Many different categories of people contributed to Newark’s violence, including police, National Guard members, residents and outside activists. First, I think residents were forced to get involved in order for their own self protection and there was no escape. Second, I think the outside activists wanted to help make a difference all around the world and couldn't stand watching the crimes anymore. Also, I think the police got involved because of their conflicts with the blacks. Lastly, I think the national guard members got involved because the crime was out of control and they needed more help. Instead of using violence to mitigate the rage, there could’ve been negotiations made.
I would be nervous if my street was patrolled by armed soldiers.

This would make me feel nervous because I would constantly be thinking about the violence surrounding me. This would also make me feel safer because I would feel protected by these armed soldiers. I think there needed to be more organized use of force. An officer, would fire a gun and then the rest of the officers would because their was no command and they did it for self- protection. Organized force and trying to make advance would've made a big difference in the Newark Riots. Newark was a thriving city before the Newark Riots. The government believed high rises would contain people in certain areas. However, this caused many problems. This created organized crimes, gangs, and drugs. People were now in closer proximity and caused more danger. The government soon realized this and wanted to knock down people's homes. This led to more anger because people believed they were getting things taken away from them because of their race. In Newark, city officials resisted federal programs that might have helped the poor.
During dire situations, there should be a balance of power be among municipal, state, and federal government. The municipality should not have full control during events such as the Newark Riots because the riot was controversy between the people and the town. This would create an unfair balance, however the municipality needs some sort of power unless there would be complete chaos. Federal aid programs should have the right to bypass city or state government because civilians have the right to these programs and need support during these hard …show more content…
times. Attitudes and stereotypes had a major impact on the Newark riots and still impacts society today. Whites viewed blacks as “inherently dangerous” during the Newark riots. Tom Hayden explains that whites assumed that all blacks were part of gangs or mobs ever if they were peaceful and had no association with these groups. Also, Nell Painter says, “Oh, yeah, that’s just what black people do.” this is an assumption about all black people. Whites making these comments during the Newark riots only created more tension. Justice is the moral principle determining just conduct.
The people who fought in the Newark riots didn't want a riot to occur. No one did. However, they believed it was necessary to get their point across. These people wanted to be able to live the American dream. After an event like a riot, these people should be able to live the american dream. In honor of their family members who passed and the struggles they went through during this time.
If I had the power to help a community like Newark heal from a riot I would feel overwhelmed. Since people are already very tense, I would have to be careful about any decision I made. First, I would create a sense of community. This would allow everyone to feel connected to one another and a sense of unitment. I would create a program, so people could get medical help if they were injured or harmed during the riots.
Yes, I think that a riot or rebellion could happen in a major NJ city today like the one that happened in Newark. Recently, there has been many riots over racial issues all over the country such as in Baltimore. I think it more likely to happen in a NJ City because people already fought for their rights during the Newark riots and if they’re still not achieving their goal; they will still want to fight for
it. As the film suggests, many riots have quietly been forgotten. It is important to remember these events because as a society we can learn and grow from them. By reflecting on these events, the people who lost their lives are honored and never forgotten. This event happened, and was a tragedy that affected many people, so why should it be forgotten? Many lessons are lost by not remembering riots. The reasons for the Newark Riots was formed over countless decades; however, the Newark Riots are the outcome of the final straw. This riot changed the lives of many people and should be remembered. We should move forward in a positive way by reflecting on our pasts so we don't make the same mistakes and move in a positive direction.
Once called the Public Housing capital in the United States, Newark was receiving more money than any other city from the federal government to clear slums and build public housing complexes. People like Louis Danzig who was the head of the Newark Housing Authority (NHA) used the federal funds the city received to destroy low income housing of minorities in Newark, then build public housing on the outskirts of the city putting all the poor minorities in these areas. The police brutalized the cities African-American citizens numerous times with no repercussions. The city was being segregated and African-American Newark residents started to feel more and more marginalized. In 1967 things finally came to ahead as an African-American cab driver was arrested and beat badly by the Newark Police Department and when rumor spread that he had died in police custody. Though the cab driver was in fact brought to the hospital, a group gathered out in front of the police station and started throwing bricks and other objects at the police station. The riot went on for six days and has shaped the image of Newark to this day the riots have given the city a negative appearance that still lingers.
