern day nannies and personal servants.
Elizabethan servants in large households had roles and responsibilities which were to be upheld. For example, a chamberlain was a popular, needed servant in large households. The master’s chief personal servant was known as the chamberlain and was responsible for all the household servants (Olsen). Chamberlains would ensure that all servants would keep up with their tasks. As well, the chamberlain would prepare the master’s bedroom such as making sure the master would have clean sheets. In addition, the page was a beloved servant by the master of the household. “Another personal servant was the page, a boy or young man in medieval times often the son of a relative or friends’ who accompanied the master and ran his errands” (592-597). This young man or boy was honorably dressed and was much more educated that most servants. Since he served in the master’s bedroom, he was quite powerful with vast authority throughout the household. Furthermore, the maid and butler were important servants in households. Waiting w...

...stand out have multiple degrees including the master’s degree (Blecher). Parents look for nannies and/or personal servants that are educated because kids will have to complete homework that they may need help with, but parents are exhausted after a long day of work. Working late, parents will not assist their children with homework which will not allowing parents to get sleep that is needed. Yet wages were low five hundred years ago, a year-round nanny or personal servant makes an outstanding amount of money. Surveys were conducted and found that nannies receive an average of sixteen dollars an hour and a high earning nanny can earn hundred thousand dollars a year or more a year depending on location, education, and references. Most year round nannies receive exceptional pay compared to many other jobs. Hundred thousand dollars annually is over the average salary.
The average hourly rate ranges from $8 per hour to $20 per hour. The number of hours a nanny works can range from 20 hours per week to 60 hours per week.
...a replica of their own parents. If a child wanted to become more successful in life they would have had to trick someone into believing they were from a higher class and hope to get an apprenticeship from that individual. With the lack of education of the low class that would be extremely difficult and almost impossible. For these reasons and more Elizabethan low class children could not even imagine a life unlike the life of their parent.
Surprisingly to the majority, the nanny jobs may be a notably tightened one. If an individual is interested in nannying as a career as a result of the notion that it chiefly consists of buzzing lullabies to babies to send them off to never-never land, then they'll be enlightened once the truth sets in. Not everybody will be a nanny. It's physically and showing emotion tightened, and as we tend to are liable for young lives, mistakes merely should not happen. Babies learning to crawl will tumble down steps, toddles will reach for and grasp a cup of hot occasional.
In conclusion, gender role in Elizabethan era is very complex with respect to women’s role. Men are the masters of the home and society; they preside over every aspect of life. They are however, expected to take care of their family and also be actively involved in politics, war, and they inherit their father’s properties. Women role varied a according to their social status. All women were raised to be subservient to men. Unlike upper class women, lower class women were denied any kind of education. And all women are expected to get married and bear children. The qualities Shakespeare gave Beatrice are very significant because it contrasts traditional Elizabethan theater. Gender role has evolved over time, especially women’s role and it will continue to evolve as long as there are women like Beatrice around.
William Shakespeare is well known for being a poet, playwright, and actor. Shakespeare's work appears to be very sexist in gender roles. He uses gender roles in his 'Romeo & Juliet' play. Juliet being the main and most important female role in this play; is supposed to be noble and respectful, but instead she goes against her father’s wishes and acts more educated than she really is. Romeo being the main male role in this play is supposed to be focused and noble, but instead he is passionate in love and isn't very wise with decisions but in comparison to Paris, who is very masculine, focused and noble shows a real renaissance male. This paper will demonstrate how Shakespeare uses gender role reversement ; by having feminism and masculinity, arrangement of marriages, and compare and contrast of different characters to prove the model of genders in Elizabethan England.
Queen Elizabeth I ruled for much of Shakespeare’s life in England and therefore had a great impact on his work. She had a big role in the social arts and culture. Affecting many peoples’ lives in England; she especially affected those in the arts. She supported artists in their work in many different ways. Shakespeare and his theatre being one of the artists she supported. The Queen would come to the theatres to enjoy a show, and whether or not she enjoyed it would be the result of the popularity and success of that play. Shakespeare made a living out of his play writings; the Queen would come and spend many pounds to see a play. This being the reason why Shakespeare would create characters appealing to his Queen.
