Derek Jeter, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra: those are all names every American grows up hearing in sports history. All of those names have etched themselves in a foundation of sports that the sport of baseball is built upon. What do they all have in common? They are all New York Yankees. The New York Yankees are one of not only the United States’, but also the entire world’s most renowned and oldest sport franchises. Originally one of the eight charter teams in the AL conference, the Yankees began their franchise in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901. They were originally the Orioles, before moving to New York City and adopting the name “Highlanders” in 1903. Colonel Jacob Ruppert and Colonel Tillinghast L'Hommedieu Huston originally purchased the Yankees for $1.25 million on January 29, 1915. On May 5th, 1922, construction began on what became the first “Yankee Stadium”. The park opened on April 18, 1923, where the Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-1 in front of a crowd of over 74,000 people, and Babe Ruth hit the park’s first home run during the game. In the 1923 season, the Yankees won their first (of twenty seven total) World Series Championships. They defeated the in-town rival, New York Giants in 4-2 in a best-of-seven series. On Jan 25, 1945, “Dan Topping, Del Webb and Larry MacPhail purchase the Yankees for $2,800,000 from the estate of the late Col. Jacob Ruppert. The team became an icon and passion for New Yorkers. In 1964, the television network, CBS, bought 80% of the team for over 11 million dollars. The Yankees then decided they wanted to remodel the Yankee Stadium, so they began playing at Shea Stadium while a two-year project to remodel was underway. In 1976 the new renovated Yankee Stadium opened with a Yankees win over the Twins. The very next season they would return as World Series champions. The 80s were filled with manager changes and some of the first era of Yankees players sadly passing away. In 1996 the championship yet again returned to the Yankees where they would go on to win three out of four years. In 2008 Yankee Stadium came to an end, with a brand new, state-of-the-art stadium to be built and open in 2009 was underway. The “new” Yankees Stadium is one of the nicest stadiums in all of professional sports today. The Yankees’ last title came in 2009, after a nine-year drought, putting them at 27 total.
