“Saving the Children” shows Nicholas Winton was a brave individual during the Holocaust who risked his life to save people in danger. He saved children who lived in Czechoslovakia because nobody was going to help them. He set up rescue missions to save children and make sure they weren’t taken by German forces; thanks to the help from the British government. According to the text, "Once Winton returned to Britain, Winton worked assiduously to arrange a transport for the children.. He arranged trains from Prague to the Netherlands, ferries to take the children across the North Sea..."(1) This shows how he used trains and planes to take the children to a save zone; in fact the lines of parents begged him to save their children. to Winton those children who were saved will be able to escape Winton would be viewed as a very important hero. He risked his own life to save others during a very harsh and deadly time in history. This took bravery and courage. According to the article, "In February 1988...The most poignant moment of the show, when the host asked, ‘Is there anyone in our audience tonight who owes [his or her] life to Nicholas Winton?’ Came as a shock to the war hero. All around Winton, more than 30 men and women rose to their feet, and Winton stood to acknowledge them, wiping tears from his eyes."(1) Now, this shows that people in the stands were ones that Winton saved, without him they might be dead right now. In the end, Winton risked his life and disobeyed the law to help people live, he would unquestionably be perceived as a hero.

A true war story blurs the line between fact and fiction, where it is neither true nor false at the same time. What is true and what is not depends on how much you believe it to be. In the chapter “How to Tell a True War Story” from the novel “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, the author provides various definitions to how the validity of a war story can be judged. The entire chapter is a collection of definitions that describe the various truths to what a true war story is. Unlike O’Brien, who is a novelist and storyteller, David Finkel, the author of “The Good Soldiers”, is a journalist whose job is to report the facts. Yet in the selection that we read, chapter nine, Finkel uses the convention of storytelling, which relies heavily on the stories the combat troops tell each other or him personally. Finkel attempts to give an unbiased view of the Iraq war through the stories of the soldiers but in doing so, Finkel forfeits the use of his own experiences and his own opinions. From O’Brien’s views on what a true war story is combined with my own definitions, I believe that Finkel provides a certain truth to his war stories but not the entire truth.
A Lucky Child by Thomas Buergenthal is a memoir about his time as a Jewish child in multiple ghettos and death camps in and around Germany during World War II. The author shares about his reunions with family and acquaintances from the war in the years between then and now. Buergenthal wished to share his Holocaust story for a number of reasons: to prevent himself from just being another number, to contribute to history, to show the power and necessity of forgiveness, the will to not give up, and to question how people change in war allowing them to do unspeakable things. The memoir is not a cry for private attention, but a call to break the cycle of hatred and violence to end mass crimes.
Silver Linings Playbooks tells the story of Pat Solitano Jr. (played by Bradley Cooper), a high school teacher diagnosed with bipolar disorder who is trying to get his life back together. Empathy has been the subject of scrutiny for many philosophers and writers throughout the years. Harriet Beecher Stowe was one of these speculators and ended up writing an entire story to portray her understanding of what empathy is. She writes in Uncle Tom’s Cabin that if we were all to simply do what makes us feel right and feel strong about it, then we will naturally become more empathetic and thereby a benefactor of the human race. This notion, however, has been contested by many and Leslie Jamison is no exception. In The Empathy Exams, Jamison argues that to be empathetic requires more than a general feeling of rightness; it requires wisdom and energy.
Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain is her own story that she wrote about during the Great War otherwise known as World War One. The main theme of her story is the struggles that she had to face, whether it dealt with her family, or her personal goals such as attending college or the world that she was surrounded by. On page 17 Brittain stated that "When the Great War broke out, it came to me not as a superlative tragedy, but as an interruption of the most exasperating kind to my personal plans." Another important aspect of Vera's goals was the aspiration and ambition that she had, that aspiration allowed her to move forward in her life.
It is often common to have an author or the writer of a certain poem write about similar topics and also reflect the same stylistic characters among his or her poems. In Peter Meinke’s two poems, titled Untitled and Advice to my son, he created them both using a specific tone and the same subject to create different themes. Both of these poems also included some of the important elements of poetry.
Dave has experienced a truly extraordinary life. As a child, he endured the horrors of child abuse, which included physical torture, mental cruelty, and near starvation. Whether one would like to admit it or not, change is a difficult and not to mention uncomfortable experience which we all must endure at one point in our lives. A concept that everyone must understand is that change does not occur immediately, for it happens overtime. It is necessary for time to pass in order for a change to occur, be it days, weeks, months, or even years. The main character, who is also the narrator of “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves”, realizing that “things felt less foreign in the dark” (Russell 225), knows that she will be subject to change very soon. The author makes it evident to readers that the narrator is in a brand new environment as the story begins. This strange short story about girls raised by wolves being trained by nuns to be more human in character is a symbol for immigration, as the girls are forced to make major changes in their lives in order to fit in with their new environment and adapt to a new culture.
Truman Capote created a character in "Children on Their Birthdays" who is the definition of a dreamer. Her name is Miss Bobbit and although she is only a child, everyone who knew her addressed her as Miss Bobbit because "she had a certain magic, whatever she did she did it with completeness, and so directly , so solemnly, that there was nothing to do but accept it". When she introduced herself as Miss Bobbit people would "snicker", yet she was still known as Miss Bobbit.
‘Educating Rita’ explores the way in which a woman, in her late twenties, Rita, has to deal with everyday life, conflict change and different phases as she becomes educated. The play is based on Willy Russell’s own life. At the start of the play, Frank is a more relaxed character. Rita is a hyper and open minded character, searching for adventure. She comes from the working class society and tries to become educated and well respected. Frank on the other hand is from the upper-class society, well educated but has lost most of his respect through drinking. As the play progresses Frank starts to show a romantic and affectionate side of himself towards Rita, she starts to move away from Frank as she makes new friends and as she becomes more educated, creating a sense of jealousness in Frank.

Although there were many specifications, including an age limit of seventeen, no parents or guardians allowed, and an extremely long waiting list, The Kindertransport was a key part in preserving many children’s lives. Most of the trains left from cities in Germany such as Berlin, Vienna, and Prague. These transports helped children escape their homes that had been taken over by Nazis. Few trains left from other German controlled places such as Austria and the Czech. Children traveled great distances in hopes of getting on a transport, many traveling from villages and small towns. The trains from these cities brought the children to ports both in the Netherlands and in Belgium where the children then went by boat to Harwich, Great Britain.
