Greasy pizza, stale nachos, and soggy chicken are just some examples of the kind of foods that are being served in our cafeteria. Students of Fairfield High School have to stomach these unsatisfying and unhealthy lunches every day for a whole school year. A needed improvement to our school menu is long overdue. To our principal, Dr. Cushman and to our district superintendent, along with my fellow classmates, we as a collective whole have decided that we deserve to be fed healthy and delicious lunch meals, not the frozen and processed foods that we are currently being provided with.
In an interview I conducted with Glenda Eliarda, a nurse of nearly 10 years, Mrs. Eliarda said that majority of the meals offered in our school are not nutritious. Pizza, nachos, fries, and chips are not highly beneficial to our health and development. Students should consume more meals that include leafy green vegetables and fresh fruits. Even though our school does offer healthy alternatives like salads and snack packs, giving us an option to eat unhealthily is one of the major problems I believe that needs to be addressed.

Entirely eliminating unhealthy foods from the school menu will substantially lessen the possibility of students choosing to eat the foods that are relatively equivalent to fast foods. Instead, the school menu should contain healthy and appetizing meals that are easy to prepare. I suggest keeping the “good foods” which are the salads, snack packs which contains celery and seasonal fruits, and the chicken wrap. In addition, I suggest adding more healthy meal options like tuna & white bean wraps, chicken quinoa burrito bowls instead of the tasteless Asian rice bowls, and bean burgers instead of the processed smokey barbeque
Schools with enormous food courts where students can buy meals and drinks from commonly known franchises, such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola, are the schools with the most health problems. Fast-food franchises are showing up everywhere, but do these businesses belong in high schools? No! Schools are here to enlighten students for life after school. If high schools promote bad eating habits by placing fast-food franchises in their cafeterias, then how can students eat right and healthy beyond high school.
One reason our school should get a new lunch menu is many students do not like the food served. For example, a survey was taken and of the 31 students 100% said they disliked the food. As student Bryan Huang said, “The lunches are horrible, they need better choices and more choices.” In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. Also, when children don’t get proper nutrition they have trouble focusing in school. Most students do not buy lunch because they feel it is unappealing and do not like the food served. Many students go to other kids and ask for food. In addition, many students do not eat breakfast so they rely on lunch to fuel them for the day. The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. With the implementation of the “Healthy Kids Hunger-Free Act” schools are not serving as many lunches and participation is decreasing. The only reason majority of schools haven’t switched to a healthier lunch food supplier is because there are cheaper alternatives. Schools should switch their lunch providers to a healthier alternative. Should cost really determine how healthy students are? Many students skip lunch merely because of its low quality taste, and some students even protested a lunch providing company called Sodexo, which provides lunch for prisons as well as most schools. Schools that have switched are seeing an increase in students’ moods, productivity, and most importantly- grades.
School lunch menu should be healthy and nutritious for the students. There are several ways to fix the school lunch menu problems. In many schools, they are selling/providing junk food like chips, cookies, sugared liquids, candy, and most other snakes. From the ages of five to eighteen years old, the school is the main environment that students are in. Especially throughout the adolescent years, a monumental time in growth and development of personal values, a student’s environment, in this case the school, is a large factor affecting the values and habits that student develops for the rest of his or her life. Another environment with significant causes to students’ mindset as a whole is the entertainment industry. Companies over-advertise greasy and unhealthy foods and school children are extremely susceptible to their influence. It is unequivocally vital to understand that even though a child may not eat unhealthy school lunches, the fact that schools established a social norm for serving nutritionally insufficient meals is enough to negatively impact that student’s views on nutrition. Several of lunch table conversations include discussions about the food one is eating and how delicious or horrible the lunch is. Have you ever tasted school cafeteria food? I don’t think you would want to. In school story books, do you have characters saying that the food tasted good at school cafeterias? Nope. Why is this? Cafeteria food is often cheap, bought in bulk, high in calories, malnutritious, and microwaved. Student polls and opinions prove this. Therefore, this leads to a suggestion: Healthier, tastier foods and a better, advanced lunch system should be implemented.
We have the problems locally and nationally with our school lunches. Kids locally and nationally are not grasping the nutrition/ fresh food that they need in school lunches. Locally and nationally this is all depending on where schools buy their food from. Also, locally and nationally they have a difference locally the problem is that school lunches do not have enough fresh food they only have fresh fruit. School food students go to the cafeteria five times a week and eat the food the school districts provide them. I am writing to you on behalf of me and my fellow grade nine students at Tiller Junior High School who help operate the canteen. It has been brought to my attention that there is a vast selection of unhealthy snacks. I would like to help everyone stay healthy and fit. I have done some research and gathered information for you on healthy eating in school, as well as a program to introduce to help kids stay physically and mentally healthy.
