Case Study: New York Giants and New York Jets
This case study will examine the New York Giants and the New York Jets and how they compete with each other in the New York City area. I will look into the Giants relevant history, statistics on the greater New York City area, what challenges the Giants face to beat out their competition, and other various factors. This will be a difficult case study, because neither team has had dominating seasons as of late, and there are many fans that could be “fair whether fans” and they will only watch their team when they are being successful.
History of the Giants
The New York Giants are one of the oldest football teams in the National Football League’s (NFL) history. The NFL was founded in 1922 and the Giants joined the league shortly after it started, in 1925(Citation). The team was bought by Tim Mara, only four years after another team in New York failed, for only $500 (Citation). The Giants were a huge part of what kept the NFL alive, because the NFL needed a big market team(Citation). The Giants proved to be just what the NFL needed and this was proved when they played the Chicago Bears in New York(Citation). The two teams played two games against each other, winning game each, but the most important factor was the 70,000 fans that came

to watch these games (Citation). This does not sound like a huge number since we now see stadiums that seat 100,000 people, but this was back in 1925! The Giants had success early, winning their first NFL Championship in 1927 (Citation). The Giants have three other NFL Championships, in 1934, 1938 and 1956, along with four Super Bowl wins, in 1986, 1990, 2007 and 2011 (Citation). This puts the Giants 3rd on the list for most NFL Championships only behind the Green Bay Packers, 13, and the Chicago Bears,9 (Citation). This includes championships won before the creation of the Super Bowl and the Super Bowl wins. Demographics and Stadium Capacity New York has a massive population of 8,491,079 which is just minutes away from Metlife Stadium, where the Giants host their home games (Citation). Metlife Stadium is actually in East Rutherford, New Jersey. New York City’s population has increased 3.9% in just four years and the median household income is $52,259 (Citation). This population gives the Giants the biggest market out of any other football team in the NFL (Citation). The New York Giants have a rich history and they have also won several Super Bowls in recent history which brings in many diehard fans.
The Giants play their home games at Metlife Stadium, which seats 82,500 fans (Citation). The Giants first game in Metlife stadium did not sell out, which made many wonder if the Giants maybe overpriced their tickets or overestimated the New York market (Citation). Many of the seats that did not sell were club seats which cost up to $550 a game. Giants co-owner, John Mara, said “But we had over 77,000 people on a rainy day” (Citation). This statement proves that the Giants organization is not worried at all about sell out games in the
future. Competitor With the New York Giants to New York Jets comparison there will not be and conflict with both teams playing at the same time at home, because both teams play their home games at Metlife Stadium. However, there will be fans that grew up Jets fans and therefore the Giants will most likely not be selling many tickets to Jets fans. I believe the Giants have an absolute advantage over the Jets. Absolute Advantage by definition is when a person, organization or country is more efficient at that activity than another person, organization or country(Citation). The absolute advantage that the Giants have over the Jets is the fact that they have 8 NFL Championships compared to the Jets one Championship(Citation). Looking into the comparative advantage, which is when a person, organization or country has an opportunity cost of an activity that is lower than it is for another person, organization or country (Citation). I believe many fans would rather watch the Giants because they have big names on their team such as Odell Beckham Jr, Eli Manning, and Jason Pierre Paul. All of these players are extremely exciting to watch. The Jets, on the other hand, have a mediocre quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brandon Marshall at wide receiver. They also do not have many big name or exciting players to watch on defense. When it comes to opportunity cost, which is the value of the best forgone alternative, if a fan would choose to go to a Jets game over a Giants game they could save some money(Citation). In 2012 the Jets had a much cheaper average ticket price for their home opener, at $194, compared to the Giants home opener the average ticket price was $280 (Citation). Demand and Local Competitor's Strategy Consumer income, number of consumers in the market, consumer expectations, consumer tastes, price of substitutes and price of complements will all affect the demand for Giants tickets. Consumer tastes could be one of the biggest ones that affects the sale of Giants tickets. With so much to do in New York the Giants could lose ticket sales towards the end of baseball season to the New York Mets or the New York Yankees because a fan may like baseball more than they like football. The same thing could happen when basketball season comes around, this time losing ticket sales to the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks. The New York Jets strategy to attract more fans to their games is simple, they have much lower ticket prices than the Giants do. As I said early the Giants average ticket price for the home opener was $280 compared to the Jets $194 (Citation). Also it was as cheap as $65 to get into the Jets home opener compared to the Giants $213 (Citation). Obviously ticket prices change from game to game, but it seems as if the Jets are trying to gain an advantage on the Giants by simply selling their tickets at a cheaper price. Conclusion The New York Giants and the New York Jets both have had mediocre seasons as of late, but they both look like they are turning the corner to become better teams. They both must fight each other for fans since they both play at Metlife Stadium, but they obviously cannot play at the same time. It comes down to who would the fan rather see play, a team that they grew up cheer for or possibly the game that would give them a better “bang for their buck.” Both teams are doing quite well and have been able to increase the number of tickets they have because they built a new stadium a couple of years ago.
