One of the greatest questions that humans seek the answer to is “What happens to a person when they die?”. There are many different ideas about what happens to a person’s body and soul and many religions have a place of continued existence for both bodies and souls. Christians believe in the concept of heaven and Hindus believe in nirvana. In the Hindu religion, nirvana is the final place where a soul goes after its journey through different lifetimes. The word nirvana means “going out” or “to extinguish” (Borkataky-Varma, 2015). Hindus illustrate nirvana, or moksha, as a series of lamps, each being lit by another until the final lamp goes out (Borkataky-Varma, 2015). In order to reach nirvana, a soul must reach upper castes and eliminate …show more content…
Heaven is place of happiness and joy and Nirvana is a place of nothingness, which is the most desirable state for Hindus (Borkataky-Varma, 2015). Christians believe that each soul has one lifetime and after it is lived and the person dies, they will be welcomed into heaven if they lived their life according to God’s instructions (Charlton, 2016). Unlike heaven, Nirvana is considered a state of mind, rather than a place. Hindu people believe every soul lives multiple lifetimes. Finally, once nirvana is reached, it is believed that not only is the body lost, but so is the identity of the individual whereas in Christianity, both the soul and the body are eternally kept. Similarities between heaven and nirvana are that they both occur after death and are the ultimate, most desirable resting place for one’s soul. Both heaven and nirvana are places where pain no longer exists and you are reunited, in some way, with the higher power. They are reached through good behavior and abiding by the religion’s rules and standards. Ultimately, no one truly knows what happens to a person after they die. Whether or not their body or soul ceases to exist or continues to exist in another realm will always be a concept which humans attempt to
By learning from the Dharma, understanding The Four Noble Truths, three jewels, living by the five precepts, and following the eightfold path will assist to the completed path of enlightenment. Nirvana, which means to extinguish or unbind, is when a Buddhist has reached a state in which he has gained knowledge and freedom from what ever has bound him from reaching nirvana. Whether it be passion, desire, jealousy, egotism, or ignorance. When nirvana has been reached then there will be complete release from the samsara and karmic cycles.
Afterlife myths explain what becomes of the soul after the body dies, as humans have a problem accepting the possibility that the soul becomes nothing.
Both of these religions originated in India. Buddhists and Hindus believe that death is not final. They believe that a person comes back after he or she dies. This process is known as reincarnation, and it provides opportunities for people to enter the world multiple times in different forms. Buddhists and Hindus want to reenter the world as humans, and they want to improve their status through reincarnation.
The spirit within one is eternal, indestructible, and never changes. Because death is inevitable to all creatures, humans have been perplexed with the concept of death and an afterlife for centuries. Once we are deceased, does our soul become confined underground, or does it transcend to a divine world? According to different religious texts, there are different steps one must take in order to reach salvation and the afterlife. Although Genesis text and the Bhagavad Gita originate from two different religions that do not directly address an afterlife, they both speak of the soul and higher entities, which imply a final resting place for the soul that can be achieved through sacrifice, prayer, and devotion; this in return provides
The five Eastern religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, and Shinto have some similarities when it comes to the their beliefs on death. Hinduism and Buddhism both believe in karma and reincarnation, while Daoism and Shintoism revolve their beliefs around nature. Confucianism chooses not to focus on things we do not know, so their beliefs on death are limited. In deciphering the different beliefs on death associated with each religion, it is important to understand the different belief systems and their origins. While some religions merged the views of the other religions, some came from the views of an originating founder. Each religion has their own view on life after death and whether or not their followers should be concerned
In the novel Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, the protagonist attempts and fails several stratagems to achieve nirvana, a quality of life that is rid of desire, but ultimately finishes meeting his objective. To grasp this idea of complete bliss, Siddhartha looks inside of his Atman, or his soul, to find the key to his enlightenment. Starting off, he is motivated by the role religion has in his life as well as a close companion,Govinda, but he undergoes many changes, mentally and bodily, throughout his journey. After becoming an ascetic as well as acquiring riches, Siddhartha succeeds conclusively by allowing himself to see the world as complete.
