For over fifty years, Nike has been one of the best-known and most respected footwear companies of all time, specializing in sports and running shoes. But, like most companies, they started small.
In 1964, Nike was founded by track-and-field athlete Phillip Knight, looking for a way to earn a living. The business, originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports, got their start selling Tiger running shoes, imported from the Onitsuka company in Japan. They made most of their sales out of their car after track meets. He was soon joined in this venture by his track coach, Bill Bowerman, who was looking for higher quality track shoes for his athletes.
The Tigers sold quickly, and the company burgeoned, soon hiring full-time employees and opening their first location. By 1971, Blue Ribbon Sports had made over a million dollars, and was ready to move out on its own. Their first original shoe was dubbed the Nike, named after the Greek goddess of victory. It was also the first to feature Nike's famous trademark "swoosh," designed by Carolyn Davidson. Interestingly enough, Knight didn't originally care for the symbol, saying, "I don't love it, but it will grow on me."

Bowerman was born in Portland, Oregon in 1911. He went to the University of Oregon where he studied physical education, wrote a best seller about running, and from 1949 to 1972, coached his alma mater into becoming a top-tier school for track and field. Bowerman was known for always demanding the highest effort from his athletes; he would demand the athletes to run three times a day. The Oregon coach always tried to be at the cutting edge of technology by designing better track surfaces, improved training, and, most importantly, developed the obsession for lightweight, high quality running shoes. Because of his constant desire to have the best shoe out there, he was able to innovate the running shoe industry, which had still relied on designs from fifty years ago, and developed the Waffle Racer, on which all running shoes are still based on. Yet as innovative as the shoe was, had Nike not had his former steeplechaser, Phil Knight, marketing the shoe, none of this would have mattered and casual runners today most likely would be still wearing canvas shoes.
Mega brands like Nike have been described as mediums for of globalization and technology for years. Nike being a flexible brand, elevated to the next level. The end results for Nike was innovating ad campaigns, superstars like basketball legend Michael Jordan, expansion of mega stores such as Nike Town, and Nike World campus. The Nike swoosh is meanwhile believed to be the most recognizable brand icon or corporate logo, conveying "Nike" without the need of words. After one year of active duty in the Army, Knight went to Stanford Graduate School of Business. There, that’s when he knew that he wanted to become an entrepreneur and in 1962 graduated with a master’s degree in business administration from the school. After graduating, he went to Japan where he discovered a brand of running shoes. He talked to the owner, Mr. Onitsuka and they made a deal where Knight had rights to sell his shoes to the western part of the United States. He had to get a job as an accountant because the shoes weren’t being sent to him for a year. On January 25, 1964, the partnership was sealed and Blue Ribbon Sports was created.
