New Ideas Threaten Established Powers
New ideas are what make a society grow economically, politically, and socially, but there are usually two sides in the opinion on whether they should be considered. The two sides are: new ideas are great and new ideas are a threat. However, innovations are new ideas that always threaten and challenge societies, which is the reason why societies in history have been hesitant to change their lifestyles. Some main innovations, such as religious values, publications, and social interactions, threaten the world’s established powers.
The spread or encouragement of religions to other countries has been a threat to history just as much as they have been in the present. The Qing dynasty is a great example because of Jesuits spreading Christianity from Europe to Asia. However, Christianity wasn’t a threat in the beginning, is was amazingly welcomed until the pope in Europe sided with critics, Franciscans and Dominicans, and ordered the Jesuit missionaries to stop promoting ancestor veneration and services in Chinese (Bently 585). Honestly, if a person wishes to spread a religion to new areas in the world, they most definitely shouldn’t take away the values of the new society to win converts. In response, ruler Kangxi banned the preaching of Christianity in China because this would change and challenge the cultural values within the government and society. In summary, it wasn’t necessarily the religion itself at first, it was the change of values and teachings that made Christianity a threat to the Qing dynasty and Kangxi himself later in time. In addition, most people were hesitant to covert anyway, in fear that their established powers, in this case religions such as Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddh...

...traying these situations is supported by the fact that 73% of teens are on a social network and 55% of teens have given out personal information to someone they don’t know, including photos and physical descriptions (Taylor). Parents see this as a threat because they can’t monitor what their children do 24/7 due to 67% of teens knowing how to hide what they do online from parents and only 34% of parents actually checking their social networks (Thomas). However, the circumstance still comes to a government threat when predators break the law of being involved with a minor, along with bullies triggering self-harm like suicide and cutting to their victims.
In conclusion, new ideas have the ability to be perceived as good ideas, but in reality, new ideas, for example religious values, publications, and social interactions, threaten the world’s established powers.
Enforcing universal truths has never worked in the past. The imposition of a new belief system is often met with much backlash. The Thirty Years War, French Wars of Religion, and the English Civil war are examples of much bloodshed due to religious conflict. It is with this knowledge that Appiah argues that we must let each other make personal decisions that directly correlate with how much one is affected by the impact of globalization. Thus the suggestion of ideas and the choice of whether or not to adopt them is much stronger and much more effective than forcing an idea upon
Based upon Fromm’s analysis many of the warnings presented in 1984 exist in today’s society. Currently society exists with “doublethink”, meaning as the days past society is one step closer to a dark era. Many people have already adapted this way of thinking, but if we want to
The idea: “Impact of ideas and beliefs” influenced our world presently because of the consequentiality it presents to every human, for it provides an imposing sense of righteousness, morality, and virtue. The past has affected our present, for if there were no past, there could be no future. Gazing at the development of ideas and beliefs, we recognize elements of contemporary
There are many crimes committed by teenagers every year. Crimes that are committed by teens each year are mainly assault, bullying, gang violence, and physical fights. According to National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, about 1 and 9 murders are from kids that are under 18 (Center, 2001). In 1998, there were approximately 2,570 among youth aged 10-19. Every day there are at least 7 children murdered in the United States (Center, 2001). Statistics say that between 16%-32% female teenagers have committed a crime before the age of 17. Also 30%-40% male teenagers have committed a violent crime before they turned 17 (Center, 2001). Teenagers that commit crimes are the ones who were abused or bullied as a...
Social networking sites leave opportunities for vulnerability, however, I don’t believe many youths are an easy target. Using ethos, pathos and logos individuals can create their own reality to relate to the internet world who they think are and how they wish to be seen. In mediated publics such as Facebook and Instagram, the user has complete control of his or her profile and is the only one who can allow content about his/herself to be shared. It is my personal belief that as technology has evolved many people have taken to fabricating some truths here and there and omitting details to give an ideal representation of who they are without incriminating themselves or leaving themselves vulnerable for mistreatment. The fantasy of what is or could be is more desirable than reality. In the past few years, privacy settings have been adapted to cover the growing technological advances to keep users safe from online predators.
Notably, each turning point in modern history has its own share of impacts to the world. They have assisted human beings to break away from the traditions that despised innovations, stalled development and civilization. The era before modern history did not have room for revolutions; instead things were done with absolute authority and in a certain way. Any digression from the ways set by traditions was a downright taboo (Eisenstein, 2012). Contrastingly, modern society appreciates progression and revolution ...

