One of the oldest arguments in the history of psychology is the Nature vs Nurture debate. Each of these sides have good points that it's really hard to decide whether a person's development is predisposed in his DNA, or a majority of it is influenced by his/hers life experiences and his/her environment. Robert S.Feldman(2014) says that: “Nature refers to traits, abilities, and capacities that are inherited from one’s parents”. On the other hand, nurture refers to the environmental influences that shape certain behaviors. I will give an explanation of the nature/nurture controversy as it pertains to each of the following circumstances. In prenatal development nature refers to the genetic makeup of the baby. …show more content…
It will determine the sex of the baby, eye color, and hair color because of the parents genes. In the nurture way certain things the mother does while being pregnant will effect the baby and how he or she grows. If the mom eats healthy and works out the baby has a higher chance of being healthy and having an easier birth. Now if the mom is stressed out or takes drugs that will effect the baby’s growth and development. Next we will talk about labor and how the nature/nurture controversy applies to it. Labor should be brought on by your body telling you that it’s ready. It is best if we let nature take its course in this area. Of course there are some times where some mom’s are induced using different methods because it is better for their health and the babies. Same with labor birth should be as natural as possible and should only be interfere with if needed. Birth Complications can happen because of the mother or fathers genes but it can also be brought on by the way the mother has taken care of herself during her pregnancy. Development of the competent newborn is an amazing thing to witness. For the most part newborn babies rely solely on their mother /caretaker. But it’s amazing to see the different things they are born with so that they can continue living. One of these things is reflexes. When a baby is born we do not teach them to suck when presented with something to suck on. But instead they were born with this reflex and we just nurture it. Daisy Peasblossom Fernchild says “whether nature or nurture is more important for an influence on an infant's well-being is an excellent question.
In a very strong sense, nature lays the foundation, but it is up to you, the parent, to provide good parenting practices that will insure your baby's optimal development”. For an example height is an example of a trait that is influenced by the interaction of nature and nurture. A child might come from a family where everyone is tall, and he may have inherited these genes for height. However, if he grows up in a deprived environment where he does not receive proper nourishment, he might never attain the height he might have, had he grown up in a healthier environment Nature and nurture are both very important aspects of life. I believe if you have a healthy mix of the two your baby will have a jump start in their development, and you will set a stable foundation for their future. Although the nature-vs-nurture debate may still be going I hope people realize that both are just as important. We must nurture our nature in order to survive this crazy world. I love what Kendra Cherry writes; “The reality is that there is no simple way to disentangle the multitude of forces that exist. These influences include genetic factors that interact with one another, environmental factors that interact such as social experiences and overall culture, as well as how both hereditary and environmental influences
intermingle.” I will end by saying this; your child will be gifted with some good genetic traits but good habits and mindset to succeed in every situation, needs to be embedded within your child through your actions. So, preach what you say and do, along with giving your child time, knowledge, and confidence that your child is special and can do anything
The nature vs. nurture controversy is an age old question in the scientific and psychological world with both camps having evidence to support their theories. The controversy lies in which is more influential in the development of human beings. While there is no definitive answer for this, it is interesting to look at each of them separately.
“The term “nature versus nurture” is used to refer to a long-running scientific debate. The source of debate is the question of which has a greater influence on development: someone's innate characteristics provided by genetics, or someone's environment. In fact, the nature versus nurture debate has been largely termed obsolete by many researchers, because both innate characteristics and environment play a huge role in development, and they often intersect”. (Smith, 2010 p. 1)
The nature vs. nurture debate: the nature side, are those such as biologists, psychologists and others in the natural sciences, argue that behavioral traits can be explained by genetics. Those taking the nurture side are sociologists and others in the social sciences, they argue that human behavior is learned and shaped through social interaction. This argument should be dismissed because you don’t have to look far to see that both genetics and our environment, plays a role in who we are and our behaviors. (Glass). The point is there is a complex relationship between nature and nurture, either one alone is insufficient to explain what makes us human. (Colt). Our heredity gives us a basic potential,...
The argument of nature vs. nurture is a long-standing one in the psychological and social worlds. It is the argument about whether we are ruled by our genes or our upbringing. It is my thought that neither is true. It is nature working with nurture which determines our personality and our lifestyle.
Ok so what's the nature vs nurture? Nature vs nurture is the time old argument Like all living things, people have inherited innate qualities. There are also events or experiences which happen during life. 'Nature' describes the effect of a person's genetics , whereas 'nurture' describes whatever happens during life.
