Insight into Hemingway’s Use of Racial Constructs Hemingway’s simple, straightforward writing style in “The Nick Adams Stories” does not leave much room for interpretation of the text. The reader must analyze the individual characters to gain a deeper understanding of their beliefs, background, and racial tendencies. Nick Adams, for example, seems to be very discriminatory towards American Indians and the black male he encounters throughout this collection of stories. Hemingway uses the character of Nick Adams to exemplify the racial stereotypes during his time period through Nick’s interactions with African Americans and American Indians. Although critics argue that Hemingway was the epitome of white male oppression, he uses racial constructs to highlight prejudiced differences found within the 1920s and the 1930s. Hemingway uses irony and racial stereotypes to help dissipate claims that people of color need to be held at a lesser standard than whites. In the book Into the Wild Krakauer presents McCandless as modest and caring person whereas other may see him as thoughtless.
Throughout the entire novel it is clearly portrayed that Nick Carraway is not a moral character by any stretch of the imagination. Nick Carraway may seem to have some good values, but he is in fact immoral for many reasons. First, Nick uses Jordan Baker; he never actually became interested in a serious relationship with the golf star. Miss Baker is basically just a fling to him. Secondly, Nick Carraway always seems to be the middleman in all the trouble that is going on in the novel. The narrator knows about all the lying, deceiving, two-faced things that are going on throughout the story, and he is completely ok with it. Also Nick defends Gatsby even though he very well knows of all Gatsby's criminal activity and liquor smuggling. Finally, Nick is the character who sets up two of the main characters, Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby, to have an affair. It never crosses Nick's mind that it is an immoral thing to set up an affair. During the novel there is a discussion between Gatsby and Nick about when to set up the secret meeting with Daisy. During this exchange Nick actually says, "I'm going to call up Daisy tomorrow and invite her over here to tea.
First, throughout the novel Nick is constantly judging others. In the beginning paragraphs he mentions a lesson his father once taught him. “In consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores” (1). Nick is proud of the fact that he listens to others because of his ability to reserve his judgments, but in this same line he still calls them “bores.” This is shown, constantly throughout the novel. At the very beginning Nick states, “In consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all judgements” (Fitzgerald 1). This is a complete lie, he tells the reader that he does not judge, but when Gatsby dies he criticizes Tom and Daisy for being the villains of the story. When he meets up with Tom at the very end, he says, “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money” (Fitzgerald 179). This is another example of him being biased towards certain characters. The worst part of it all is that after he says that he is reserving all judgment, he judges, “Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction-Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn” (Fitzgerald 2). He is calling out Daisy and Tom but praises Gatsby instead. Another excellent example of Nick judging characters is found when he meets Wilson and goes to that little party. He describes Wilson as, “a blond, spiritless man” (Fitzgerald 25). Nick also judges Mr. McKee as being, “a pale, feminine man” (Fitzgerald 30). Nick is being rude and judgmental towards these minor characters, even though he said he does not judge. Nick is also the type of narrator that does not tell you everything. When Nick goes to Tom’s apartment and has a party, there is a moment towards the end where they are ellipsis and then it immediately jumps to another scene, “Beauty and the Beast…Loneliness…Old Grocery Horse…Brook’n Bridge…Then I was lying half asleep in the cold lower…” (Fitzgerald 38). To begin with, after the party from the city returns to Tom’s home, Jordan invites him inside, but he responds, “‘No, thanks…’ I’d be damned if I’s go in; I’d had enough of all of them for one day, and suddenly that included Jordan too” (142). By refusing to enter Tom’s house, he symbolically declines the acceptance of the upper class; something he, Gatsby, and Myrtle all avidly desired and worked towards up to this point. Rather than value those material characteristics that had appealed to him before, he chooses his moral principles instead. His relationship with Jordan perfectly symbolizes his primary choice . Later on, after Gatsby’s death, Nick “found himself on Gatsby’s side, and alone…it grew upon me that I was responsible [for Gatsby’s funeral], because… [Gatsby deserved] that intense personal interest to which every one has some vague right at the end” (164). Once again, Nick favors his personal beliefs over following societal expectations. He stands by the mysterious figure of Gatsby, who possessed “an extraordinary gift for hope”(2) that Nick admired, while everyone else keeps a safe distance and watches, as onlookers in a zoo does to the animals. By admitting his part in the events that took place, primarily Gatsby’s downfall, Nick shows he is not the same careless person as Tom and Daisy who leave their mistakes for others to fix . Whether Nick’s belief that everyone should have a living person stand by h im/her after death is a universal truth or not, he follows his heart rather than the crowd. Finally, before he leaves to the Midwest, Nick “wanted to leave things in order and not just trust that obliging and indifferent sea to sweep my refuse away” (177). Allowing the reader to view both the positives and negatives in an author. Ernest Hemingway was one of these influential authors. Suffering through most of his life due to a disturbingly scarring childhood, he expresses his intense mental and emotional insecurities through subtle metaphors that bluntly show problems with commitment to women and proving his masculinity to others.
