Studies have shown that environment dictates human behaviors. Past experiences, life events and influences can change how we view the world. Philips Zimbardo, a famous psychologist, once said, “Human behavior is incredibly pliable, plastic.” Social media such as Instagram and Facebook in the 21th century have tremendous influence on human behavior. It is all about what the person’s morals are and their beliefs of right and wrong. A strong moral person will not do anything and everything they see on social media just because it looks cool. People are more likely to wait the advantages and disadvantages of their actions before doing anything or at least post it online. Nowadays, many college students are becoming more aware of their post online because many potential employers will check their social media. Teen are being slain by cyberbullies everyday. Not all social media is good for teens. Even no social media is better. Almost every teenager has a cellphone or some sort of device that lets them check their social media. Many websites like Facebook, Instagram, and snapchat are bad and can cause teenagers to do bad things to themselves or other people. Banning social media will make teens have better grades, be more safer, and have more self confidence with less depression.
Continuing from Probst’s article, she mentions a few negative qualities of social media, including: being addictive, making people compare their lives with others, causing restlessness, giving rise to cyberbullying, and inducing peer pressure. While scrolling through social media, users tend to see images of people on adventures or of people spending time with numerous friends. As the users view these images, they cannot help but to compare their own lives to those who appear to be having more fun, and they may think less of their own lives. Another problem that is arising through social media is cyberbullying. A survey was conducted showing that 95% of youths have witnessed cyberbullying (Probst). Not only is the effects of cyberbullying harmful to mental health, but it is very difficult to stop this type of bullying because it often happens behind closed doors; a private message is sent and can only be viewed by the sender and receiver. An online questionnaire created by Helen Gore and Catriona Morrison shows the correlation between depression and internet addiction and they were able to conclude that internet use is causing people to have more depressive tendencies. When people have a job they could get in trouble if they start bashing on coworkers. In person conversations aren’t the best because people can give off false information about themselves.
