Guy De Maupassant’s The Necklace is a story about a woman whose life is not what she feels she deserves. Mathilde lives in an illusory world where objects, appearances, and associations have life-changing powers. “She was one of those pretty and charming girls born, as though fate had blundered over her, into a family of artisans.” Instead of being able to marry a man of class and wealth, she wed Monsieur Loisel. She felt as if her life was of less value in society, having great agony that she lived in what she considered a meager and low-class lifestyle. Even knowing her husband loved her and tried to appease her she was reluctant to appreciate the life they had, feeling constantly displeased, and stuck in a realm of poverty. This would lead her to visit an old school friend Madame Forestier. She hadn't seen her friend in a long time, because it had made her so afflicted with sadness when she saw the luxurious life her friend lived, the life Madame Loisel had always yearned for. But for the occasion she was attending she needed to ask her wealthy friend to borrow jewelry, Madame Forestier was happy to oblige and lent her a stunning diamond necklace . In the midst of indulging in the lavish party, heavy drinking, and endless dances to return home to realize the necklace she borrowed had vanished without trace. Unknowingly due to her unappeasable attitude and senseless pride of not telling her old friend what occured she and Monsieur Loisel would soon experience a decade of inferior conditions of inadequate quality of a true poverty stricken life, and would endure grueling hard work to pay for a replacement of the seemingly expensive diamond necklace. Only to find out that she had sacrificed her and her devoted husband lives to the devastating news that the necklace possessed by Madame Forestier was in fact none other than inexpensive costume