“The Green Bay Packers are a non-profit corporation held by the citizens of Green Bay to run it’s football team”,who I think are the best, arguably are the most storied franchise in the National Football League, were organized on Aug,11, 1919, in the dingy second-floor editorial rooms of the old Green Bay Press-Gazette building, located on Cherry Street in downtown Green Bay. Never imagining what might become of the semipro football team being formed that day, nobody documented who was there or how many were on hand. There had been no announcement of the meeting beforehand, and the Press-Gazette provided no details about it the day after.Whether a full complement of players attended or if it was simply a
The New York Yankees lost to St. Louis in the 1926 World Series and came out in 1927 for revenge. (Geisler, 1) The Yankees opened the season on April 12th with an 8-3 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics and they never looked back. (Frommer, 5) The Yankees never fell out of first place after that first day and finished 19 games ahead of Philadelphia who won 91 games respectively. (New York Yankees, 3) An astonishing feat for today's strategic baseball moves, the '27 Yankees went all year without a single roster move. (Geisler, 1) With a tremendous team built by owner, Jacob Ruppert and General Manager, Ed Barrow, the scene was set for a big year. Certainly meeting the New York standards with a record of 110 wins and 44 losses the Yankees had many indiv...
In 1971, the Chicago Bears began to play in Soldier Field. The founder of the Chicago Bears, George Halas, never thought Soldier Field would be the permanent field for the Bears. Later in the 1970’s, George Halas announced the team would look into building a stadium in Arlington Heights. “Chicago Mayor Richard Daley stated the team would need to change their name to the ‘Arlington Heights Bears,’ should they move to the suburbs” (Roy Taylor). George Halas was a business man and if the Chicago Bears were...
Football is something as American as apple pie. It is thought of as gritty, physical, and all around fun just as most Americans like to be thought of. For decades the NFL has dominated the world of football. However, Vince McMahon, the founder of the WWF, has introduced a new and controversial professional football league called the XFL. Much of the controversy is about whether the XFL is a force to be reckoned with or just another of McMahon’s clever marketing ploys. Although the XFL’s survival has been questioned by many, it promises to be a league full of the smash-mouth, trash-talking, fan-oriented football every fan deserves.
players around the NFL. The number of athletes that protested would increase from a couple on each team to nearly all of them. With the only exception being, the Dallas Cowboys. Who as a team took a knee prior to the anthem, but would all stand during it. This was due to the owner Jerry Jones why has said that no player will sit or take a knee on his team or he would cut them, but more on that later. Then there was one other person that would not join his team in protest. That person was Pittsburgh Steelers player Alejandro Villanueva. Who is a former United States Army Ranger.
