Physics is involved in everyday life and can be an essential explanation for how things work. Being a lacrosse goalie involves physics concepts and proves how they apply to every movement that is made on the field. To better understand the physics of a goalie, you must understand how Newton’s Three Laws of Motion work; Inertia, force equals mass times acceleration, and equal and opposite forces, as well as another law torque and leverage.
The first law of Newton’s Laws is inertia. The basic definition of inertia is an object in motion will stay in motion until acted on by an outside force, as well as an object as rest will stay at rest until acted on by an outside force (Serwalt, R. & Faughn, J). This law applies to just about every move in the game of lacrosse. When a player picks up the ball in their stick, before they start to move, the ball is at rest, but once the player begins to move and cradle the ball, the ball is now in motion. The only way to stop the motion of the ball is if the player decides to stop moving and try to waste time. This would be called as a stall in the game, and causes a turn over. A good example of the ball staying in motion until acted on is when the goalie has the ball and begins to clear. A “clear” is when the goalie has possession of the ball and is looking for a player from the team to pass to, to get the ball out of the defensive zone into the other teams defensive zone (NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rule Book, 2014) . When the goalie clears the ball it has to be a long pass. A good goalie can clear the ball the length of half of a football field, and if the pass is to high to the teammate to catch then the ball will be acted on by the force of gravity and the ground which causes the ball the ...

...ase (the player shooting the ball), and you have to motion of the projectile (the way the player shoots). The importance about the motion of the stick when the player shoots is to make sure that with their most dominant hand, the one that’s highest on the stick, is pushing forward and with their bottom hand they are pulling back towards their ribcage and armpit area. When watching this motion from the side you can clearly see the lever arm being put into action on the field.
Men’s lacrosse, as a goalie, and physics are tied together in many ways. You can explain the effectiveness of a pass, all the way down to picking up the ball from the ground. The main topics that explain the game of lacrosse are all three of Newton’s Laws of Motion; Inertia, Force equals mass times acceleration, and equal and opposite forces, and another law that applies, torque and leverage.
In lacrosse, the overhead shot is the most vital part of the game and the most important skill that an offensive player can have. The goal of the lacrosse shot is to create a scoring attempt with peak speed and accuracy. Each player is different regarding personal technique; however, the basis of each shot remains the same and are interpreted through six phases. The general purpose of this paper is to describe trunk rotation and its impact on power and accuracy which will maximize the potential of a lacrosse shot.
Lacrosse was once a sport played with as many as 100,000 players on in the valley at the same time. It has now decreased to ten players for men and twelve for women’s lacrosse. The positions are attackers, midfielders, and defenders. My group’s primary focus is the midfielder. The midfielder can be considered the center piece of the team. While playing both offense and defense the midfielder displays that he has to be in the better shape than his teammates. He also has a key role in the most important part of the game “Transitioning” (2). That stage requires a lot of clearing the ball and saving a lot of loose balls which is why the midfielder needs to be explosive and in shape.
When one throws a baseball properly they are using there entire body to generate a large force to propel the baseball. A general throwing position starts with a person rotated 90 degrees from there target with there throwing arm 180 degrees from the target and parallel to the ground. The person then starts rotating their body back towards their target while there throwing arm starts bending until it is almost 90 degrees to their elbow, while the arm is bending at the elbow the throwing arm is rotating such that the arm rotates back almost 180 degrees from the target. Meanwhile the person is leaping forward with the leg that was initially pointed at the target while there other leg is planted into the ground. The person is bending at their waist and the other arm is rotating into their body. Around the point where the driving leg strikes the ground the throwing arm is rotating foreword at a tremendous angular speed and the person lets go of the ball. At the point where the ball is let go the persons body pulls the planted leg forward and the throwing arm finishes its motion towards the driving leg.
Both Lacrosse and Ice hockey are two sports that share similar aspects. One example would be that they both require plenty of athletic prowess, as well as countless hours of training and practice to master. The high amount of contact in both sports enables a player to become both physically and mentally “tough”. Lacrosse has grown to its highest level of popularity it has ever reached over the last ten years. Ice hockey has seen a steady climb in its popularity over the past 25 years making it one of the most popular sports in not only Long Island, but all across the U.S. However, there are many differences as well, and we should not overlook the fact that there are plenty of distinctions between the two great sports. Many of which are the main reasons that these are obviously two separate sports.
A baseball pitcher throws a baseball across the plate and the batter hits it to center field, and elderly man pitches horseshoes, a young person spikes a volleyball, student practices driving a golf ball while a college athlete practices punting a football. Once more, as is the case with pushing and pulling, a widely diverse set of activities has a common denominator. Each of these activities involves sequential movement of the body segments resulting in the production of a summated velocity at the end of the chain of segments used. The path produced by the end point of this chain of segments is curvilinear in nature. Sequential segmental motions are most frequently used to produce high velocities in external objects. Depending on the objective of the skill, speed, accuracy, distance, or some combination, modifications in the sequential pattern may be involved, larger or smaller ranges of motion might be used, and longer of shorter lever lengths may be chosen. Regardless of the modifications, the basic nature of the sequential throwing, striking or kicking pattern remains the same.
