Neville claims that God speaks directly to him: Claim to some divine authority is not necessarily a dangerous trait, as prominent religious groups within the world today were started by a leader or individual claiming to be a messenger or to have special insight from a divine being. A single leader’s claim to divine authority is the foundation of religions such as Islam (for example, Mohammad: a prophet of Allah), and thus this claim to divine authority itself cannot define a cult.
As Neville Cooper may argue: a leader who uses their authority to share their genuine interpretation of the Bible is not necessarily a cultic trait. Neville Cooper claims to focus his statements of creed, and thus what Gloriavale members follow, on the teachings of the bible. If true, this within itself is not a cultic trait as being influenced

“The power my dad had: he became so warped in his own self-image, in his self-belief, that it defied reason and logic.” - Phil Cooper (Scott, 2009). Neville’s son stated in the same documentary, that as the head of the community, Neville considered himself above a doctor and therefore could teach sexual education - even in practice - to young members. “Neville felt he was invincible. He viewed himself as called and chosen by Jesus… his decision would be the ultimate authority.” (Beale, 2009). Neville was sentenced to 5 years in prison in 1995 for indecent assault against community members, including his own son. A leader who places himself above the law and uses his authority to violate serious laws within the community is a cultic trait. Neville Cooper’s power “defied reason and logic”, which shows alone that his actions are considered immoral and wrong by his own son. “God’s law -his law- is above the law of the land” - Phil Cooper (Scott,

Published on the heels of Billing’s article, Douglas Greenberg’s “Crime, Law Enforcement, and Social Control in Colonial America” (1982) examines the effectiveness and factors of colonial law enforcement. Unlike New England’s legal system, which he describes as the most effective in seventeenth century America, “the Chesapeake colonies weathered a terrifying degree of conflict that was reflected not only in personal assaults and frequent thefts, but in substantial political violence as well.” He argues that the Virginia colony was at an innate disadvantage in terms of social order since the unequal sex ratio and age distribution meant a high level of violent crime. As such, stable family units which could have helped in subduing such undesired
Serpico (1973) is a movie that reveals the true story of Frank Serpico who was the only honest cop in the New York police sector at his time. The film shows the realistic view of the corruption that was evidenced in the New York police and highlights the character of Frank as being honest and courageous. Although he started as an inexperienced cop, he later worked as an undercover officer and was determined to bust all the criminal activities especially the drug dealers and pushers. Unlike the other cops, Serpico refused to take any bribes from the wrongdoers. More so, he felt that the other officers were doing wrong by accepting bribes and wanted to expose the situation. The other officers were so corrupt that they collected more money through bribes than the salary they earned, a situation that did not please Serpico. His strong stand concerning corruption made his friends turn against him, placing his life in danger. The anti-corruption efforts of Serpico jeopardized his life at the hands of his colleagues. He was later transferred to the Narcotics Squad where he was shot by a drug dealer after his partners betrayed him by failing to support him. The cop was then rushed to hospital. The shooting made Frank deaf since it affected the brain, rendering

The Voice, 'Ol' Blue Eyes', Swoonatra, La Voz, and Chairman of the Board. These were all sobriquets of the infamous Frank Sinatra. However, one of Sinatra's earliest and possibly most well-known nicknames was The Voice. A title such as The Voice is more than just a name that sounds cool and sensual. It promises something flawless about his singing style, signifying you could select one song, or perhaps even an album, as representative of Frank Sinatra. However, Sinatra had a multitude of styles over his five decade career, so to call him the voice could potentially be doing an injustice, perhaps a more accurate description would be The Voices.
