Social media is well known for expanding one’s communal circle, reuniting old friends and for sharing celebratory pictures and achievements with loved ones. However, social media might not always be the most beneficial. This essay will argue that social media may lead to social isolation. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, may make us even more lonely. Loneliness is caused when someone is deprived of sympathetic or friendly companionship or support. It is when a person is feeling isolated or rejected but is not a direct cause of being alone. We turn to social media thinking it will give us a boost and make us feel better. It allows us to meet new people and form new connections with like-minded people. Social media is a great platform for sharing and gaining ideas, voicing opinions and finding new hobbies. Twitter is a great example because it is a popular platform where people are allowed to reply to each other’s opinions, creating a space where it is easy to start healthy and educative discussions about topics we are passionate about. When we find people who agree with our beliefs and ideas, we feel included and accepted.