“It is a wise father that knows his own child” stated by William Shakespeare, a poet, which suggests that a good parent must have a connection with their child. However, Shakespeare lacked parental affection, the plays that Shakespeare had written, never had a well established relationship between a parent and their child. However the correlation between a parent and child may vary in many occasions and factors such as a healthy/unhealthy relationship, a tempting desire for self success, and a change of heart. Therefore, through an analysis of Jeannette Wall’s The Glass Castle, William Shakespeare’s King Lear, Tennessee William’s The Glass Menagerie, and Martin Fan’s bond with His parents, it becomes clear that the establishments between a
In conclusion, Shakespeare has used the concept of honour and fidelity throughout the play. He shows many different aspects of honour and fidelity through his characters, the contrasting differences between men and women. He shows us how important these traits are to Elizabethan society and if honour was ever lost in the upper classes the consequences were never too pleasant. Shakespeare even shows us the true loyalty between Benedick and Beatrice which gives insight to his feminist views which were quite modern for the time.
Women in Verona during the time of the Renaissance had a completely different place in society than the men did. Juliet, Lady Capulet, and the Nurse were the only female characters in the play, but were able to illustrate the roles that all women had during that time period. All women during the Renaissance time, based on the characters of Romeo and Juliet matured more quickly then women do today, played a subservient role in society, and played the role of an object to possess. Their roles show that they were powerless compared to men, but still had an important role in society. Women have gained significant control and influence since Romeo and Juliet was written, but unfortunately there are still many cases around the world where women are secondary to men.
The other servants in the house are Rita and Cora, the Marthas who do the cooking and housework, and Nick the chauffeur, who later becomes Offred's lover. Throughout the historical literary periods, many writers underrepresented and undervalued the role of women in society, even more, they did not choose to yield the benefits of the numerous uses of the female character concerning the roles which women could accomplish as plot devices and literary tools. William Shakespeare was one playwright who found several uses for female characters in his works. Despite the fact that in Shakespeare's history play, Richard II, he did not use women in order to implement the facts regarding the historical events. Instead, he focused the use of women roles by making it clear that female characters significantly enriched the literary and theatrical facets of his work. Furthermore in Shakespeare’s history play, King Richard II, many critics have debated the role that women play, especially the queen. One of the arguments is that Shakespeare uses the queen’s role as every women’s role to show domestic life and emotion. Jo McMurtry explains the role of all women in his book, Understanding Shakespeare’s England A Companion for the American Reader, he states, “Women were seen, legally and socially, as wives. Marriage was a permanent state” (5). McMurtry argues that every woman’s role in the Elizabethan society is understood to be a legal permanent state that is socially correct as wives and mothers. Other critics believe that the role of the queen was to soften King Richard II’s personality for the nobles and commoners opinion of him. Shakespeare gives the queen only a few speaking scenes with limited lines in Acts two, four, and five through-out the play. Also, she is mentioned only a few times by several other of the characters of the play and is in multiple scenes wit...
In William Shakespeare’s play “King Lear’, there are several issues that answer the questions about our duty to our fathers and our kings, as well as, whether there are ever circumstances when we should disobey them in order to do our duty to them. Our duty to our fathers and our kings is not only to love and obey them, show them respect and honor them, but it is also to humble them, keep them honest when necessary, keep them safe and protect them. You cannot have the praise without the discipline of being a good father or a good king. To be praised and worshiped as many kings and sometimes fathers are by their children, can breed a sense of entitlement that can be damaging to their character.
The article researchers emphasize the role of the nannies, “These women found meaning in their work, despite its low pay and devaluation by the client families, because they themselves gave inherent value to at-home mothering. Ultimately, however, this strategy ran afoul of the realities of their situation.
The play Othello is presented as a male-dominated society where women are only recognized as property; objects to own and to bear children. Women in the Elizabethan society and in Shakespeare society were not seen as equal to men and were expected to be loyal to their husbands, be respectful, and to not go against their husbands judgements or actions. Shakespeare presents Desdemona, Emilia , and Bianca as women in the Elizabethan time where they were judged based on their class, mortality, and intelligence. Shakespeare makes his female characters act the way they would be expected to act in an Elizabethan society. The role of these women in Othello is crucial because they show how women were treated and how unhealthy their relationships between men really were in both Elizabethan and Shakespeare's society.
In The Elizabethans by A.N Wilson, Wilson states “ The Elizabethan woman was not necessarily ...