Hindus believe that when a soul expires, it acquires rebirth in a new body. This cycle is called samsara. To be set free from the endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth one must discover their true nature in order to be with the Brahman in Nirvana. In figure G a picture of a Cambodian statue of the A.D. 900 of Brahma meditating is presented. Nirvana is a state where pain, worry and the outer world do not exist. When a person in Hindu religion has bad Karma, they must take rebirth multiple times. The sacred source of all existence is divided among three gods. Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the preserver, and Shiva is the destroyer. All three contribute to a person’s life and death and afterlife. In figure H a picture of a Vishnu sculpture is shown, and in figure I a picture of a sculpture of Shiva is
“And if death is the absence of sensation,..., it will be a wonderful gain… but if death is a journey to another place…(Doc 2). Death could be described as two things, which is that death is when you lose all sensation or feeling, or it might be the migration of your soul to another place. This explains how they have different believe in the afterlife. From the section of the Hindu epic poem the Mahabharata, It explain that sometimes life comes to an end, which we call it death. All creature will experience death through their life time.
Death has a great impact on people's lives in such a way that they learn to value life or even live it to the fullest. But what happens to us after we die? Many religions have answered this question for us according to their faiths. Buddhism is a religion where Buddhists believe in the concept of death and reincarnation or rebirth. On the other hand, Christians believe that after you die you go into a period of dormancy and until the second coming of Jesus will you be woken up and decided your fate whether you go to heaven or hell according to how you have lived your life. Christianity teaches salvation from sin through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Through Him, the gift of eternal life is also attained.
Christians, for example, believe that souls that have lived by the words of their God will exist eternally in heaven as divine beings themselves. This conception of an afterlife is generally what we people who are residents of the Unitied States hold to be true. For American culture has its roots in Europe and European culture was and is still influenced by Christian faiths. Similar to Christianity, the Hinduism also eases the fear of death by presenting a life after death. Disimilarities present themselves in the two faiths concerning exactly what kind of afterlife is lived. Believers of the Hindu faith expect to be reincarnated after their demise, either as an animal or human being depending on the manner in which their lives were carried out.
Nirvana is a word that is commonly used in Buddhism with varied meanings depending on the use. It means the state of blowing out from certain detractors in life. To “blow out” has great meaning and refers wholly to the extinguishing or dispelling of oneself from certain characters that are considered to be iniquitous. It is characterized by peace of mind and it saves man from the sufferings, the cycles of rebirth, and death. Nirvana could only be achieved by individuals who observed the laid down rules and detached themselves from sin. Moksha is a common belief in the Hindu religion and it describes a state where one’s soul connects with god’s soul. In the Hindu religion, achieving moksha removes one from the cycle of life and death, which is the state of reincarnation as one moves from one life to the next. In essence, moksha is a state of unification of one’s soul with that of the creator, therefore achieving oneness of atman and Brahman. This essay discusses the various similarities and differences that exist between Buddhist Nirvana and Hindu Moksha.
What is going to happen to us when we will die? Some people never considered what it could happen to them after life. For many people, death is a redoubtable event because they do not know what to expect after their death. However, other persons, such as religious people are conscious of what to expect after their death because of their beliefs. Each religion has different ideas and different ways of looking life. Death, therefore, is viewed by different religions in many ways. Although, different religions have a distinct conception of death, they all have something in common: they all give hope to people. Among all different religions in the world, four of the most common ones - Catholic, Jewish, Islamic, and Hindu- view death in different ways.
...n the supernatural realm when our physical body dies. I believe what the Bible says regarding life after death, which there is. I believe this through scriptures as well as teachings through church and family members. People who are not Christians can look around at philosophical teaching, which do not completely deny the fact that the spiritual realm exists and people live on after death. Philosophically life after death is hard to prove since this belief is strictly based on faith and not rational or empirical knowledge. We have a choice how we live our lives due to our free will. We are responsible for our actions during our life since we based them on fulfilling desires. The bible says, “Don’t be misled¬–you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant” . This is a basic characteristic of life, everything we do we have a result for it.
I thought that, like many other religions, there was a desirable and undesirable place to go to after death. Hindus do not believe in a heaven or hell. They believe in rebirth and this happens depending on their karma. Karma is the computation of a person’s actions. An individual’s karma will decide on what they will be reincarnated as in their next life. Their goal in life is to become one with Brhaman and this happens when there is no more karma. There is no more rebirth and karma has equalized, meaning it has balanced. The person is immersed into Brahma and they are forever with the ultimate. An example of this is how a river flows into an ocean. This stage is called Moksha and that is the ultimate
