Recommended: Importance of attitude

Nearly eleven schools, twelve cities, two countries and three different education systems: yes, this is a short summary of the seventeen years of my life.

My father is a fighter pilot with the Indian Air Force. My mother, a strong lady. I have breathed every breath of my life in a defense forces atmosphere, and no other kind of life could ever substitute for the discipline and grooming which is credited to only a defense forces life, and which fortunately has been inculcated in me.

I have never lived in the same place for more than two years at a time, and sometimes have shifted to different towns in the course of one year. I have lived in the largest of the cities like Mumbai, India and Tel Aviv, Israel and also, in the remotest of towns which are not even marked on maps. Having studied in many schools, having lived in two countries (India & Israel), and having functioned in three different educational systems, has doubtlessly been the biggest impacting factor in my life. This has rooted in me two very important characteristics – adaptability and sustainability. After 17 years of this kind of life, I can proudly claim that I can adapt quickly to new surroundings and will participate and excel in an assortment of activities. Be it the student council, the debating team, school volleyball varsity or community service (such as spending time with children from a blind school), I have learnt to meaningfully absorb as much as I can from a new environment. While these facts shape me as a person, I would like to share one incident which taught me one of the many important qualities in life.

...orbell rang and we all hurried to see who might be there. We all jumped in delight as we couldn’t believe our eyes-- standing there was my father. He had been asked to fly back for a few hours for some work and although he was to leave again the next day, we couldn’t stop rejoicing for the wonderful New Year's gift we had received. And elatedly, when the clock struck 12, we entered the New Year together, as a family.

This episode made me realize how important it is to enjoy life with the people you love and not to take their presence for granted. I learned how essential it is to remain calm and composed during trying times in one’s life. I will forever be grateful to my parents for the kind of life they have given me and the wonderful exposure that I received throughout my life, because it has made me confident enough to tackle any can of worms which come my way!
