During the nineteenth century, white women feminist were demanding access to birth control, they wanted to be in control of their reproduction. In this birth control movement, it lacked the participation of women of colored. There was assumption on why women of color didn’t participate: women of color were fighting against racism or weren’t aware of sexism. In reality, women of colored couldn’t associate themselves to the cause because they exhibit sterilization abuse. In the birth control movement, white women were fighting for abortion right, they were fighting for them to have the decision to either keep or abort a child. Many people used to believe that the white race has inheritable desirable traits that must be maintained and conserve. Therefore, the concept of eugenics emerged, “the belief that the human race could be improved by encouraging the reproduction of those deemed to have inheritable desired traits/genes and discouraging those deemed to have undesirable traits/genes” (Lecture, 5/11). White people have desirable characteristics while non-white people were considered to stain and harm the white population. In order to control people with undesirable traits, they need to control women of color reproduction. This could be achieved through sterilization. Because of the belief of white supremacy, many women of color were forced into sterilization. The Virginia’s Racial Integrality Act of 1924 was a eugenics law that forced sterilization of inmates in prison and psychiatric institutions. (Lecture, 5/11). The government saw these women unfit to reproduce. This was later known as Buck v. Bell. This way, they could control their population from reproduction. Because of these women of color didn’t participate in the “Pro-choice” campaign because the government saw them unfit to control their reproduction which led to sterilization abuse. Eugenics sterilization was applied to women of color such as Mexican, Blacks, and Native Americans.
In the film, No Mas Bebes, there are a lot of cases where the Hispanic females was forced into sterilization. They will sign an authorization were they weren’t well aware of its meaning since they didn’t know how to speak or read English. Most of them weren’t aware that they couldn’t have babies anymore. In 1973, when Roe v. Wade occurred, the Supreme Court decision for the first time Supreme Court made birth control legal. This meant women have control of their reproduction even the right to have an abortion. Hispanic women didn’t participate in the abortion right moment because the white women were fighting for the right to decide to abort a child. Many of women of color couldn’t have children and they saw that white women were trying the right abort a baby. Therefore, the “Pro-choice” campaign wasn’t a cause Hispanic women could relate to or associate with. Instead of participating in the “Pro-choice” campaign women of color participated in the “Reproductive justice” campaign. The reproductive justice is a woman of color feminist movement that fights equally for the right not to have a child, the right to have a child and the right to parent their children as well to control birthing options (Lecture, 5/11). The abortion movement focus on white women only and it didn’t focus on the sterilization of women color had to endure. If women of color participate in the “Pro-choice”
campaign they will have to leave behind their race and story about sterilization abuse. White people were the dominant race because of their physical appearance consider as desirable traits. Anyone who wasn’t white was considered dangerous to the white population. We have learned that race is socially constructed therefore we should learn that no race is above the other race. Because what women of colored endured were because of racism, because they were giving birth to children who are not white.
Dorothy Wardell’s article titled “Margaret Sanger: Birth Control’s Successful Revolutionary” explains what inspired Sanger ideas on contraception and what problems she faced while working to change the notions and laws on Birth Control. The central argument presented by Wardell is that Sanger’s efforts led to privileges for women’s bodies and health centers providing methods for women to act on these privileges (Wardell, 736). Although Wardell is effective in supporting her argument, it would be stronger if she included some historical context and evidence of Sanger’s opinion in her own words found in a speech of hers and in Family Limitation.