Participation in sports and games has long been a part of Native culture. The most significant example of a sport invented and played by Natives is lacrosse. Lacrosse is still designated as the official sport of Canada despite the overwhelming popularity of hockey (http://canada.gc.ca). Lacrosse was one of many varieties of indigenous stickball games being played by Native Americans and Canadians at the time of European contact. Almost exclusively a male team sport, it is distinguished from other stick and ball games, such as field hockey or shinny, by the use of a netted racquet with which to pick the ball off the ground, throw, catch and vault it into or past a goal to score a point.
The lacrosse players would go up to each other and smack at each other’s sticks trying to dislodge the ball. The French named the game lacrosse which means the game of the stick. Sometimes a player would hit an opposing team’s player, severely injuring the person or breaking bones. There is even one account of a player dying. Anthony Aveni an editor for History.org says, “It is quite common to see someone crippled for the rest of his life who would not have had this misfortune but for his own obstinacy” (paragraph 9). The Indians did not have a goal so they used landmarks such as rocks and trees for a goal. Jane Claydon, an editor for Federation of International Lacrosse claims, “Some estimates have mentioned between one hundred and one hundred thousand players…. On the field at one time” (paragraph 2). There are tons of players. The fields were very extreme ranging anywhere from nine hundred yards to nine miles in length. Players at one end could not see the ball at the other end. The game would last from sun up to sun down many

Lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America, having been played by Native American tribes long before any European had even set foot on the continent. A century after European missionaries discovered the game played by Native Americans, they began to play it themselves, starting in the 18th century. From there, it evolved and grew in popularity from a very savage game that resembled war, into what it is today, a recreational sport played widely in America and other countries. As U.S. Lacrosse literature aptly puts it, “Lacrosse is a game born of the North American Indian, christened by the French, adopted and raised by the Canadians, and later dominated by the Americans.” When the first people of America started playing lacrosse centuries ago, the game served many purposes.
The game of baseball has several elements of motion to it – throwing, catching, hitting, running – but I’ve chosen to focus on the physics involved in hitting a baseball. To a spectator, the exchange is simple: the pitcher throws the baseball, an opposing batter tries to hit the ball. Even to an athlete, the process is not one of thought, but of instinct and action. However, in actuality, the laws of physics dictate everything that will occur from the moment the baseball leaves the pitcher’s hand. Even the very familiar equipment o...
First of all, the rules of football require one to equip himself with approximately twenty pounds of equipment, including a helmet, shoulder pads, and girdle pads. This is because football has the most contact involved out of all sports. In a football game, the norm is that the home team wears colorful jerseys and the visiting team wears white jerseys. Moreover, if a team’s offense is on the field, their defense is on the sideline. A team’s offense includes a center, who snaps the ball to the quarterback. The “QB” then has a choice to run with the ball, hand it off to a running back, or throw it to a wide receiver. The quarterback has an offensive line to protect him from the assailing defense. If a teammate happens to score a touchdown, he earns his team six points, which allows for the kicker to kick an extra point, and give his team a total of seven points. However, if the offense fails to travel at least ten yards within four attempts, or “downs,” they have the opti...
Soccer and lacrosse are obviously two different sports , but in a way they are both very similar to each other. Similarly, they both use a ball for their main part of the game. They use the ball to bring it down the field and a try to score on the opposing team. Another similarity is that they both have goalkeepers to help protect the ball from not going in on the team's side. They both stand in their goal box and they are able to bring it down field if they want. In addition, they use nets on the back of the goalkeepers with bars that show how big the goal is and so the ball doesn't fly out of the field when the team scores.Another example of a similarity between soccer and lacrosse is that they both involve a lot of running. For both sports midfield is the position where you have to run
Physics is everywhere. Consequently, physics is a part of sports and more specifically, hockey. As the scientific discoveries progressed with time, so did the advancements in the sport of hockey, reflecting on how important and influential science truly is. Physics takes part in the ice, the skates, the protective gear, the shots, goaltending, and all other aspects of ice hockey.
Sir Isaac Newton is the man well known for his discoveries around the term, Motion. He came up with three basic ideas, called Newton’s three laws of motion.
Volleyball is a sport that includes many elements from physics. Next time you are playing or watching your friend or family member play volleyball think about the elements in physics involved. Without gravity, work velocity, acceleration, work, and the Newton's 3 laws of motion, volleyball wouldn’t be the same. In this paper I will explain how you can use work, velocity, gravity and acceleration along with newton's three laws of motion
