Neil Armstrong fulfills the role of an epic hero. For thousands of years mankind had dreamed of walking on the moon. In 1969, as part of the Apollo 11 mission Neil Armstrong became the very first to accomplish that dream. Their accomplishment placed the U.S. ahead of the Soviets Union. It gave people around the world the hope of future space exploration. Neil Armstrong was also an aerospace engineer, naval aviator, test pilot, and university professor. Armstrong is an epic hero when he becomes the first man to walk on the moon, he undertakes a great journey when he travels to the moon in a space shuttle with his fellow astronauts, and he encounters many archetypes such as a boon, ceremony, and situational archetypes during his epic journey. Neil Armstrong signs up to become a NASA astronaut. The Upper world is Earth which is the known, and the Under world is space which is the unknown. There was a short ceremony introducing the men on apollo 11, and the initiation was the lift off. At approximately 9:32 a.m. on July 16, 1969 from the kennedy space center they launched. Armstrong passes the portal when he reaches space atmosphere, there he reaches many test such as many difficulties with the space craft before landing on the moon, because of the pressure, speed and zero gravity the controls had some glitches. At 10:56 p.m. Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon. This is similar to the Golden Fleece because there is a known and a unknown, also there is a great journey taken, in which Jason has to find the Golden Fleece. ...ause it was the mission that NASA was able to put the first man up onto the moon. Neil Armstrong was the pilot of the Apollo 11 flight. There was a special shuttle that was attached to the spaceship; it was called the Eagle. The Eagle was designed to transport some crew members down to the moon. Armstrong was responsible for driving and landing the shuttle safely down to the moon. While on his way down to the moon, Armstrong realized that he was starting to run out of fuel. Thankfully, Armstrong did have enough to land on the moon and make it back up to the spaceship. When the Eagle was leaving the spaceship for the first time up in space, it wasn't completely depressurized so there was something like a gas bubble come from the shuttle as it was on its way to the moon. The gas bubble moved the shuttle off course and the Eagle actually landed four miles off course.
On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong planted the first human footprints in the lunar soil. The United States had accomplished their goal in sending men to the moon. They managed to not only send them 238,857 mi. (384,403 km) into space to our neighbor celestial body, but also send them back with a successful flight to our mother earth. In this novel he talks about The Heroes Journey which are twelve different stages of adventure known as the Ordinary World, the Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Meeting the Mentor, Crossing the Threshold, Test/Allies/Enemies, Approach to the Inmost Cave, Ordeal, Reward, the Road Back, Resurrection, and the Return With The Elixir. The Odyssey is about a legendary hero named Odysseus, who fought among the Greeks in the battle of Troy and went through the stages of The Heroes Journey. Odysseus lived in Ithaca, Northwest of Greece, with his wife Penelope and son Telemachus.

A person that has earned the title of veteran is an American Hero, simple as that. The top three qualities that stand out to me when reflecting on veterans are selflessness, courage, and commitment. I come from a long line of military veterans on all sides of my family. Writing this essay is very easy when I think about those family members. However, the most important point of this essay is to address how ALL Americans should recognize our veterans as being our real life super heroes. On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy gave a speech about what he called "urgent national needs" at a stadium at Rice University in Houston, Texas (“NASA Moon Landing”). In that speech, he challenged America to "commit itself to landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth by the end of the decade"(Schlager and Lauer). This became known as Kennedy's challenge and the idea was to outperform the Soviets. While the Soviets were off to a better start with the launch of Sputnik I, we soon rose to the challenge and accomplished our goal only eight years later on June 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin safely landed on the moon. With the great accomplishments of Apollo 11, America had bettered the Soviets and established superiority in space.
