In our lifetime, we face many challenges and while some of us may fail in our attempts, others will surmount their obstacles and come out stronger. It is how these individuals deal with their obstacles that determines the inner strength they possess to overcome their challenges. While the weaker individuals would be unable to deal with the challenges, those with a strong will would be able to stand firmly up against their challenges. Elie Wiesel shares, in his book, Night, the horrific experiences in the Nazi German concentration camps him and the Jews had to endure. While some Jews were able to cope with the perilous atmosphere that surrounded them, others were simply unable to do so. Through Night, Elie Wiesel develops the idea that an individual’s capacity to overcome adversity is correlated with the strength of that individual’s inner desire to succeed. An individual may lose all reason to live when they lose sight of one source of inspiration that they held. After Eliezer and his father arrive at the Auschwitz concentration camp, they encounter Stein, a relative from Antwerp, Belgium. Eliezer remembers him as the husband to Reizel, his mother’s niece. Stein was able to withstand suffering, beating and the lack of food since the year 1942 because of his strong desire to return to his wife and two small boys. Stein regularly told Eliezer, “The only thing that keeps me alive is to know that Reizel and the little ones are still alive. Were it not for them, I would give up” (Wiesel, 45). Stein’s family served as the sole source of his inspiration, allowing him to keep carrying on all the weight of his pain. Stein would only have to picture himself being back with his family to regain his strength. Eliezer understood that the ... ... middle of paper ... ...ll arrive]” (Wiesel 81). At the end, only those individuals who kept their inspirations close to heart were able to find their inner strengths and walk away as liberated men and women. Through the book, Night, the author conveys the idea that the desire to reach a dream can allow an individual to overcome all their adversity. Whereas, when there is a loss of hope, there is a loss of a goal. Keeping faith and holding on to their dreams are beneficial, for they provide individuals with the strength necessary to keep carrying on all the weight of their pain and sufferings. The desire to succeed is essential if an individual hopes to achieve any dream, whether that dream is as small as passing an exam or as large as surviving in a concentration camp. The power to overcome every adversity lies deep within every individual; one must simply reach inside and grasp it.