It all started in 1946 when the San Francisco 49ers first began their franchise. In 1950 is when the moved to the National Football League. They earned their name from the gold miners who surged in San Francisco, in 1849, in search for gold so they could start a new life. Their first owner, Anthony J. Morabito, who was from the University of Santa Clara alumnus, had a dream of bringing a football team to the west. He had been moderately successful in the lumber hauling business. To make this happen, Anthony was put in touch with Arch Ward, an editor of the Chicago Tribune. Mr. Ward is credited with the All-American Conference, which was first held in October 1944. Anthony, after a long talk and negotiating with Mr. Ward, was granted a franchise with help from his younger brother, Victor, and partners in his lumbering business, Allen E. Sorrell, and E. J. Turre (“Niner’s history” www.49ersparadise.com).
My family and I are big Giants fans, and one time, we were at a Giants game. At this Giants game, they were losing to the Redskins almost the entire game. At the end, the Giants were losing by six points, with about 5 seconds left to
Despite a dominant 40-10 win against the San Fransisco 49ers, it is not all good news for the Dallas Cowboys looking back on Sunday evening’s showing. The Dallas Cowboy’s lost All-Pro kicker, Dan Bailey, mid game, due to a groin strain in his kicking leg. It was announced this morning that Bailey could be out for several weeks while recovering.
NFL teams are practicing lightly so far this year, training camp is multiple weeks away, and the first preseason game isn't going to be played for months. The new defense has not been completely installed yet and neither has the new offense. We do not know whether the special teams unit will be as effective as it has been the past several seasons because Chip Kelly's practice schedule is no longer in place to provide extra reps and the overall depth chart isn't even being considered at this point because players are currently sporting shorts and t-shirts on the field.
Everyone feels the need to belong. Some people find the answer to fulfill that need in sports. In the United States, the go-to sport is football. Following one’s hometown team or childhood NFL team through the regular season, playoffs, and hopefully, the Super Bowl has become a staple for today’s culture. Whether or not their favorite team makes it to the big Super Bowl game, they still find themselves cheering on one of the teams competing. T...
I stood at the front gate of Fenway park, home of the Boston Red Sox, where the Green Monster stands tall, the year of 2013. As soon as I walked in through the front gate, the warm smell of hot buttery popcorn made my mouth water with comfort. This familiar smell brought me back to the times I went to baseball games with my Dad and grandfather. The spots of spilled soda stains stick and sizzle on the cold hard concrete floors surrounding the stadium. The steam of a freshly boiled hot dog fills my nostrils with delight. A few moments later the umpire had a scratchy voice that emitted through the stadium and announced, “Play Ball”. Then the fans all seated waiting for the game to begin. After a few minutes the 1st inning began and one of the most
The New York Yankees are arguably the most storied and well-recognized sports organization in the world. “...they are perhaps the epitome of a large market baseball team (Emanuele, 2010). Their tremendous wealth, power, and influence is reflected by a fan base and awe that stretches world-wide. In the movie “Facing the Giants”, Grant Taylor is the head coach of the Eagles football team. Throughout the movie Grant is constantly tested and put through hard times with his work, family, and faith. At work his team is never winning a game, even though they practice all the time and try their best to win. His position as head coach is being questioned on whether or not he is fit to run a football team and whether or not he can bring the team to state this year. At home him and his wife have been trying to start a family for a couple years with no luck. Everything in their house is breaking down, there is a disgusting smell coming from an unknown source, and his car never works anymore. Between the troubles at home and at work, he finds that his faith is constantly being tested and has even started to lose his faith in God. When he has finally hit rock bottom, he finds hope and faith in reading the bible and trusting in God. Grant develops a new coaching plan to inspire his players to believe in God and trust that he will help them through as long as they believe in themselves and God’s plan. They praise him in success and failure, and eventually win the state championship with the help of God’s grace. Grant gets a raise in his salary, he receives a new truck as a present, and his wife becomes pregnant. Grant realizes that his faith in God has given these amazing things in his life.