The first primary source I chose was written by Margaret Sanger. Margaret was a white woman that came from a working class family. She also had a very strong background in being an advocate for women's rights to birth control. Sanger even lander herself in jail for giving contraceptives to women. Margaret’s background with birth control might have influenced her writings because she had a first hand experience with the subject. This source is informative and the intended audience is for all women. Knowing that the audience is directed toward woman helps me know what perspective to look at her writing. Margaret Sanger was, at large, a birth control activist, but this speech was more about the questioning of birth control corrupting morality in women. People must remember, in the day and age where Sanger presented this speech, November 1921, women were considered very far from equal and much closer to servants or maids. In her speech, I saw that ethos was present in the sense that she gave herself credibility. Through Sanger’s detailed words and actions, and her statements including the presence of scientists and, or, professionals, the masses of listening people could infer that she was very well informed and solid in her statements. Though she presented herself as agreeable, Sanger was firm in her beliefs. In addition, Sanger says, “We desire to stop at its source the disease, poverty and feeble-mindedness and insanity which exist today, for these lower the standards of civilization and make for race deterioration. We know that the masses of people are growing wiser and are using their own minds to decide their individual conduct” (Sanger, par.15). Margaret Sanger though a determined selfish women did not get everything the way she wanted it to be. She hung up fliers in immigrant neighborhoods just so the poor or colored would go to the clinic. She wanted these people to go to the birth control clinics so they couldn’t reproduce. Margaret believed that if you couldn’t support the family you already have you shouldn’t have more children and she was a strong believer that the inferior race should not be able to reproduce. All of Mrs. Sanger’s actions said more then what her voice said. Margaret Sanger was a powerful strong woman who was celebrated as an advocate of women’s rights; however her motives were for all the wrong reasons.

No woman can call herself free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother"(Sanger A 35). Margaret Sanger (1870-1966)said this in one of her many controversial papers. The name of Margaret Sanger and the issue of birth control have virtually become synonymous. Birth control and the work of Sanger have done a great deal to change the role of woman in society, relationships between men and woman, and the family. The development and spread of knowledge of birth control gave women sexual freedom for the first time, gave them an individual identity in society and a chance to work without fearing they were contributing to the moral decline of society by leaving children at home. If birth control and Sanger did so much good to change the role of women in society why was birth control so controversial?
In the weekly readings for week five we see two readings that talk about the connections between women’s suffrage and black women’s identities. In Rosalyn Terborg-Penn’s Discontented Black Feminists: Prelude and Postscript to the Passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, we see the ways that black women’s identities were marginalized either through their sex or by their race. These identities were oppressed through social groups, laws, and voting rights. Discontented Black Feminists talks about the journey black feminists took to combat the sexism as well as the racism such as forming independent social clubs, sororities, in addition to appealing to the government through courts and petitions. These women formed an independent branch of feminism in which began to prioritize not one identity over another, but to look at each identity as a whole. This paved the way for future feminists to introduce the concept of intersectionality.

Their rights continued to progress when both white and black women were given the right to vote, although it still didn’t have the impact that was expected. Not only were women given more rights, but they also started attending schools and seeking employment. This was a big step for women, but men interpreted this as a threat to the balance of power. Weitz stated that after new “scientific” ideas were combined with old definitions of women’s bodies, due to their ill and fragile bodies, “white middle-class women were unable to sustain the responsibilities of political power or the burdens of education or employment.”
Suffragists fought very hard for nearly a century to get the Nineteenth Amendment passed. Most people are aware of the great efforts by such suffragists as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, originating in the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848. However, what many people do not realize is the eugenic and racist ideas that the suffragists espoused. Why did the suffragists have these ideals, and where did they get them from? But when the “Women’s Movement,” is referred to, one would most likely think about the strides taken during the 1960’s for equal treatment of women. The sixties started off with a bang for women, as the Food and Drug Administration approved birth control pills, President John F. Kennedy established the President's Commission on the Status of Women and appointed Eleanor Roosevelt as chairwoman, and Betty Friedan published her famous and groundbreaking book, “The Feminine Mystique” (Imbornoni). The Women’s Movement of the 1960’s was a ground-breaking part of American history because along with African-Americans another minority group stood up for equality, women were finished with being complacent, and it changed women’s lives today.
Imagine in today in America’s hyper-sexualized society, not being provided with any knowledge about contraception or sex education. Before Margaret Sanger’s activism, most women were in this position of oblivion about their own bodies. In “Morality of Birth Control”, Sanger argues effectively for the legalization and acceptance of both birth control and sex education using ethos, pathos, and logos to strengthen her argument.
Birth Control has always been a topic of controversy in America, generating large opposition and actions to regulate it. The regulation of any form of birth control was made final with the Comstock Act being passed in 1873 that was a, “federal law that made it a crime to sell or distribute materials that could be used for contraception or abortion”. This act created by and enacted by Anthony Comstock, caused a long and troubling path for feminists attempting to break the patriarchal society and gain the freedom to control their own bodies and choices.
