With more than 350 million active users, Facebook is one of the most popular social-networking sites in history. While it may have benefits such as connecting one with friends, it may also have very negative effects that could be irreversible. Three main negative effects that could arise from using Facebook include loss of sleep, depression, and putting one in a dangerous situation. At a quick glance, Facebook may be perceived as an intriguing and enjoyable website, but the addictions that sometimes arise from overuse correlate to fatal effects. These effects could be minuscule, easy to cope with, unhealthy, or life-changing. The first critical effect, the distractions that are caused by addiction, links to areal loss of sleep. According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative. The continual use of social network sites will impact teen lives more negatively than positively because they can cause huge distractions from valuable and critical pursuits like education; they can also cause mental health issues and a reduction in communication skills.

For example, many teens are using shorthand and abbreviations when writing or communicating online. Additionally, teens lose themselves in social media, ignore their surroundings and even become addicted to social media. Consequences of this include a rise in obesity, devaluation in family, lack of exercise and decrease in focus on school and homework. Adolescents that use social media more often than others are more prone to “narcissistic tendencies,” “anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders” (Protalinski, 2011). One of the most concerning effects of social media is depression. When teens create an online identity, they are often displaying an unauthentic self. This “other” self is often what the person wants to be like. Having to jump from the online self to the real self can often lead to depression.