...s may never agree on a conclusive degree to which both nature and nurture play roles in human development, but over the years, more improved studies have shown that both are crucial aspects. With all the knowledge we are gaining from these studies, it would be quite limiting to believe that a criminal and his actions are the sole result of heredity. Even in people who do not commit crimes, genes themselves are affected by the prenatal environment. Undoubtedly, the fetus experiences changes in environment, forcing possible changes in heredity and reactionary response. We are likely to never find the answer to how much or how little either, nature or nurture, impacts our lives, but at least we can agree that they both do, in fact, have major roles. Our development is not the culmination of heredity alone, but of a tangled web of experiences and genetics entwined.
The nature and nurture debate has been studied for many years. Years ago many people thought that human behavior was “instinctive, simply our nature” (Macionis, 2008). Are people born with a predetermined plot of what their life will hold? Many researchers have done numerous studies that have proven that human behavior comes from how a person was nurtured after birth. Biology and nature mean the same thing, and we are biologically programmed at birth to do certain things. For example, at birth a person’s heart beats on its own, and a baby knows how to suck instantly. This shows the nature side of humans. How a child was nurtured at birth has a direct bearing on his or her future.
Nurture is constituted by the influence of millions of complex environmental factors that form a child's character. Advocators of nature do not believe that character is predetermined by genes, but formed over time. Although often separated, nature and nurture work together in human development. The human conscience is neither innate from birth or entirely shaped through experience, instead, genetics and environmental influences combine to form human behavior, character, and personality traits that constantly change and develop throughout life. The debate on nature versus nurture has existed for thousands of years.
One of the hottest debates is and has been nature vs nurture for years, but what is the difference between the two? Nature is what people think of as already having and not being able to change it, in other words, pre-wiring (Sincero). Nurture is the influence of experiences and its environment of external factors (Sincero). Both nature and nurture play important roles in human development. Scientists and researchers are both trying to figure out which is the main cause in development because it is still unknown on which it is. The best position to side with is nature. Nature is also defined as genetic or hormone based behaviors (Agin). Regardless of the involvement in everyday life, or nurture, this argumentation centers around the effect genes have on human personalities. Although it is understandable on reasons to side with nurture, nature is the better stand in this controversy. Reasons to side with nature is because of genes and what genes hold. Genes is what
In 1874, Francis Galton said, “Nature is all that a man brings with him into the world; nurture is every influence that affects him after his birth”. The human body contains millions upon millions of cells and each of these cells contains hereditary information and DNA. However, there is no proof that the information carried in these genes predetermines the way in which we behave. I believe it is our life experiences and what we see and are told that shape the way in which we behave. Therefore, it appears to me that nurturing plays a far more governing and dominant role in a human being’s development rather than nature.
Nature and Nurture are both things that work together they aren’t just separate jobs. They each may do a bit of different things but all in all they both work together and they do things with each other and may also do some things alone.
One of the most well-known debates in psychology is nature versus nurture. Nature is pre-determined traits, influenced by biological factors and genetics. Physical characteristics such as height, hair color, and eye color is all determined by the genetics we inherit. Nurture is the influence of environmental factors. Nature and nurture affects the physical, emotional, and social development of a child.
Nature vs nurture debate is one of the oldest arguments in the history of psychology. It is the scientific cultural, and philosophical debate about whether human culture, behavior, and personality are caused primarily by nature or nurture. Nature and nurture are both equally important. They are the two are major influences that affect the person you grow to be and will determine what your children will be tomorrow. Nature refers to heredity, which are traits and features that are inherited from your parents and ancestors. At birth you, as a person, inherits 50% of each parent 's genetic material that are passed along through the chromosomes found in the DNA. Hair color, height, body type, and eye color are some examples of characteristics
The Nature Nurture Debate occupies a central role in explaining how both environmental, experiential nature factors and how inborn nurture factors affect the growth, change and development of a child. The debate shows how the course of human development is influenced by numerous experiences early on in life. Psychologists agree that early experiences identify developmental milestones and describe the processes of growth and change that occur in the three childhood domains of development which are physical and perceptual development, socio-emotional development, and cognitive development. I will discuss two of these domains in detail throughout my assignment. Also during my essay, I will discuss the theorists who have contributed their ideas
“Nature refers to the genes we receive from our parents that influence our development” and “nurture refers to the wide range of environments, both physical and social, that influence our development.”