The Newark riots of 1967 were very extreme and terrible time in Newark, New Jersey, one of the worst in U.S. history. The riots were between African-Americans and white residents, police officers and the National Guard. The riots were not unexpected. The tension between the city grew tremendously during the 1960's, due to lack of employment for Blacks, inadequate housing, police brutality and political exclusion of blacks from government.
The Chicago riot was the most serious of the multiple that happened during the Progressive Era. The riot started on July 27th after a seventeen year old African American, Eugene Williams, did not know what he was doing and obliviously crossed the boundary of a city beach. Consequently, a white man on the beach began stoning him. Williams, exhausted, could not get himself out of the water and eventually drowned. The police officer at the scene refused to listen to eyewitness accounts and restrained from arresting the white man. With this in mind, African Americans attacked the police officer. As word spread of the violence, and the accounts distorted themselves, almost all areas in the city, black and white neighborhoods, became informed. By Monday morning, everyone went to work and went about their business as usual, but on their way home, African Americans were pulled from trolleys and beaten, stabbed, and shot by white “ruffians”. Whites raided the black neighborhoods and shot people from their cars randomly, as well as threw rocks at their windows. In retaliation, African Americans mounted sniper ambushes and physically fought back. Despite the call to the Illinois militia to help the Chicago police on the fourth day, the rioting did not subside until the sixth day. Even then, thirty eight
The opening scene is at the city council meeting where civilians are speaking out against police brutality and being targeted. One women even talks about facing retaliation from the police because she had reported misconduct. The Newark Police Department does not have good reputation. Being known for unreasonable force and corruption, it is finally getting acknowledged. More and more people are speaking out on the things going on in their own cities police department. This department is even being investigated because of the many accusations of abuse. Some of these accusations include random stop and frisks, stops,
Theoretically, in a Federal system the sovereignty is shared between the national government and the local government but the ultimate sovereignty lies on the people. The federal government does not have the power to be involved in the states laws as they are only able to deal with national security, taxation and foreign affairs. The States however, deal with public welfare, education and justice. For instance, in different States there are different laws in executing criminals implemented as such in California death sentence is applied. However, it differs in practice whereby in the recent events the federal government is heavily involved in the public welfare especially when it dealt with major crises.
The police saw that the area needed extra supervision and went about patrolling the area for a couple of weeks, maybe months. When they found the crimes running back up in higher numbers, they just backed out since their patrolling didn’t matter. Once the people and the neighborhood are considered run down or “broken”, they’ll always be seen as something that can’t be fixed. In addition, they’re absolutely no eyes on the streets which is exactly what Jacobs would’ve turned away from. The streets aren’t safe, no one’s looking after all neighborhood kids or the belongings that keep getting robbed or stolen consistently. There’s also nothing keeping the teens safe anymore, not even a sports team near them or just any activity to keep give them somewhere to go or look forward to. There is nothing about lower Jersey City that makes it even close to equal to upper Jersey City. From education to opportunities and every other aspect, inequality is clearly evident in Westside and
While the L.A. riots were far larger, and the effects are still being felt, I still feel that the Watts riots had more of an impact. I had known about the riots previously, as I had been interested and looked into it on my own, but I had not looked into the economic at the time. Seeing that there were not any real economic effects from the riot, and in-fact some things may have gotten even worse, changes how I think of riots reported on in the media. Although there has been little in empirical studies done on the impact of the Watts riots, which is odd due to their importance in recent American history, especially now, it is clear that the riots started a trend of misguided racial tension that continues to this day, one that has prolonged the suffering and disenfranchisement of Blacks in the United States. While I do not believe another riot is the answer, researching this riot has shown me that while the riots can be considered important, the reality is that their effects on society are quite minimal, and only the political discussion of the riots is what has lasted to today. The failure of any real reform since then of the treatment of Blacks in general, let alone in the criminal justice world, shows to me a real lack of justice in the United
The most surprising thing about this riots was that the blacks were not the ones to riot or retaliate they were cooperative and tried to protect their families, respect their employers, and maintain a civil attitude toward others. However, the white community was not so cordial. The harm caused by their immature and ridiculous outburst cost many families their livelihood. Fear is one of the strongest emotions and when left unchecked it can affect more than just one person. This event in history was just one clear demonstration of why everyone needs to step outside of their comfort zones and explore other communities and cultures. Education and love are the key to solving the racial problems that America still faces today. Stereotypes and bias cause a divide , and division stunts growth. The white community in Atlanta chose fear over logic this fact is forever scarred into their history.