Ideology, Knowledge and the escalation of new ideas led to a better life and society that made positive impacts on Western Civilizations. There were many idea’s that were explored and implement into the daily lives of the people and for the most part it turned out to be a good impact. Although there were some bad ideas that caused suffering to the society at the time. They learned from what they witnessed and created something that would work better for the most part. In this essay I am going to use some primary sources that support my idea that society benefited from the new “ideas” but I will also use an example to explain how it caused a negative impact too.
Abstract: Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has been the world’s only unquestioned superpower. How the United States evaluates its position as global hegemon has important consequences for American foreign policy, particularly with regards to the potential for future policy constraints. Thus, this paper seeks to consider the question: How durable is American hegemony? The paper first defines the state of American hegemony and then considers the primary challengers: Europe, Russia, China, Japan and imperial overstretch. It will conclude that in the long-term, East Asian geopolitical instability poses the greatest threat to American hegemony, but that in the short-term, the hegemony will prove to be quite durable as long as the United States can counteract the phenomenon of imperial overstretch. In order to diffuse both internal and international threats to hegemony, American leaders should work to pursue national interests within a framework of consensus and legitimacy as much as possible.
In Kevin Alexander’s essay titled, “MySpace Not Responsible for Predators”, he places the blame on the mother and the daughter stating that “The girl, as traumatic as her experience was, should be held responsible, too.” His reasoning being that, the girl, at 14 years, was old enough to, “Calculate Risk” as well as have “Other higher brain functions.”. Who is to say that 14 year-olds have that kind of brain function? Today, adolescents and young adults are declared incapable of being responsible enough to make their own decisions such as buying cigarettes, getting a credit card, or a tattoo. If today’s youth are not capable to see the long term consequences, why is this girl being criticized and blamed for not observing the potential outcome of her actions online? Though it can be true that the m...
...l and perceptive way for rulers to unite empires and spread their society to other regions. The religion of Christianity, in itself, holds a number of assimilations with local pagan rituals that allowed for a much smoother transition. People tended to take the religion of the successful or more advanced civilizations because of logical areas as promoting trade and unifying their own neighbors, turning enemies into allies or possibly vassals. A further dissection of Christianity reveals that the ideas and precepts of this organization have striking similarities to that of other religions of the time. Although it should be noted that there is obviously no definitive answer on religion and it is the choice of the individual to follow their beliefs to their hearts content, but a bit of abstract observation and scrutiny is hardly a crime, at least in modern society.
Each year, schools are having to update the Codes of Conduct in order to keep up with the bullying that is occurring on social media. Schools have failed to effectively monitor and take action upon what these students have been doing to others and what others do in return. This has resulted in many lost lawsuits, in which schools were held liable for not taking appropriate action on what occurs outside of campus. School districts therefore must take more responsibility over what happens to the students, on and off campus. Districts argue that such instances are outside of the school’s control, however these victims are still their students. In the case of Ryan Halligan, a teenage boy who committed suicide at the young age of 13, Albert D. Lawton
All throughout history, we see this dichotomy between tradition and modernity. On one hand, we have tradition, the force living perpetually in the past and refusing to change. On the other hand, modernity leaves tradition behind in favor of progress. These two concepts, much like oil and water, dare to divide but coexist as a debatable founding solution. Not only are the themes Western ideas, but they have been present and are found in literature all around the world, from China to Africa.

Although social media is a healthy channel for personal interactions among friends and peers for the youth of today, the lack of understanding about online privacy creates a severe threat on multiple levels. Many teenagers and young adults remain oblivious to the consequences of their online posts and have little to no discretion when sending personal information to...
