Is Tourism a good thing or a bad thing?
Tourism is the act of travelling to and touring a location for pleasure. It is a very controversial topic due to the effects on the places that are being visited and toured. Some of these are positive, but there are also many negative aspects of tourism. The purpose of this topic is to determine whether the good things outweigh the bad, and if anything could be changed to better the negative effects.
There has been rapid growth in tourism, especially since the 1980s (Walton, 2009) and continues to become more popular as each year passes. The reason people travel is different for each person. Correia (2005) explains "Each tourist has his/her own internal and external motivations to travel". Some people

Regardless of how careful a traveller can be, there is still a risk of them bringing infection and disease to the destination of their choice. McLaren (cited in Holderfield, 1999) explains "An estimated 90% of indigenous peoples in the Americas died due to exposure to disease brought over by Europeans". This may have been a long time ago, but the risk is still there as a number of destinations do not have the advancements of modern medicine (Holderfield, 1999). On the positive side, the income and support that a country receives by catering to the tourism sector, can be used to improve their own medicine (if they choose to) and educate people in that …show more content…
We 've discussed some of the positive effects and the negatives that go hand in hand. Regardless of the conclusion, tourism is unavoidable as long as there are people who wish to travel and tour other locations to their home and there will always be places willing to cater to that want. It is not inherently 'bad ' as all tourism really roots from is just people travelling for pleasure, plus their own personal reasons, and it is almost never for a negative reason. It is better to see tourism as a good thing with some bad impacts that are being managed differently by each country, and to support the positives while continuing to attempt in fixing the negatives. Although overall there may be more negatives than positives, it is what some call a 'necessary evil
Tourism impacts can be generally classified into seven categories with each having both positive and negative impacts. These impacts include; economic, environmental, social and cultural, crowding and congestion, taxes, and community attitude. It is essential for a balance on array of impacts that may either positively or negatively affect the resident communities. Different groups are concerned about different tourism impacts that affect them in one way or another. Tourism’s benefits can be increased by use of specific plans and actions. These can also lead to decrease in the gravity of negative impacts. Communities will not experience every impact but instead this will depend on particular natural resources, development, or spatial patterns (Glen 1999).
There is not really a universally accepted definition of tourism. In 1994 the World Tourism Organization (WTO) revised its definition. It says the tourism comprises of 'the activities of persons travelli...

Half of century has gone since ‘tourism boom’ began in 1960s (Tirados, 2011). Nowadays, desire to be a tourist is virtually universe which has made tourism become a central element of globalization. The profit brought from tourism is something that we cannot deny however everything has its two sides which are good and bad, advantages and disadvantages or positive and negative. Thailand is a great example to find out the advantages and disadvantages of the development of tourism impact on the country.
According to the ‘World Tourism Organization’ (UNWTO), the tourism industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world, as it is estimated that by the year 2020, 7.8 billion people (roughly a quarter of the world’s population) will embark on a foreign trip (Bennett & Gebhardt 15). The Caribbean is said to be the most economically dependent on this industry, as the ‘Caribbean Tourism Organisation’ states that the industry forms the “economic backbone of most countries in the Region”(“Caribbean Tourism Industry” 1). The implications for tourism’s affect on the region have arisen and have prompted further research into this matter. Since the 1970’s, research regarding tourism in the Caribbean has attempted to determine the social, cultural, environmental, and economic impacts of tourism. Much of the research has found that there are in fact many negative adverse effects, and Jackson’s article asserts that, “Governments often commit money and other resources to support the growth and development of tourism and often turn a blind eye to its negative impacts” (574).
Tourism is something that has continuously been growing at a rapid rate, providing both positive impacts as well as negative. There are so many different reasons why people decide to travel to certain destinations, and a person’s character plays a huge role in this. Certain types of tourism would include, dark tourism, adventure, culinary, and ecotourism to name a few. One type of tourism that has become increasingly popular is volunteering tourism. “Volunteer tourism, sometimes called "voluntourism," refers to the practice of spending vacation time and money traveling to a destination to perform volunteer service. While people have engaged in the practice of paying their way to help in another area for many years, the concept grew in
What is more, tourism also produces a lot of pollution through littering, noise and emissions from road traffic in many areas. Another negative effect is the merging and interaction between cultures. When those cultures become globalized, their chances of facing loss of tradition and culture will be extremely high. The ones that are most likely to be influenced by foreign cultures are teenagers.... ...
Travel has increased throughout the years. According to World Tourism Organization travel has increased by 5% in 2013 with 1,087 million people traveling. This is an additional 52 million international travels from the previous year. This increase in travel has brought a very positive impact on many economies around the world and is predicted to continue to do so in the following years. In 2014 UNWTO believes international travel will continue to grow up to 4-4.5%. Throughout the world the places most influenced by the demand for tourism are Asia and the pacific, Africa, and Europe (World Tourism Organization UNWTO). This increase in travel has shown that more people have decided to immerse themselves into new experiences and cultures, and that travel companies believe that more and more people will begin and continue to travel.
Numerous attempts to understand the complex inner works of human behaviour and motivation have been sought amongst researchers in the tourism field for many years. After all, motivation is ‘the trigger that sets off all events in travel’ (Parrinello, 1993 cited in Sharpley, 1994), thus making it the most indispensable subject in tourism studies. Hence, it is the aim of this paper to critically examine the different theories on travel motivations and tourism behaviour typologies and discuss their usefulness for practitioners involved in marketing and planning tourism. The first part of the discussion will be focused on the existing theories on ‘push factors’ that drive upon individuals the desire to travel, and the latter part, will look at the different typologies of tourist behaviour attempted by researchers in an effort to better understand why people travel.
Let us look at some facts to contextualize the problem . With eleven hundred thirty-three million travellers, the recent years have seen the greatest global tourist expansion of all times: in 2014, tourism
The meaning of Tourism can relate to traveling for personal leisure, for relatives, business or events etc. The Tourism Industry is very complex, according to The International Career Institute (International Career Institute, 2016) it is one of the biggest and constantly developing industry to be a part of. Transportation, Restaurants, Casino’s, Hospitality, Events, Accommodation, Airlines all belong to the Tourism Industry (Open Universities Australia, n.d.). Perrottet states that the Tourism Industry has developed into a significant sector that can influence the growth of the country’s economy as well as the growth of the population (Perrottet, 2016), for some people it is nothing. But to other counties, The Tourism sector is the main source of success, happiness, good health and income. The
“Tourism can be defined as the theories and practices for being a tourist. This involves travelling and visiting for leisure related purposes” (Leiper, 1995). The Gold Coast is one of Australia’s extremely popular holiday destinations. The Gold Coast is famous for its beaches, theme parks and attractions, shopping, nightlife and rainforests. It has been attracting Australian families for many decades. The region has capitalised on its attractive environment, climate and lifestyle and has a highly specialised economy that is dominated by the tourism industry. However, several challenges/problems have been created over the years to fulfill the needs and wants of tourists.
Nowadays in the rea of globalization, according to the World Tourism Organization, “seven hundred million people travelled abroad in 2003”, and the number is estimated to increase to 1.6 billion by 2020. (International Labour Organization, 2005). Tourism is spreading in unusual places. A lot of people want to be in the midst of adventure. It is a vital source of revenues for the GDP of many countries. I partially agree that tourism hugely benefits the local community. This essay will discuss some of the economic, social and environment effect of tourism on the host community.
The negative impacts that tourism creates can destroy the environment and all of its resources which it depends of for survival. Tourism has the prospective to create and bring useful effects on to the environment by donation the environmental protection conservation.