The streets of Philadelphia are rapidly becoming a home to violent acts and random homicides. Innocent lives are taken every day due to the strong presence of gangs, and the streets are run by unruly groups of fearless young adults. Gang violence in Philadelphia is a major issue, and the citizens will never be safe until gang prevention occurs. Gang prevention is not a simple task, but with the right resources available, it is possible. Gang violence is a problem that will contribute to the collapse of Philadelphia, and it has yet to be solved throughout many generations. With gang violence on the rise, the best solution to gang violence is to educate the youth and parents about gangs and use family support to prevent the creation of gang members from the problem’s core.
= Gang Violence in California The City of Los Angeles is the “gang capital” of the nation. There are more than 450 active gangs in the City of Los Angeles. Many of these gangs have been in existence for over 50 years. These gangs have a combined membership of over 45,000 individuals.
I connected the article about the rise in Hip Hop in the Bronx and its relation to curbing violence to two different ideas found in the articles we read, the first being black reurbanism from Robert Fishman’s, “The fifth migration” and the second being the concept that the city of Kinshasa while being very poor, was a thriving center of arts and popular music from the Kinshasa article, I could not find the author of this article as there was many different names there. There are many similarities in these articles, one being that in the Bronx, despite the challenges it faces, it has overcome much of its violence with the use of arts such as they did in Kinshasa, all on their own. Instead of using violence, they have resorted to a much more peaceful and creative way to settle their differences, such as dance, graffiti, and fashion. Another connection is that even though the Bronx is the home of hip hop and so many ideals from mainstream pop culture originated there and should be a city of great wealth, the city is still suffering. This relates to black reurbanism in the sense that
The youth that are rioting in Baltimore are relentless. They have destroyed many local businesses and homes to many people. The structural damage caused in Baltimore is absolutely atrocious, it looks like a war zone. In the first couple of days it was reported by the Huffington Post, that there were 61 structural fires in Baltimore. That is a high amount of damage from just a couple of days. They do not understand that to repair that damage, it costs a lot of money, and that money would come from the city which comes from their own taxes. Its sad to know that they do not see their own repercussions. Riots can destroy cities and leave them unrecoverable in some cases. In the 1968 Baltimore riots, there was even more destruction with most
Civil society is a crucial component for adjusting the degenerating structures of the West. As Ferguson illustrate, the problem comes from “within it: the legislature, the regulatory agencies, and the legal system itself”. Elites inside these institutions are unable or unwilling to reform. Similar to the “violence trap” proposed by North, Weingast, and Cox, institutional change requires elite to change, but they are constrained by the state of those structures. Thus, breaking that cycle requires an outside force and in this case, the power must come from civil society. In agreement with Ferguson’s argument, citizenship goes beyond voting and following the laws, it is also about becoming part of the “wider group” of people that has the capabilities
Though the founders of the united states gave much consideration to the division of responsibility between federal and state government, many citizens today continue to debate the correct balance between federal and state government. My position is that the government powers are not well balanced. Some areas of conflict where the powers are improperly balanced are the executive and judicial branch. An area where the balance works well is in the legislative branch.
Though the rioting problem at Northeastern has not become a common weekend event, the school is taken many steps to stop the abhorrent behavior, understand the phenomenon and build a stronger community for students and area residents.
