Parenting styles have great effects on children, especially on their behaviors and emotions. If there is a negative parenting style with one parent it is likely that we would see the same style in the second parent (Ritchie and Buchanan, 2011), in Chinese American children we see that parenting styles and pressure have a huge effect on emotions (Yuwen and Chen, 2013). We also see the how the three different types of parenting styles –authoritative, authoritarian and permissive, affects emotional regulation (Jabeen, Anis-ul-Haque and Riaz, 2013).

The Wall Street Journal published an article by Victoria Ruan that was titled “In China, Not All Practice Tough Love”. In her article, she briefly discusses what we think of as typical behavior between children and parents in China. She describes the brutal relationships between children and their parents when it comes to schoolwork and being the best possible student in the class. Ruan states how in years past children have been pushed in their studies by their parents to the point in which children start to lose their individuality and love for “not so important” hobbies. According to Ruan, chinese parents don’t just push their children to extremes in order for their children to be as smart as possible, the main goal of this “tough love” mannerism is to ensure that their children have a happy and successful life. However, Ruan believes that in recent years we now have less reason to believe in these stereotypes about chinese parents and their children.
Growing up, two group of people, parents, and grandparents, took the time and the energy to raise me. Both of them had different approaches when raising me. These approaches were different parenting styles. According to Baumrind, parenting style was the “[capturing] normal variations in parents’ attempts to control and socialize their children” (Darling, 1999). To put it simply, parenting style goal was to lecture, influence, and discipline a child. In general, there are four parenting styles with their own specific benefits and disadvantages. Furthermore, parenting style, granted the dynamic of the family was understood, can be identified in families.
In the article, “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior,” Amy Chua writes about how to raise a child, focusing her analysis between the modes of childcare as per Western and Chinese cultural dictates respectively (Chua 408). Amy outlines several things that her children are not allowed to do including: watching television for inordinately long hours and even, taking sleepovers. Amy’s methods have been shown to be very strict and pedagogical, quite unlike those adopted in the Western communities. She believes that Western parents tend to be soft when dealing with their children and instead, only exert dedicated effort towards the attainment of their children’s goals, unlike the Chinese mothers (Chua 408). Parenting styles are the way that parents discipline, raise, and show their affection to their children. The book defines parenting methods as, “how, and to what extent, parents seek to control their children” (Meyers & Dewall). The book also lists three different styles of parenting, defining them as authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. The mindset of the child, how the child deals with social interactions, and the overall mental health of the child can all be affected depending on the parenting styles that their parents choose to use.
Throughout nearly all studies, it has become clear that parenting seems to have two main aspects that build it: demandingness and responsiveness. With these two characteristics, there are 4 main “parenting styles” that can be distinguished, each having their own level of both features.
Parenting styles refer to a set of different manners in which parents raise their children. The authoritarian parenting style is based on the implementation of rules, and on the idea that all rules should be followed without exceptions. Similarly, authoritative parenting style implements rules, but the child feelings are taken in consideration and reasonable exceptions to the rule are allowed. On the other hand, in permissive parenting style, there is implementation of rules, but they are rarely encouraged to be followed. Parenting in today’s society is extremely competitive. Raising children has become the new sport interest to the parents, and the success that the kids achieve in life is the gold medal. You see the articles in magazines, the websites online, and the ads on TV that promote the newest and greatest parenting methods used by mothers and father everywhere. The differences we see in parenting can differ from family to family, but the biggest contrast is between the different ethnicities of the world. How a Western mother raises her child may be completely different than that of a Chinese mother. These differences are the ones that are observed by author Amy Chua, as well as mothers who have read her works of literature.
A parent’s parenting styles are as diverse as the world we live in today. Nowadays, parents only want what is best for their children and their parenting styles plays a crucial role in the development of children which will in the long run, not only effect the child’s childhood years, but later prolong into their adult life as well.
Authoritative style remains high in all four domains. Authoritative parents’ use of appropriate discipline such as using time-out or mild punishment ensures their children’s independence along with children’s compliance with parental demands. Compare to children with any other parenting styles, children raised by authoritative parents have higher self-esteem, self confidence, and better grades in elementary school, high school, and college. Parenting styles have been widely defined by Baumrind into three categories, authoritative, authoritarian and permissive. Parenting styles can be defined as a pattern of attitudes in how parents choose to express and communicate with their children. These styles are categorized based on the level of nurturance, parental control and level of responsiveness (Dwairy, 2004). Authoritative style exhibits high levels of demand, responsiveness and nurturance; authoritarian style exhibits high levels of demand but low levels of responsiveness, permissive style exhibits low levels of demand but high in responsiveness and nurturance (Dwairy, 2004). These parenting styles have been proposed to have a significant impact on a child’s development as well as academic achievement and psychological well-being. Children reared by authoritative parents are stated to have the highest levels of academic achievement, self-esteem, emotional adjustment and well-being according to Baumrind’s category of styles (Dwairy, 2004). However, these three categories are based on Western samples and have been said to describe parenting styles mainly in the West and question its limitations in describing parenting across cultures, as each style’s defining patterns may have different meanings across cultures.
The two notable parenting styles discussed in Amy Chua’s article, “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” are the Western style parenting and the Chinese Tiger Mom style parenting. Chua explains the methods, the advantages and the disadvantages of both styles. She believes that Tiger Mom parenting is superior to Western parenting. In her article, Chua proves that raising children with the firm belief that failure is unacceptable will prepare them for the future.

It is a time to nurture, instruct, and correct to develop fundamental skills children will need to be mature, responsible, and contributing adults to a society. It could be said that, with any style of parenting, there is no explicit set of rules for every situation, and what works for one child may not be effective for another.

It was seen that overall children that experienced greater levels of aggressive actions had considerably more negative parent-child interaction. The parents of these children can decide to send their one and only child off to these sport training boarding schools, where they undergo years of grueling training. But to these parent this is the best way to raise their child, because they have a slim chance of bringing honor to their family and to China and can have more opportunities for a successful career (Taboo). As the earliest and most durable source of socialization, a child’s parents are the first people with whom he identifies, and they remain the strongest influence in his development. This overwhelming importance of parenting has led developmental psychologists to take an intense interest in parent/child interactions(George and Rajan, 99). A study of the relation between child inhibition and parenting styles(Canada vs. China) has shown that, child inhibition was associated with mothers ' positive attitudes toward the child, including acceptance, lack of punitiveness, and encouragement of achievement among Chinese participants and with punishment and overprotectiveness among Canadian participants. In another study done by Sonia George and Amar Rajan, thirteen variables (factors) were identified as factors of child-rearing, which constituted how parents bring up their children. The factors include acceptance, punishment, protectiveness, responsibility, responsiveness, reward, understanding, non-critical, permissiveness, encouragement, rapport, emotional stability, and patience(George Rajan 101).
