Nelson Mandela as President Nelson Mandela was initially the President of the African National Congree ( ANC ) in 1991, which via negotiations with the apartheid state, he led ANC to victory in the first election in South Africa in 1994. This then further resulted in Nelson Mandela becoming the first democratically elected leader of South Africa in May 10 1994. However, Nelson Mandela , upon election, made it clear that he would only serve , as President, one term only and not seek re-election.

The Springbok was a symbol of the apartheid. Majority of the blacks of South Africa were seeking revenge after years of humiliation under the apartheid system while the whites were waiting to see what Nelson Mandela could do with regards to his vision of a rainbow nation. Nelson Mandela saw the rugby world cup final as a platform reconciliation and forgiveness. Despite having strong objections from the African National Congress, Nelson Mandela reached out to his former enemies and invited the captain of the Springbok, François Pienaar for tea at his office in Pretoria. During this talk with François Pienaar, Nelson Mandela asked for François Pienaar’s help to bring his team to unite the nation. This friendship with François Pienaar then brought together Nelson Mandela and the members of the South African Rugby Union, namingly former Springbok captain, Morne Du Plessis, the late coach, Kitch Christie and the soon-to-be chief executive of the union, Edward Griffiths. Edward Griffiths then came up with a slogan ‘ One Team, One country ‘ while Morne Du Plessis made the players learn the old song of black resistance, now the new national anthem, Nkosi Sikelele Afrika (God Bless Africa). The ANC’s goal was, “ to transform the ANC into a mass grassroots movement, deriving strength from millions. . . who had no voice under the current regime. . . [The ANC] officially adopted the Youth League's methods of boycott, strike, civil disobedience and noncooperation” (“Nelson Mandela Biography”). Mandela joined the ANC in order to peacefully remove the government’s racist policies. After he joined, Mandela spent lots of time going in and out of jail. He succeeded. Years later, in 1994, Mandela became the first black president. When he became president, he sought to better the country and guarantee the blacks rights’. Two years after his presidency, Mandela “signed into law a new constitution for the nation, establishing a strong central government based on majority rule, and guaranteeing both the rights of minorities and the freedom of expression” (“Nelson Mandela Biography”). In the same year that the ANC was banned, Nelson Mandela created the underground military group called ‘Spear of the Nation’. Two years later, Nelson was arrested for a five-year sentence for protesting but he ran away. Another 2 years later, he was recaptured and sent to life imprisonment, he had to spend 18 years in Robben Island Prison. His prison room number in Robben Island was 466/64. In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison and the ban on the ANC was lifted by Frederik Willem de Klerk (the president of South Africa at that time). The reason for this was because Nelson and de Klerk had secret conversations when Nelson was in prison. Together in 1993, they won the Nobel Peace Prize because they got rid of the apartheid system (a system that separated people by their color in South Africa/showed discrimination and segregation towards the black people). A year later, South Africa had its first election that everyone with any skin color was allowed to vote. The ANC won the election and Nelson became the first black president in South Africa.
