1.1 Background Information
The task I am assigned to do is authorized by Pokhara University and ACE Institute of Management in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration. This proposal writing assignment was guided by our course instructor Mr. Prakash C. Bhattarai and with his help and my interest I selected the topic: An Overview of the Fashion Boutique Industry of Nepal.
I have always been interested in fashion. These are the people who are in the industry; who know about fashion, designs, and trends ultimately shaping the Nepalese fashion industry into new forms. They are the people who are learning about what is happening in the industry right now and what will or should happen in the future of the fashion industry of Nepal. So, I have decided to survey the boutique owners of the Kupondole area of Patan since that seems to be the centre point of the boutique industry of Kathmandu
A boutique is a small shopping outlet, especially one that specializes in elite and fashionable items such as clothing and jewellery. In terms of Nepal, boutiques are a small shopping outlets specializing in fashionable ready-to wear items, as well as a home to the boutique owner’s creations. Dozens of boutiques and fashion designing companies lining up from Bagmati Bridge to Himalayan Hotel in Kupandole is enough to indicate that fashion has already grown up as an entrepreneurship in Kathmandu. Youth have started to see a good prospect in fashion as entrepreneurship. National Institute of Art and Fashion Designing, India Education Center, Namuna College of Fashion Technology, Lakhotia Institute of Fashion Designing and Lord Buddha Education Foundation are some of the institute offering fashion education in Nepal. In chapter five of Suitably Modern, Mark Liechty discusses the action of “doing fashion” and how it affects the middle class and consumption in Kathmandu. Chapter five poses the question; what is new and what is not? This concerns the class distinctions and if modernization is actually occurring. The middle class in Kathmandu is claiming its own domain through clothing and ostracizing themselves. The author deems this action as adornment he defines it by stating, “It is used to set individuals and groups apart from some and to signal sameness”. Adornment can be a class distinction but also a gender role distinction. Women practice adornment to be indifferent in their relationships with men. For example women can chose to use flashier make-up which can distinguish a married woman from an unmarried woman. Liechty associates fashion with freedom. Film coming to Kathmandu quickly generated the modernization of fashion and consumption. Films exposed the residents to different types of fashion. Ultimately, the middle class wants its own cultural zone; through fashion and consumption it hopes to completely fit in with one another and still be distinct from other classes.
Fashion has been around ever since ancient times, since the time of the Romans, it survived the world wars and is yet today a business with rapid changes. Fashion started off as an art form, a way for the rich to show their social status with unique and innovative designs that only they could afford. It was a way to separate the social classes of the society. In this paper I will include the creators of haute couture, and how the following designers developed couture, as well as leading names in today’s ready-to-wear industry. The list is long, but I chose to focus on the three most important designers in the modern fashion industry.
