Introduction This research task is going to focus on land pollution and the factors that influence the pollution. The aim is to see whether The Nelspruit Plaza is polluted as opposed to the Crossings centre. Both of these areas are major centres where people come on a daily basis to either shop, work and/even find means of public transportation. The Nelspruit Plaza has a taxi rank and multiple informal businesses i.e. venders all around, the Plaza also has a number of building centres, the Plaza is considered to be an under-developed area where as the Crossings centre is a developing area. These area are subject to land pollution, the Plaza has a history of pollution because of the number of people as well as the lack of public bins which make the area negatively impacted, the …show more content…
Find second area parallel to location 1 to compare the two areas, use this second area as your control variable and label as location 2.
Step2
Stand at a point at location 1 mark this point X on the sides of the road location walk a hundred steps along the length (longest side) of location 1 and 74 steps along width (the shortest side) of location1. Mark X at this point as well.
Step 3
Repeat these two steps twice to form a rectangular shape.
Step 4
Wear the gloves and collect any rubbish you see from points X to X in any direction and put into the small bin. If bin gets full then put into the black refuse bag.
Step 5
Mark the bin/refuse bag 1.
Step 6
Repeat steps 1-5 at location 2.
Step 7
Take your data home and weigh it, then fill your results in a table.
Step 8
Repeat step 4, 5, 6 and 7 for another four days.

The use of this device is easier than you’d think. First, measure and record the weight of the food

Florida International University recognizes its contribution to the accumulation of waste considering that it produces about seven million pounds of waste each year (Figueroa, 2010). Unlike other universities that still remain adamant in investing on green practices, FIU has, “governed by the State of Florida under Florida Statute 403.714 and The Florida Solid Waste Management Act of 1988” (FIU, 2011), established its own internal ‘green machine’ or solid waste and environmental protection system via the FIU Custodial Services Office. The university’s efforts in ensuring efficient solid waste management even “far exceeds the minimum standards” (FIU, 2011) required by law. What makes the solid waste management efforts of the university one-of-a kind is the establishment of a “single stream recycling program which means that all recyclable items can be placed into one bin and do not have to be sorted” (FIU, 2011). Nevertheless, despite the use of single recycle bins, proper labeling has to accompany each bin to ensure that only materials that are recyclable are placed in the bins. There are also different sized of bins which are placed stra...

Movements Towards Sustainability “The Death of Sprawl,” an article written by Warren Karlenzig, makes strong points on how urban and suburban development led to a non-sustainable future for the environment. The author is strongly against suburban boom and he implies every aspect of the growth is a disadvantage. His study proves heavy researches were done, however, it lacks of suggestions on how a reader can make changes effectively. On the other hand, “Local Government in a Time of Peak Oil and Climate Change,” written by John Kaufmann, provides responses and solutions to a number of problems the population is facing. This article is intended for audiences from local government as well as to people who are willing to involve and make changes.

One of the most dangerous environment issues Southern California is facing today is air pollution. This includes the burning of fossil fuels and natural disasters. Los Angeles is one of the most polluted cities in the world, and the most polluted city in the United States. I will research information about the causes, the effects, and the history of air pollution in the Los Angeles. For my research, I have relied mostly on, the school’s database and library, as well as current events.
Until 10 years ago, air pollution was thought to be just an urban or local problem until it was discovered that the pollutants could move across continents and oceans. Air pollution is the fundamental factor that causes greenhouse gases, hence climate change and global warming. Air pollutants are the waste products generated from industrial and other processes. They usually come in gases, though aerosols (particles suspended in air, emitted as or formed by transformatio...
Urban people change their environment through their consumption of food, energy, water, and land. And in turn, the polluted urban environment affects the health and quality of life of the urban
1). Environmental sustainability presents itself as a major problem with transportation and negatively effects both present and future generations of people living in Toronto, in order to meet transportation demands. The level of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile hydrocarbons (VH) produced from cars in Toronto are comparable to that of the United States. However, the level of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and volatile particulates produced in Toronto are 2.3 kg/capita and 3.9 kg/capita, which is significantly higher than parts of the United States (Kennedy, 2002).
Contact the pollution control authorities in your community for the levels or air pollutants. Identify main air pollutants and the possible causes of air pollution. How does your community compare to others? Discuss your findings.
Do you know how many tons of garbage filling up landfills everyday? Do you know how many kilograms of daily domestic waste we generate? According to government's figures, there are 13,500 tons of waste landfilling in Hong Kong everyday, in which a third of it is food waste. Each Hong Kong citizen produces 1.36kg domestic waste everyday, which is at least 36% more than Taipei, Seoul and Tokyo. Waste disposal has been a highly controversial topic in recent years. If the trash production rate keeps on increasing, three landfills in Hong Kong will be exhausted one by one in two to six years. Landfill is the only way to dispose waste in Hong Kong. In order to tackle the municipal solid waste(MSW) problem, government decides to build an incinerator in Shek Kwu Chau, with other waste disposal method. The purpose of this project are to reduce the total amount of garbage, increase in the recovery rate of MSW and reduce the total MSW disposed of in landfills.
Urban Environmental Problems of the City of Banjul, the Public Health Challenges and where lies the solution. - By Abdoukarim Sanneh
Policy is needed to regulate which course of action should be taken and how it should be implemented. Because of this, many plans and policies revolving around the management of solid waste have been put in place. Sometimes however, a particular policy can have its shortfalls, potentially resulting in its negative aspects outweighing the positive ones. According to the Conference Board of Canada Report, “Canadians dispose of more municipal solid waste per capita than any other country” (2013). Solid waste management in particular, involves many aspects, ranging from packaging waste, food waste, etc. (White & Franke 1999), hence, the following analysis revolves around household and commercial waste – referred to as Municipal Solid Waste (White & Franke. 1999) – in the Greater Vancouver Regional District. Municipal waste is a major health and environmental concern as it contributes to numerous problems like habitat destruction, surface groundwater pollution, and other forms of air, soil, and water contamination. Waste disposal methods like incineration create toxic substances, and landfills emit methane, which contributes to global warming. According to the Zero Waste Objective Report, “The impact of climate change and the increasing awareness of the role of “waste” and “wasting” in the production of greenhouse gas emissions is a constant environmental pressure… (2009). This leads to an increasing limitation of government to prevent and control the volume and toxicity of products in the waste stream and a growing need to shift responsibility to the product manufacturer.
America and Europe are at the top of the list for most waste generated according to Waste (4). This is very visible because there’s litter on every street in the towns and cities, as well in lakes, beaches, and rivers. The book Waste by Rob Bowden states that the amount of waste produced is increasing at a rate faster than population growth. About 1.5 million computers, in the U.K, are thrown away each year and most end up in landfills. There are 3 types of waste which are Municipal Solid Waste, Industrial Waste, and Hazardous waste. MSW includes waste from public garbage cans and local dumpsters. Industrial Waste includes massive amounts of waste water that is contaminated with chemicals. Hazardous waste is the most dangerous as it presents a danger to human health and the environment. Solutions for waste disposal take time because people need to consider their lifestyle and limit the amount of waste they generate. A good start is to recycle items such as paper, cans, plastic, and clothes. This way they don’t end up in landfills, beaches, or streets. Another solution is to join organizations that go around places to recycle, or organizations that demand the reduction in the amount of products that are being
