How Smartphone Has Affected to Children “How has smartphone affected to children?” Since the smartphone has become indispensable in our daily lives, apart of our bodies, this kind of question has been asked for last few years and till this moment. We do know that everything has two sides, which are negative and positive, and we try to deal with the negative side by balancing both of them so that we can get more benefits from it. However, children, they are still too young to perceive the potential hazard of using smartphone. Besides the listen and call functions, the smartphone has a bunch of features that we can benefit from it such as listening to music, recording, taking and editing photo, and so on. Moreover, it can be an excellent tool to study for children with the feature such as Siri, Google, dictionary, calculator, and free online books (The Apple’s operating system has a feature called iBooks, which allow you freely to access a lot of books). As in 2013, the rate of children in the United States, who owned a smartphone is very high. From 10 to 13 years old, there was 56%, and from 14 to 17, there was 66%. Renowned German scientist Albert Einstein once said “it has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity” (“Albert Einstein”). As portrayed in “The Veldt” Ray Bradbury’s thoughts on technology resemble Einstein’s. Bradbury was born on August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois and died on June 5, 2012. At the time when “The Veldt” was written, many American families purchased television sets, which inspired this story. Concerned with the increasing popularity of television and its possible negative effects during the time, Bradbury wrote “The Veldt”. In this short story, two children become attached to their high-tech nursery and value it more than their own parents. In the review titled “Overview: ‘The Veldt’” mentions that “this fear [of television] is directly reflected in ‘The Veldt,’ but in the story, Bradbury heightens the odds by creating a machine that not only allows children to detach emotionally from their parents, but one that can also physically destroy the parents, as well” (“Overview”). The family in the story lives in a high tech home with a nursery that can transform into any setting the two children imagine. George and Lydia believe the children created a scene they should not have, the African Veldt, resulting in the parents shutting it down. The children become infuriated with their parents and end up killing them with lions in the nursery. Ray Bradbury develops his theme that excessive technology corrupts children in his short story “The Veldt” through the use of setting, characterization, and foreshadowing.
Children under the age of thirteen and using electronic devices is not a good idea due to their innocence and how easily they can be manipulated. The way irritation is connected to the addictive quality is that it slowly develops a mental illness. Common illnesses include depression, anxiety and frequent anger issues. All of these facts tie together to show how children can be overpowered by cell phones at an inappropriate age. One reason to consider the introduction of cell phones in learning is to promote digital etiquette, a concept that is foreign to most people.
