Death is a topic that can be very unsettling to many. It can cause feelings of uncomfortableness, anxiety, or even fear. Some reasons for these reactions can be found in what we know, such as the fear of losing a loved one or coming to the realization that we can die at any moment. Another large factor why death is unsettling is also based upon what we don’t know, such as what happens after we die.
Knowing the answers of what happens after death is something to ‘die’ for. We may never know the true answer but we can speculate and create beliefs and hypotheses of what may happen. These speculations can range anywhere from there being an afterlife or to being reincarnated as another being. Speculations can also take a more pessimistic approach per se, such as the nihilistic view, in which death is the end of being and that life is meaningless. Nihilistic views can be defined as the “rejection of of all religious and moral principles”, or in philosophical terms, an “extreme skepticism maintaining that nothing in this world has a real existence” (Oxford Dictionaries).
The nihilistic view upon death is also known as the annihilationist view of death, in which we are inevitably annihilated when we die and erased from existence. This perspective is growing throughout many of the cultures

Immortalists claim that the view of immortality is a universal belief that can be innate, so it must be true. Many religions and philosophies attempt to answer the question, what happens after a person dies? Some religions, such as Christianity and Islam, believe there is an afterlife. They believe that good and moral people enter Heaven or Paradise and that bad and immoral people go to Hell. Other religions and cultures believe that death is final, and that nothing happens after a person dies. Buddhism and Hinduism have different ideas about death.
Fear of the unknown, and fear of what is to come in our lives, has generations of people wondering what will our lives be like tomorrow or the next day. Death is always there and we cannot escape it. Death is a scary thing. Our own mortality or the mortality of our loved ones scares us to the point that we sometimes cannot control how we are dealing with such a thing as the thought of death. The unknown is something human can’t wrap their heads around so like mystery humans try to figure it out, to discover it so that mankind may not be fearful of death. In doctor Macknees’ paper “Is there Life after Birth?” he examines the fears of death and how it’s related to humans fear of living. The three topics being fear of what happens after death, fears related to the process of dying, and fears of the loss of life. Each topic has 3 subtopics that go deeper into the thoughts that many may have as death approaches them or fears for the future. The three that connected the most to me would be under the topic of fears related to loss of life, subtopics fear of mastery, fear of incompleteness or failure, and fear of separation. In my last paragraph about death I will go deeper into my thoughts behind these and their relation to my fears of life as described by Charles Macknee. For instance, if someone has a natural talent for music one may refer to the person as being once a talented musician in a past life. A religion which describes death as a continuation of existance is held by the Crow tribe of middle America. They viewed death as a journey with the final destination as a place where all their anscestors have gone before them.
The “What If?” About Death The subject of death still proves to be under considerable debate. It is no secret that persons fear the unknown: asking yourself a question as simple as “What if?” can stimulate anxiety or panic.
Death is the one great certainty in life. Some of us will die in ways out of our control, and most of us will be unaware of the moment of death itself. Understanding that people differ in how they think about death and dying, and respecting those differences, can promote a peaceful death and a healthy manner of dying.
I was very excited to take Death and Dying as a college level course. Firstly, because I have always had a huge interest in death, but it coincides with a fear surrounding it. I love the opportunity to write this paper because I can delve into my own experiences and beliefs around death and dying and perhaps really establish a clear personal perspective and how I can relate to others in a professional setting.
